View Full Version : Would a SuperBowl HD DVD add have been worth it?
Andrew J L 02-04-07, 10:53 PM I thought I read there was going to be an HD DVD spot during the SuperBowl.
I didn't see any, I don't think there was one.
Was it just too much money for the HD DVD group to spend?
Did they just think it wasn't worth it.
A lot of people would have seen it, I don't know if it would've helped though.
It was for specific regions only.
John Ballentine 02-04-07, 10:58 PM Saw it here in Los Angeles. It was cool!
Andrew J L 02-04-07, 11:05 PM Really, hmmm? I wonder why it was region specific?
West coast, but not East coast, makes no sense to me.
Was it a cool spot?

theforce8686 02-04-07, 11:15 PM It was only in LA and NYC. Big markets but still very limited exposure.

I saw it in CBS NEW YORK and I was dissapointed since it was the one with the helicopter that has been aired a lot. At least it is a good commercial. They are making a good effort though.
eurotrance 02-04-07, 11:30 PM Speaking of that, was there a BR commercial ? I would think with the kind of money $ony has been spending on BR promotion, it's a no-brainer.
BuGsArEtAsTy 02-04-07, 11:54 PM I dislike that commercial. It doesn't really say much. It doesn't really differentiate HD DVD from DVD IMO.
Rachael Bellomy 02-05-07, 12:00 AM What's the point of advertising Blu or HD-DVD to anybody but selected target audiences. Advertising the two HD formats to civilians, at this time, is a bit like trying to take down the 50 foot woman with a BB gun. ;)
phansson 02-05-07, 12:02 AM Yes, it was the same helicopter ad.
I was watching the New York HD feed via DTV. Did anyone else notice that it was widescreen 480i pillarboxed? This resulted in top/bottom/left/right black boxes, with only a third of the screen filled. If HD DVD is going to "highlight" the format, why would they not have it in widescreen? Most of the other ads were in 16x9.

I see the Blu-ray ads on HD Net regularly. There, they may get some bang for their buck...?
Why do you think that only Sony pays for the Blu ads? What about Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, ect, ect.
BuGsArEtAsTy 02-05-07, 12:23 AM Yes, it was the same helicopter ad.

So... Mediocre ad, and lame presentation.
Somebody in Toshiba's PR department really screwed up.
I can't believe it wasn't HD! Thats just the ultimate in stupidity!!! All of my friends that came over to watch had the same feeling. They dropped the ball.

Same here. It'd be nice if Toshiba (or someone in the HD-DVD camp) would start to air on INHD or HDNet.
After the helicopter HD-DVD ad aired, I asked my wife what she though of it. Sadly, she thought it was simply an ad for a regular DVD player.
In that thread that was posted, didn't they say the Superbowl spot a last minute decision? That would explain why they used an already aired ad.
fire407 02-05-07, 04:14 AM It was HD here in LA. My friend's and I were commenting that we had never seen a local break with an HD spot in it, but KCBS ran the HD DVD commercial in HD while everything else in the break was standard def.

Ditto.
SirDrexl 02-05-07, 04:28 PM I guess this is as good of a thread as any to ask this question: why was the thread about someone wanting an HD DVD of the Super Bowl closed? It was said by the mod it (this forum) was the wrong forum, but what is the right forum? A TV or recording forum would not be appropriate as it was about a possible commercial HD DVD, not a home recording of the game in HD.
Forceflow 02-05-07, 04:55 PM Um, doesn't it seem stupid to do a Superbowl Commericial for only NYC and LA when those markets wouldn't be the largest?
CHICAGO WAS IN THE SUPERBOWL!!! Everyone and their mom's mom was watching the Bears this weekend. FOOLS!

Not for long, they weren't. :p
LAGOSIAN 02-05-07, 05:40 PM The only HD DVD commercial that I saw during the SB was the ad for "Hollywoodland".

I don't recall seeing any HD-DVD adverts on HDNet, but I'm sure I could have missed them. Unfortunately if I have, I don't remember - which isn't a good sign.
I did see on a local news station tonight a mention of some sort of Blu-Ray promotion, where you could enter by submitting a video of yourself to some LA station. Did anyone in the LA area catch that?
