In a recent interview with Clemens Wangerin, Development Director at SCEE Liverpool, he confirms the existence of a next
generation Wipeout in development for PS3.

As quoted from "Develop" Magazine, "Wangerin can’t say much about either game yet, aside from acknowledge their existence, but providing “Sixaxis controls, maybe online multiplayer and downloadable content” to the latter, on a machine he says in fact “has a learning curve a lot easier than the vector units on the PS2” is what excites him. And with one PS3 title already in the can, “the challenge for us now is to stay ahead of the curve”."

That's all for now, aside from the fact that yes, a PS3 Wipeout is in the works. The PSP title, Wipeout Pure was a hit, and the first PSP title to reach the million seller mark. More on this presumably anticipated PS3 title as it develops.

I'm all for futuristic racers, there aren't enough out there imo

If I remember right there was one Wipeout on the PS2 and one on the PSP, don't remember how many PS1. Considering the number of sequels and game clones out there I'd say Wipeout could go to the well a few more times. Besides, it's a fun franchise and they should be able to do enough new things with the PS3 to make it interesting. Tilt control should fit in real well. Right now Fatal Inertia is the only game simular to it and I haven't seen anything on it for a while.

WipeOut XL was and remains the all around best version IMHO. WipeOut Pure on the PSP is very nice however.

The first Wipeout is my all time favorite! Physics where tough but more realistic than any of its sequels. The nice thing about XL was that you did not come to a complete stop each time you touched the side rail. But still, the first one gave me a better rush.
