Has anyone else experienced this?

WHen I leave my ps3 off for a while it almost always freezes on the first few start-ups. That wave thing just barely materializes and the screen freezes completely. The kicker is that it ONLY freezes at start-up and everything else works flawlessly. It's really frustrating. Please help.

I've never experienced anything remotely close to what you are describing.

However, during Blu-ray movie playback, I get freezes (for 10-seconds) at a time. This happened ever since I updated to Firmware 1.5 from Sony.

That sounds like a serious problem you have there.

Have you tried calling Sony customer support?
