View Full Version : Getting sick and tired of playing Resistance
asong26 02-06-07, 12:23 PM Is call of duty really all that bad as they say with physics, and frame-rates?
I love FPS, and currently I am not sure if I should plunge into COD3 with all these problem that everyone game review sites are talking about...
Is it so bad that it actually takes away the experience? I've even heard of enemy bullet killing you, when it simply flies by you, due to errors in physics model....
Ragnarok 02-06-07, 12:25 PM what are you talking about?
asong26 02-06-07, 12:29 PM what are you talking about?
Just about every game review sites speak on bugs in the physics model. Do you have COD3? You haven't noticed this stuff at all? They all say that there's a lot of frame-rate dropping, even when the screen isn't all that busy....
Gamespot for an example talks about this in more detail....
bassmonkeee 02-06-07, 12:32 PM Why title a thread about COD3 with a reference to Resistance?
TwinTurboJosh 02-06-07, 12:33 PM Why title a thread about COD3 with a reference to Resistance?
He's bored with Resistance and is considering picking up COD3. He just wants to know if it's as $hitty as everyone says it is.

Thank you TwinTurboJosh. It thought the title vs. content of this thread was very straight forward, since there isn't any other FPS games available besides Resistance, and COD3...
Ragnarok 02-06-07, 12:38 PM Why title a thread about COD3 with a reference to Resistance?
Yeah, that's where I was getting confused too.
asong26 02-06-07, 12:54 PM I don't really care about the framrate dropping issues as much as the physics... Maybe I should just pick it up, since there really isn't anything else available at the moment....
JackBau3r 02-06-07, 01:05 PM I have CoD3 and the game is boring, and this is coming from someone who loved CoD2. It's quite funny, because I'm playing Resistence (online). Haven't touched CoD3 in weeks.
Why don't you like Resistence? The game is one of the best fps consoles I've played.
CoD3 is probably the worst game (qualitywise) that I have ever played. It is full of bugs. If you play it for a while you will go back to RFoM and think that game is perfect.
ajamils 02-06-07, 02:43 PM I don't know about Ps3 version but lately I've been playing the Xbox360 version (cuz I got bored with playing Resistance) and I haven't encountered any of the above mentioned problems. To tell you the truth I'm liking COD3 (on 360) even more than Resistance.

I've seen many positive reviews of COD3 on Xbox360. But I think this is proving to be one of the downfalls of quick cash scheme. (minimum code modification, and recompile that code using Sony's SDK). I am hearing so much problems with the PS3 version, it's apparent that they did not polish it at all to leverage the the SPUs. I sincerely hope that this isn't the first sign of PS3's dedicated 250MB Ram vs. 512 MB of unified RAM on XBOX360. If if they haven't fully figured out how to use RSX's 250MB RAM that would explain the texture quality and frame issues. But it doesn't explain the sloppy physics issues...
Nevertheless, I am so freakin bored with playing Resistance over and over again, I am willing to give it a try. I'll just play through it once, and trade it in for something else down the road....

Not to make this into a system war thread, but the 360 may have been better suited for you if you're really into FPS. Aside from being a cheapskate, that's the main reason why I went with the 360.
aldamon 02-06-07, 03:51 PM I rented COD3 from Gottaplay and it should arrive this week. Looks like renting it was a good decision if you guys hate it so much.

PCs are more suited for FPS if that's what you are really into. And, Resistance is a pretty good FPS for a console game. Too bad there's no mouse/keyboard support or online coop, otherwise I would have bought this game.

I just bought it from my local Target. First of all, the game suck due to frame rate issues. I am usually a pretty good judge of frame rate when it comes to FPS games. My stomach begins to boil, and I have to bring out the barf bag... Controls aren't very responsive either. I guess I've been spoiled by Resistance...
Also, on the back of the gamebox, it clearly states that it will run on 1080i. But max it will do is 720P. Actually this is a good news, since it also gives me a perfect excuse to return it.
Judging from Resistance, I don't believe that XBOX 360 is necessarily better suited for FPS. Either way, I am returning this game. I know they have a policy on open games, but I was mis-lead to believe that this game would run at 1080i, which it clearly does not.
Well, for the time being, back to Resistance..... Super Human level....

I was comparing console to console not console to PC. By "better suited" I was referring to the number of FPS that are availble for the 360 compared to the PS3. Even with the last generation the Xbox survived off of FPS's when compared to the PS2.

Well, for the time being, back to Resistance..... Super Human level.... Dude, Im confused, are you talking about Resistance?. If you are the only resolution it supports is 720p and thats been known for awhile now. On the back of my copy it only has 720p as a supported resolution. The frame rate is rock solid, and it only goes down when alot of stuff is going on which rarely happens. The controls are good as well, I havent had any problems with them.
Maybe you should have rented Resistance first instead of buying it right away or do a little research next time before purchasing any game.

Did you read the thread?

I understand now... However, I am not sure I agree. There are numerous games that are being readied for release within the next couple of quarters, and many of them are FPS. I think the playing field will begin to level going forward. Are you speaking from release line-up? If so, then maybe you know something I don't. If you are judging from currently available games, then by your definition, XBOX 360 is better suited for everything since there are far more games out for it period, regardless of the genre....
Conspiracy* 02-06-07, 05:20 PM Why dont you play resistance online?
I would guess that ANY game gets boring after beating the 1 player mode. Online you can play forever as long as you dont completely suck.

Never really been a fan of online-fps. No enjoyment for me.... Things just happen to fast, and don't get any feeling of progression... Get tired of dying, and respawning constantly isn't really that fun to me.... Too many bullets coming from all different directions, the most frustrating part has to do with the lack of 'revenge'
If someone kills you, and you respawn, obviously, you want to go after that person, but with 20 other people gunning you down, I don't know, it gets frustrating after a while. I'm just one of those people who enjoys a good action / graphics and a story.

Frame rate doesn't bother me all that much. I remember playing Quake at less than 30 fps, and I was fine and dandy.
I can't attest to what the resolution was when I was playing Resistance this past weekend, as I do not own the game and was playing only an hour of it on someone else's TV that was 480p.
I hate playing FPS with console controllers. I actually had purchased Resistance when I first got my PS3, but didn't open it. I heard that there was no online coop and no mouse and keyboard support, so I returned it.
Now I'm waiting for Rainbow 6: Vegas, and I hope they put in mouse and keyboard support.

Actually for games like Resistance, and Halo 1, 2, controllers aren't that bad once you get used to it... But you're right. I do prefer the keyboard and mouse support if I can have it.
BTW: I just returned the game to Target. Received a full refund. COD3 was a big disappointment for me. I guess I am spoiled by Resistance.... I can't wait for Killzone 2, or F.E.A.R or shall I say it? Halo3....
Conspiracy* 02-06-07, 07:16 PM The controls on vegas are so slow anyway I dont see the purpose of having a mouse. From what I've played of shooters on PC the only purpose of having a mouse is for more acurate quickaim. Like if you're pointed at one person and you want to jerk your mouse over to someone else to shoot the you dont have to wait for your redicule to get to them, its almost instantaneous.
I dont much understand why a console would support a mouse and keyboard. If you want to play a game on PC then play it on PC.
The only reason I could understand why someone wouldnt like online is because they arent good at it. If you got good at the online game its just like being good at the single player. You dont die as much and you can run around playing with things. After beating the superhuman 1 player game its not like the monsters get any smarter, but online you get to deal with all sorts of player AI. Some people are complete newbs that dont understand how the game works yet and others are very skilled players that can go 25 and 5 in a team deathmatch. If you dont like getting shot in the back dont run out in the open blindly...its like 1 player mode I dont know why people think its so different.

As much as I'd hate to admit it, there's a lot of truth what you said. If I was out there kicking A$S, I would probably enjoy it more.. :p
William Mapstone 02-06-07, 08:05 PM I like the "Conversion" games in RFOM online.

Damn, I thought you were talking about Resistance in your previous post (1080i issue), my bad.
jayselle 02-07-07, 10:58 AM I too became bored with Resistance after about 2 weeks. Beat all the levels of single player. Online play is boring as nobody seems to have a mic, the connections can be bad sometimes (like fighting ghosts), and the maps are too big. I love Halo 2 and Gears of War though.
In fact my PS3 hasn't played a game in two months. Just a BD movie player now.

I've been playing FPS and the Rainbow 6 series since the beginning. Just because the game play is slower doesn't mean you don't have to be able to react and move quickly. Quick aiming speed and accuracy is really important in any FPS, even in the R6 series....especially when your preferred weapon is a bolt action sniper rifle.
I don't use my gaming PC much anymore, because my system is already out of date, and I bought all of it's components not too long ago. I was not prepared to spend another $600 upgrading all my components, as I now have mortgage payments, furniture, and a wedding to plan for. Of course, this was all before that said gaming PC's motherboard died on me last month, and I don't like only having one computer working at any given time.
And Sony has said they games will have full mouse and keyboard support. There are a few FPS coming out on the PS3 that will have mouse and keyboard support (Unreal 3). There was also mouse/keyboard support for games like for the PS2. If you want to get more people to want to buy the game, adding in mouse and keyboard support would certainly bring in those that are on the fence about purchasing a FPS for a console.
asong26 02-07-07, 11:37 AM I guess I am another one of those fortunate souls who can afford both PS3 and XBOX 360. As matter of fact, I nearly bought one when the gears of war first came out. But when I saw the power brick of that thing, and saw all of those accessories sold just for the cooling of XBOX360, I decided to wait until M$ released their new 65nm processor version of the XBOX360.
I hope they do release the new version before Halo 3. Then I'd be happy very happy with Halo 3, Killzone 2, Gears of War, and go back to Resistance from time to time....
I felt like it was just the wrong time to buy another console, especially when this new version that will be sporting a HDMI interface is just around the corner....
Mongoos150 02-07-07, 12:52 PM I agree with original posted. New FPS, RPGs need to be coming out, and the "coming soon" list circulating does not look promising. *sigh*
maveric23 02-07-07, 04:57 PM If FPS is your thing, you should probably get a PC. The Playstation isn't known for FPS in general...
asong26 02-07-07, 05:43 PM I have a PC.
Problem is, it's fairly outdated. I would prefer to play these games on the console now that I have a 1080P display. Also, I am getting tired of keeping up with graphcis card and memory requirements. I can play at lower resolution, but I like to play on my big TV.
I think I'll stick it out with the console for now....
Mongoos150 02-07-07, 05:58 PM I would kill for an early release of an updated FFVII, KH3 or FF13.
Well all that may be true, but COD online play is nuts. There are lots of people playing all the time. You cannot figure out the AI because there are 8 enemy gunners after you. The tanks and jeeps are pretty fun too. Throw a sticky grenade at a jeep trying to run you over. crazy
asong26 02-10-07, 08:49 PM After beating the game on easy, medium and hard, finally reached the superman level... I went online, but really wasn't all that much fun... Just run duck, shoot, die...
Anyway, I am on the superhuman now. So far, I haven't noticed anything different except enemies seems to have double the health (takes twice as much hits for them to die, inlcluding the walking zombie that byte you, and the little blood sucking critters.) Anything else I should expect?
hellokitty 02-11-07, 12:51 AM You should try joining a clan. Going in as a group with different weapons can be more fun. You can also pick your own role (defend or offense) in objective based games like Meltdown.
If you really want revenge, do a custom game with them :)
maveric23 02-11-07, 01:52 AM ... I went online, but really wasn't all that much fun... Just run duck, shoot, die...
I agree, the maps aren't that great and the game feels clunky.
Do you have an Xbox? Halo 2 multiplayer is the best FPS on a console, ever. I just played it again after a long hiatus and it's still a blast.
If Halo would come to the PS3 I'd be stoked!
hellokitty 02-11-07, 02:15 AM Well... I have Halo 2 and an Xbox but I think Halo 1 is better. I don't think Resistance is clunky at all (Look at all the people raving about it... like in GAF).
You can either walk away or adapt :). Try using different weapons. People are devising interesting group strategies to survive too.
What is your Resistance ID ?

Can you give me the low down on 2 types of games that I don't understand really well? They are Meltdown, and Conversion....

I feel the exact opposite about Resistance multiplayer. The large maps are great for 40 person deathmatch and the weapons are well balanced. I haven't played a game online this much since CS or CS: Source.

There are not very different from previous MP FPS games. Resistance delivers in weapon strategy, maps and also smooth framerate.
Meltdown/Breach
============
2 teams fighting for ownership of nodes. The more nodes you hold, the faster you respawn and the more cooled your environment is. Beyond a certain temperature (or until time limit), the team with fewer nodes dies.
You can choose to defend nodes or fight for new ones. If you choose the former, you'll have to find a good position to hide, and pick the right weapons based on the scenario (e.g., flamethrower is more effective against Chimera). There is not much running around. But there is no perfect hiding place too.
If you choose the latter, you'll also learn about the common places to look out for ambush, but you get to run and gun more. Weapon choice also comes into play (e.g., Arc Charger is the best weapon to take over a node quickly, but sucks in general against mobile enemies).
When you play in teams, you can cover for each other, which increase survival time significantly.
Conversion
========
Basically 2 lives for each player (You start as human, respawn as Chimera). Once you've used up your lives, you can stay and watch other players. In conversion, people tend to hold a position more... instead of running around. In some maps, long ranged weapons (Snipers, grenades, launchers, or even Carbine zoom-mode and Bulleye's tagging) dominates. In others, shortgun rules.
Capture the Flag
============
Grab the flag and run. If you hate getting shot at, just be a flag carrier defender. People tend to shoot at the flag carrier more. Of course you can choose to defend flags too.
