Not all plasmas have a 60,000-hours to half brightness panels. the 60" PDP from LG have a lifetime of 45,000-hours to half brightness.

But that doesn't mean that after 45K or 60K hours the panels are going to die, it simply means it won't be as bright as it originally was when you first purchase it.

Besides, 60K does not fly by night, that's approximately 27-years @ 4-hours per day. and You don't plan to keep your set for that long, do you?

And there's still not answer to whether you can actually replace these backlights and extend the life of those LCDs.

You can have them replaced. But after 25+ years, would you want to?

60,000 hours is more than enough. (I think).

Even if you keep the thing on for 24 hours a day non-stop all the time, it would last you 5-6 years before reaching that limit.

This applies to all forms of flat-panel display tech.

Do keep in mind though, half-life is a curve. Your panel is not going to be functioning at 100% brand new brightness for those 60,000 hours, and then suddenly drop down to 50%. It will dim over time.
