I apologize if this is not in the correct forum or even appropriate. I do get 90 percent of my info from this site but do read some of the magazines as well. I just received an offer for this magazine, "THE PERFECT VISION" and have never heard of it let alone seen it. Any comments on its value to keeping up with Plasma, HD-TV, and Sound? tia

I think I recieved something from this magazine before too. If the promotion offer is very reasonable, then it might be worth it.

There is a web site for the magazine (ThePerfectVision.com) so maybe their web site can give you a little more information about the publication.

You're in luck--you can either read this month's issue interactively or download it as a PDF at this (http://www.avguide.com/the-perfect-vision) page. (It's usually not available online for free). There's an interesting evaluation of the Playstation 3 as a Blu-ray player in the issue.

I've always liked the magazine personally.

TPV is a home theater mag that's a sister publication to The Absolute Sound, a high end audiophile mag. Recently TPV underwent a change which made it a little more mainstream magazine. It's a nice, glossy, well produced magazine with some good contributors for video reviews. They do some pretty good in-depth articles at times, though not quite as much as before. I'd recommend trying it, or as the earlier poster suggested, checking out the free pdf version online. (I think you have to register, but that's pretty easy & painless.)

Thank you all for this info. For the dozen banana's they want seems to be a good deal.

You will be entertained for your buck!
However...
it's tough to get use to "magazine lag" (about two months behind) after having "instant access" to info from great sites like AVS Forum.

Ed, Just the reason I no longer buy the Auto Mags.....with all of the info out there the "news" is so old! I'll pick one up at the Doc's but that's about it. However, I do enjoy my Sound and Vision, but don't spend as much time with it now as it seems to have moved into just a "wire your whole house" and "IPod" type magazine.

I bemoan the new Perfect Vision magazine. While I understand why it went mainstream - hey, what publisher doesn't want more dollars? - it's too bad it lost it's unique qualities along the way.

It used to be a repository for some very nice in-depth, literate, intelligent insight both for display technology and for movies themselves. I really miss the level of detail of the old reviews, as they had carried over the sensitivities and approach of The Absolute Sound, in terms of trying to really
get at not merely how something measures, but it's subjective impact. I remember Jonathan Valin reviewing the top-of-the-line tweaked CRT projector and he really had a way of bringing home the effect on the viewer a particular feature of a technology might have. It was like I was there with him, watching the display. Now TPV reads like any other publication "great contrast, good colors, passed de-interlacing test..." with very little description that imparts the significance of one display's "look" over another.

And their older DVD reviews were fantastic, very film literate and they constantly heralded movie gems that many of us would be unlikely to have discovered or sought out ourselves. Reading the old PV DVD reviews vs, say, Sound and Vision was the difference between walking into a video store run by film enthusiasts and a video rental store by a big chain (e.g. Blockbuster). In the big chain store there are reams of crap lining the shelves, because they have been put there with no regard to their quality, because there is no one who really cares. It's like the store is packed with videos, but there's nothing to watch. But when I walk into a video store run by an actual film enthusiasts (and luckily my city has several) and it's a completely different experience: there are more quality films there than I can even browse in one visit; I can hardly tell what to rent because I'd love to see most of the films.

Same with the old PV reviews. They chose to review many DVDs of quality films, foreign, auteur etc, that really excited the film-lover's tastebud. I wanted to rent all of them (and still keep old PVs just for their DVD reviews as references).

Too bad....

I get it but won't renew. It's been declining for a while. The technical content is much reduced and they've added more consumer electronics gizmos.

I concur with this sentiment. I don't pay for reviews of cheap electronic gadgets and the magazine to start with isn't very thick. I'm not renewing.
