Hello all, I have an SVS pb12+2 and a Velodyne cht10 hooked up with one in each front corner and hooked up to an SMS-1. The problem I am having is that I configured the SMS-1 for a flat response that rolls off slightly after 20hz but while I watch certain movies it seems when some low bass is produced it becomes garbled slightly, or less clear but still loud and dont know what is causing this  . I have been thinking it could be phase differences between the 2 subs but wouldnt that show up on the SMS-1's freq. response graph  ?

**I should also say that it doesnt sound like a blown speaker or anything like that...it is still loud but just doesnt sound like both subs are on the same page I guess....which would mean a phase issue in my thought process...but I get a flat response so I am just confused here  .

**All speakers are set to small with an 80hz x-over**

**The velodyne cht10 is one 10in woofer with a response down to 28hz and the pb12+2 is, well... im sure you know, two 12in woofers and I have 1 port blocked with a 20hz tune. Any help...suggestions?

Thanks,
Brian

I would start by unplugging the Velodyne. Why do you need it?

I have tried it once and the bass seems to come from the right side of the room where the sub sits. When I use both it seems to even it out since both subs sit outside of the front channel speakers. I could move the svs out of the corner and put it directly behind the right front speaker but dont know if that would help much since it still wont be between the 2 front channels.

Thanks,
Brian

ok guys...I unhooked the velodyne and moved the svs in more towards the center of the room and it helped, no more unwanted sound....I just need to keep fooling around with the placement a bit more since Im only using the one sub. I guess the unwanted bass sound was because the pb12+2 went much lower in freq. than the velodyne and on top of that these 2 subs just didn't mate very well in the lower frequency's...who know's...

Brian

Have you considered installing bass traps in your room? They would definitely help smooth out your in room response.

yea I have...just haven't had the funds since I just picked up a denon 4306. I did make my own panels(3)...but they are made of the fluffy fiberglass because I was unable to find a place to purchase the rigid fiberglass at the time. They are 2' x 4' and I used R19 fluffy, no paper backing, doubled up in the frame and then covered in polyester batting(like whats in blankets) and wrapped in burlap for looks. They were a pain in the a** to make due to the fact I had to compress the 2 layers of fluffy into a 4in thick fame and then hold the fluffy in with chicken fence type wire  . So...what I am doing is using 2 for the first reflection points on each side wall and 1 in the front left corner...I had also bought a big bag of R30 that I was going to make more panels with but after doing the 3... I decided to just throw the bag into the front right corner of my room until I can purchase some Gik traps or make them with rigid fiberglass boards....hopefully very soon!...I don't like that big a** bag of R30 staring me in the face  :p !

**I did find out about making these with the fluffy insulation from a site that showed a bunch of different ways on how to make panels and traps, cant remember name though...and believe it or not, I did read about just being able to throw a bag of fluffy insul. from your local depot into the corner of your room for a quick and dirty bass trap :) ...

Take care,
Brian

I built my panels out of vinyl backed fiberglass 2x4 panels from Menards. They come 1 inch thick, and you just tear the backing off, stick 2 of them together with 3M adhesive spray, wrap them in burlap and you're good to go.

When I make a bass trap, I will make 2 2x4 panels that are 4" thick, and stack them in a corner so that they reach floor to ceiling.

Use the SVS only, sell the Velo and put the money towards bass traps. This (http://sensiblesoundsolutions.com/product_info.php?cPath=21&products_id=29) is what you need, not fluffy insulation. 1-2 boxes would make quite a lot of bass traps.

But running just the SVS eq'd through the SMS-1, how does it sound?

It sounds pretty good right now but I still need to play around with the placement a little.

The only reason I got the fluffy was because it was there at the store and I had read about doing it that way if you couldnt find the rigid stuff like oc703 or 705.

Hey rockem,

How does your system sound with that fireplace you got?...I couldnt tell by the picture but it looks like they are glass doors covering the firplace?...I got a fireplace also...and glass doors...and they used to rattle alot  with low bass. I have been fooling around with the doors to get the rattling to stop and I got them down pretty good now with them rarely making a peep....even with the lowest bass :D .

Take care,
Brian

Brian,

To help figure out where the best place to locate your SVS sub, place the sub in your primary listening position and move around the room with the mic from your SMS-1. You may find a better place for the sub. Once you find the best response, move the sub to that position.

My fireplace doesn't rattle at all, and during critical music listening, i have two extra panels that I place in front of it. I don't keep them there because my daughter thinks their baby beds.

The thing that rattles the worst in my room is the protective screen on my Projection tv. When watching WOTW, that thing sounds like the trunk of one of these teenagers with the woofers in their trunk. I'm looking to get a plasma sometime next year.

Thanks for your reply Jim...

I have done this quite a few times to find the best placement and usually its the front corners....only problem is that the bass sound always seems to be coming from the corner where the sub is or basically it just seems to come from the left of the room....I think this happends because the corner is so much outside of the front channel speakers..as opposed to right next to one of them. I would like to put the sub between the front ch. but that is not possible and this was the only reason for using the velodyne. There is a couple more sub positions I am going to try and see how it goes.

Thanks,
Brian

Hey rockem...I hear ya with the tv rattle...mine also rattled but it was the back of the projection tv that rattled. I fixed this too...my fireplace has a concrete porch type thing in front of it that sticks out a couple feet and I dont use the fireplace so I put my tv on the concrete porch thing in front of it. This works better for everything in my room and it looks good...beleive it or not..
