View Full Version : It's been 2 weeks since Update 1.5 introduced BD freezing...is anyone else upset?
US Firmware Update 1.5 Available now (January 24th) (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=793518&highlight=Update+1+5)
All right guys/gals...its now been 2 weeks since Sony released Update 1.5 which as we all know introduced freezing/lockups when playing Blu-ray movies on your PS3.
2 weeks and not a single comment from Sony even admitting there is a problem.
Is anyone else upset they can't watch movies on their PS3 without constant freezing/lockups?

Did you report your problem to Sony? What did they say?
I watched Last Samurai yesterday and had no problem. Maybe it happens with certain discs only!? I don't know.
Scotty L 02-07-07, 07:20 PM You already posted a thread on this.
Did you try v1.51 ?
darkburst 02-07-07, 07:21 PM I had my first experience of this after the 1.5.1 update. It froze at least 6 times during Black Rain. I read that some people were having success by hard resetting it (turning the PS3 off in the back of the unit). I tried that and the next movie I watched had no freezes.
Not scientific and maybe not the answer but you might give it a try, if you haven't. As I am renting the movies, I don't have Black Rain to try again. But I will be watching another tonight and I should know pretty soon if I still have the problem.
Are there specific titles that this is happening to people? So far I've had no glitches. The only BD movies I've watched with 1.5 are:
The Guardian (1.51)
Sky High
Crank
Stealth
Superman Returns
Monster House
Suhnder 02-07-07, 08:06 PM Also try resetting with holding the power for 5 seconds, or turning off / unplugging the network from the PS3.
Personally I haven't been able to test those methods yet... but yea, I am frustrated. Sony really needs to address its customers more.
GeorgeLV 02-07-07, 09:38 PM A hard reset (turn the PS3 off on the back and back on) and disabling networking seems to have alleviated the issue for me. However, this is definitely some that Sony needs to fix in the next firmware update.
maveric23 02-07-07, 11:17 PM Count me among the upset. In fact, if I could do it over again, I would have waited before buying a PS3. Sony really needs to fix the glitches.
woodface 02-07-07, 11:30 PM Well, the PS3 has been out for months and my controller takes a dump in every game. I've gone from loving this console to hating it because I can't play any games without the controller wigging out. Sony hasn't fixed the controller issue even though it's widespread and pretty well-documented, so I don't have much faith that they will address any BD playback problems at this point. Excuse my cynicism, but if they won't fix a problem with a GAME controller not working correctly in GAMES on a GAMING console, I no longer make the assumption they will fix anything.

I read early on that if you start the PS3 with the controller connected to it by the USB cord then it won't wig out on you after you disconnect the usb cord. Since I started doing that I haven't had any problems.
I also have not had any problems playing any BD movies.
bassmonkeee 02-08-07, 08:52 AM I'm running version 1.5 on my 60GB and haven't had a single problem with the controller, and I didn't have a single problem watching either of the two Blu-Ray discs I've watched (Crank and Ice Age 2). I also watched about 45 minutes of Superman Returns without any problems.
I installed 1.5 at my old apartment, but have since relocated. It'll be hooked back up to the internet via ethernet cable. We'll see what happens then.
I've been completely happy with my purchase since Day 1. More games to choose from would be nice, but I only have time to play 1 or 2 at a time, anyway, so that hasn't even really been an issue. And, this month starts the onslaught of available titles.
10Drunks&aDriver 02-08-07, 09:25 AM yea I haven't really had any issues with my PS3 either. No controller disconnects and BD playback has been good. Granted I've only watched about 5 BD's so far but they've been across 1.32 through 1.51
Latham99 02-08-07, 09:47 AM No problems here (knock on wood)
MaliciousBraham 02-08-07, 10:07 AM I've watched 4 movies since the 1.5 update (including 3 back-to-back after 1.51) and have never had a problem. Lucky me I guess.
The controller only seems to wig out for me when I have another bluetooth device in range of the controllers... if I turn off my phone and laptop bt connections I never have an issue. I have wired ethernet, so I dont know if wireless affects it too.
TwinTurboJosh 02-08-07, 10:09 AM Watched a few movies since the update, and I only had one freeze. Crank froze for about 1.5 seconds. Still not as bad as layer changes were back in the day on early DVD players. If all you guys are getting is brief freezes once or twice per movie, I personally think you're getting worked up over something that will undoubtedly be fixed in the near future.
darkburst 02-08-07, 10:39 AM Watched my second movie since trying the hard reset and I had no freezes.
donricouga 02-08-07, 11:31 AM There must be some common thing some people do/have on their ps3 that causes this freezing. I'm one of those that has never had a freeze or even a hiccup with any movie i've tried(and i've tried at least 20 movies). Im at 1.51 now.
Maybe we should make a thread with peoples setup and settings such as ps3 model, purchase date, audio/video connections and settings, TV brand, max/native resolution, internet connection method, free HD Space or any little nuance other people can think of.
In fact I think I might start a thread for this reason.
WhoMe14 02-08-07, 11:31 AM Ive already posted this a few times...absolutly no problems here. Those that are reporting problems should really get on the phone and call Sony.
Tripjammer 02-08-07, 12:01 PM No problems here also. I have firmware 1.51.
I played Bd movies to test. No freezes.
I played resistance for 4 hours with no freezes.
I have no controller issues.
No overheating issues.
My setup:
Version 1.51 of firmware. NOTE: I did do a hardreset anyway after this update. I turned off the PS3 with the switch on the back of the console.
PS3 60 gb model
I have 2 PS3 controllers
I have 1 BD remote
Logitech® Cordless Desktop® MX™ 5000 Laser (bluetooth 2.0)
I have one PS3 controller plugged in and charging at all times.
I use the BD remote to pretty much do everything but play games.
I use the MX5000 for bluetooth keyboard and mouse. It works flawless. You can even control the whole XMB with the mouse or keyboard!
No issues at all on my PS3, which was bought on day one.
The PS3 is solid!
donricouga 02-08-07, 12:13 PM I've posted a seperate thread to try to find any common issues the people who have the freezing problems
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=802419
No issues for me while watching a total of 5 blu-ray movies.
Durbo20vT 02-08-07, 12:28 PM No issues for me while watching a total of 5 blu-ray movies.
same here. 3 movies this week, 5 last week without a pause.
i am hardwired to the net fwiw.
jherring69 02-08-07, 12:35 PM 60 Gig PS3 Working perfect.
No DVD/BD freezes or lockups. Never had a controller problem. Wired internet.
I turn the main power switch (back) off everytime after using.
GW-SMOkeY 02-08-07, 02:14 PM It seems that after turning it off and now watching DVD's and XMEN the last Stand on Blu Ray has been flawless :) Knock on wood that is!
I did notice that when I am playing CO-OP Resistance my 2nd Controller looses sync, disabling the network connection seems to fix it though, and the problem is gone.
Other than that, I called Westinghouse for my HDMI to DVI Cable, and Logitech for a new Z5500 System, it seems that i had a faulty unit, that had popping issues when other equipment was being turned on/off.
Hopefully the stuff gets fixed, until the major games come out. I am waiting for F1, MotorStorm, Oblivion. :o
yea I haven't really had any issues with my PS3 either. No controller disconnects and BD playback has been good. Granted I've only watched about 5 BD's so far but they've been across 1.32 through 1.51
same here, 7 movies...
I think Bluetooth interference might have something to do with controllers... Since I never experienced that...
maverick0716 02-09-07, 08:44 PM I haven't had any freezing problems either.
Just watched The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen... still no freezing (running 1.51).
Jerz
No problem on my side either.
maveric23 02-10-07, 04:07 AM ...The PS3 is solid!
Speak for yourself...
no freezes for me either. IN fact I haven't had any controller disconnects or other issues for weeks now. Isn't this a little beyond strange. Many are experiencing the problem and many are not.
I'm pretty sure most of those individuals claiming to not have freezing when playing blu-ray movies are in the minority.
I played about 5 or 6 blu-ray movies before getting a lockup. If I had stopped watching blu-ray movies at that time, I too would be posting I had no issues. I doubt many newer PS3 owners even have that large of a Blu-ray library to play movies more than 5 times anyway...
Unfortunately, the freezing seems to be a random thing. Sometimes, I can play 3 blu-ray movies in a row without freezes/stops. Then the next 4 movies have constant freezes every 5 minutes. It can drive you crazy.
By the way, Update 1.6 was mentioned in this (http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Story/200702/N07.0209.1112.55351.htm?Page=1) interview, suggesting there won't be a firmware after Update 1.51 until March. And that's assuming the March update will fix the freezing/lockups. This is getting worse each passing day for Blu-ray movie owners on the PS3.

well said. I dont think they watched enough movies yet because I've watched 11 movies since 1.5 update and only 3 of them had freezing issues.
IeraseU 02-10-07, 10:27 AM Disable networking before you watch a movie.......that seems to be the workaround until a patch fixes the issue.
tingham 02-10-07, 10:52 AM Rieper,
I can understand your frustration with freezing bd playback it is strange that some have it and some do not. I have not had it yet with bd. I have had it do it on sd-dvd's though-but that was because of a dirty disk. Was wondering if you tried a cd/dvd lens cleaner on the ps3? The one's with the tiny brushes on the disk. I don't know if this would work for blue-ray players but is certainly worth a try. Maybe there is a spec of dirt or substance on the lens that is moving around once in a while and causing the problem? Maybe blue-ray player lenses need to be cleaned more often than regular dvd player lenses since the laser is alot smaller? Does the ps3 ever freeze on sd-dvd or gaming disks? I am sure you have posted this in the ps3 blue-ray forum? I hope that this problem is solved for the people that have it and it does not appear for the people that do not. I have watched bd with ver 1.31 to 1.51 firmware-about 6 disks since 1.5
maveric23 02-10-07, 12:40 PM The problem isn't due to dirty discs. The evidence is that the freezing does not occur at the same points during playback. For instance, my PS3 froze during one scene in Goodfellas. I have re-run that exact scene over 6 times afterwards and there was no freezing.
I use the PS3 as a BD player nearly every day. I haven't had any problems...I'm not saying they don't exist, I'm just saying I haven't had any freezes during playback (knocks on wood).
60GB
1.51 firmware
Wi-Fi used
Launch day console
Made in China
PS3 is in a TV stand on glass with a lot of open space on all sides
Never had problems with 1.5 either.
There has to be a reason why some are experiencing this and some aren't. Maybe the QC on the blu-ray diodes isn't quite up to snuff?
No freezes here ever with any revision. (20GB version, wired LAN)
Have watched all these since 1.50/1.51
Chicago
Memento
Beerfest
The Searchers, 1956
Good Night, and Good Luck
Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut,
GoodFellas: Special Edition
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Last Samurai
Crash
cheezycheech 02-10-07, 03:13 PM no issues here also and i use mine daily for browsing on the net, ps2/ps3 games, bd, sddvd, etc. if you think it maybe modem related, you may want to have the wireline and hardware checked for bouncing, slips, or syncing issues.
...just watched 50 first dates and still no issues.

csmith75 02-11-07, 09:48 AM I primarily use my PS3 as a Blu-ray player and I've watched quite a few movies since I updated to 1.5 and 1.5.1. Haven't experienced any freezing...60GB, connected wirelessly.
CyberScott 02-11-07, 10:06 AM I've watched 3 movies with the 1.51 update, Monster House, Open Season, Click! with no freezes. I have the 60 gig model, using the wireless internet connection, with video output via HDMI to a Samsung 6168w @ 1080i
TwinTurboJosh 02-11-07, 01:35 PM Just updated from 1.5 to 1.51 and watched The Descent. No freezes on this firmware revision.
DLove23 02-11-07, 02:28 PM well said. I dont think they watched enough movies yet because I've watched 11 movies since 1.5 update and only 3 of them had freezing issues.
Thats 3 too many IMO.
Thats 3 too many IMO.
Well ... ya it is. After the first movie was skipping , I thought it was a scratched disc. But then it happed to 2 more movies. ''Benchwarmers'' froze 4 times and it was a brand new disc. I hope the fix comes soon. In the mean time I disable the wireless before watching movies. I guess I can live with that for a short time.
SirDrexl 02-11-07, 03:00 PM I haven't had any freezes either (20GB model), but then again, I haven't actually watched a movie straight from beginning to end since 1.50. I've watched a couple of discs where I skip around to different scenes (they're musicals), and a couple of movies where I've paused/stopped it from time to time to get a drink or something.
The question is, why is the network even becoming active during movie playback? Perhaps they're testing the background downloading feature?
Greg_63 02-11-07, 04:07 PM I wonder if the people having freeze ups have units that are over-heating.
BTW, the latest firmware does not correct the problem with the wireless controller. It is much better but I had 2 incidents recently when I forgot to connect the controller to the PS3 with the usb cord before turning it on. No biggy, I'll just connect the controller before turning the unit on and then disconnect it after it starts up.
PSXBatou 02-11-07, 04:09 PM It seems like Blu-Ray Playback freezing with 1.51 is WiFi related. When i was watching Invincible i had no issues connecting to PSN either before or after watching the movie, no freezes at all in the movie. When i was watching Open Season last night it froze 2 times, both times wifi light was going bonkers and i had some PSN issues before and after the movie was over i couldn't connect to PSN. I never had any freezing before applying 1.51, the freezes are never terminal and last 3-5 seconds. Games have never froze on me.
I would call Sony, but since this is FirmWare related i doubt there is much they would do for me.

Greg, just press the PS button once your PS3 powers up. It'll let you resume control with that specific controller.
EyeCrave 02-11-07, 04:55 PM Before upgrading to 1.5 I'd watched about 30 titles with no issue. No even the titles I'd watched successfully I've had freezing. Lethal Weapon was the worst thus far freezing about 6 times throughout the film for about 20 seconds. The thing is it starts to play where it would have been had it not froze.
lilstinky 02-13-07, 01:07 PM I've had no problems with freezing on mine. I watched Tears of the Sun and The Big Hit yesterday. The only thing that kinda bugs me is that any solid colors such as long shots with the sky in the background I get some minor digital noise that looks like compression noise.
edvedder 02-14-07, 08:27 PM I primarily use my PS3 as a Blu-ray player and I've watched quite a few movies since I updated to 1.5 and 1.5.1. Haven't experienced any freezing...60GB, connected wirelessly.
36 blu ray movies and none of them have froze up during playback (knock on wood). The only time i did have an issue was on the crank menu screen, everytime i tried to select an option (play movie, scene selection, special features) i got a message saying this option is not available. This occured before i updated to 1.51. Have only watched 1 movie since updating to 1.51 and there were no freezes during Reign of Fire. I never keep my Ps3 connected to the net while playing movies so maybe that is causing an issue for some of you (even thought it shouldnt and sony should fix it). So far i am loving the ps3 as a blu ray player but I havent been playing games on it (WOW keeping me busy). Hope u guys get your issues resolved, i could see how that would be frustrating if it happened all the time and randomly. Part of the reason i ditched Hd-dvd was because my 360 addon had all sorts of issues with playback on some disks (sound being too low on lucky number slevin and severe freezes during SR). These problems could have been attributed to the software itself but either way the problems bugged me to the point that i lost faith in hd-dvd and no longer purchase movies on that format (plus combo disks are way overpriced).
metalsaber 02-14-07, 08:45 PM I haven't watched any movies lately as my main receiver is out for a firmware update. :(
Malcolm_B 02-14-07, 09:11 PM Watched 3 movies last weekend and no freezes.
Brady84 02-15-07, 09:35 AM I've never had a freeze on mine, with any of the firmwares.
60gig
wired lan
standing vertically with plenty of air space
ThePrisoner 02-15-07, 09:43 AM How do you check to see what firmware you have? I think mine is 1.32, not sure.
How do you check to see what firmware you have? I think mine is 1.32, not sure.
go to system update
I recommend not updating to 1.51 if you still have 1.32 because I had no freezes at all before 1.5. Just wait until you here otherwise.
Zero problems with my PS3 as well.
However, I turn off the switch on the back of my PS3 every day because I don't want my kid turning it on by touching the power pressure switch or the PS key on the controller.
