I want to purchase the service manual for my Toshiba 57HX81 (a 5 year old Toshiba RPTV) online at Service Manuals Parts Catalog Online Shop (www.smpcshop.com (http://www.smpcshop.com)). I need the manual to hopefully figure out how to replace a cracked screen.

Has anybody bought a service manual or anything else from them? Are they on the up and up?

The reason I ask is that their price is significantly lower than anywhere else I've seen ($8 vs. $30 to $50 at a few other places) and when you enter information on their website that you will pay by paypal, the web browser jumps to what looks like a paypal page that asks you to enter your paypal password (the address in the address bar is https://paypal.com/[etc]), but while it looks like a paypal page, it's in the same web browser that the shopping cart page on smpcshop.com was in. It seems like it's probably on the level, but I don't want to get duped into giving away my paypal password. Can anybody make me feel comfortable about entering my paypal password?

[I guess technically this isn't a Flat Panel question, but I've been reading the FP forum for a couple of years in anticipation of buying a FP set, and the question really doesn't have anything to do with the type of set .... it's just as applicable to FP sets. If the question should be moved somewhere, moderator, please do so.]

I did a test checkout of the site just for curiosity, and at least from the appearance it seems okay. The site takes your cart data and sends you to what seems to be the Paypal checkout page. I didn't enter any credit card data, but it looks like a legitimate paypal URL.

The problem is these days the scammers really make the phishing pages look like the actual site. Perhaps the paypal site has a list of all approved shops that you could search to make certain this store is legitimately accepting paypal.

My feeling is that it's okay, but it is good to be cautious.

Sounds like they are selling a CD-ROM version of the service manual, that explains why is cheaper. have you try giving them a call, They might take your order over the phone and you can pay with your credit card.

Actually what they sell is a pdf version that you can download over the Internet once they get your payment.

I felt confident enough in them that here's what I did: I changed the password on my paypal account to a temporary one, conducted the transaction with smpcshop.com using that temporary password, and then when the transaction was complete I changed my password back.

There were no apparent problems with the transaction, and now they have a different password than the real one, so no problem.

It appears that it is a perfectly legitimate business.
