I have had this set for a little over 2 weeks now, a great tv, replaced my black grass 42 sammy.
I turned the TV off and then immediately turned it back on, and heard what sounded to be a buzzing or humming from the back of the set like 2 discrete buzzes, then it disappears and the picture comes back on. Is this some sort of calibration procedure or something?

Never mind, it only happen's when you turn it off, and immediately turn it back on, like its trying to fire up the bulb or something. I let the set sit for a few minutes and its back to quiet again, eh nothings perfect.
I don't know if what you are hearing is normal, but there are two potential sources of noise.
Bulb-powered DLPs produce a fair amount of heat, and a fan is needed to dissipate this heat out the rear of the display.
Every bulb-powered DLP also uses a color wheel, which spins at a high rate. As these sets approach the end of their life (i.e. mechanical failure), you may hear a high-pitched noise from the color wheel.

In the future wait at least a couple of minutes or longer if possible before you turn your set back on. When the lamp is above a certain temperature it can't "strike" (turn on).

The sounds you heard were the lamp igniter trying to ignite the hot bulb. A hot bulb is many times more difficult to light than a cool bulb and it is very hard on both the bulb and the igniter to do this.
