I've looked at DLPs several times in stores and never saw the RBE, and I still rarely see it, but my wife is hard of hearing so we use the closed captioning and when it's on with white lettering I get RBE everywhere.

I changed it to green and the effect went away, I know it's tough to find content and conditions that answer the question in a store, I was sure I wasn't going to see RBE after all the time I spent looking for it, but reading CC sets it off like nothing else does.

Should be easy to get them to turn on the CC for you.

I don't know if this is common knowledge or even if it will work for everyone but if I could help someone out I figure it's worth a post.

Yeah, anywhere that there is a bright image with a darker background(like white text on black or a candle flame) is where you have a chance to see the RBE. I find that in good lighting, RBE is very hard/impossible to see on new sets. I looked at an older toshiba dlp in a fairly dark backroom of a store and WOW, RBE like mad. I couldn't handle it, whoever owns this set(62hm15a) god bless them. I looked at a newer 1080p toshiba in a bit more light, and I couldn't see a RBE at all, not even a hint of one no matter how hard I tried.

I would imagine white text would be the worst. You have the contrast problem and you will be moving your eyes quickly across the screen. What DLP set do you own btw??

I noticed with my new set, I get massive RBE if the lights are really low. But if I have even some relatively low lighting on it goes away for the most part.

It's a Samsung, hls5687w.

Yeah, the bright white on black is part of it, but it's also the rapid eye movements from reading and viewing at the same time that set it off.

It's been hours since I thought to change the color of the text and I haven't seen any RBE since I did.

I am in the same boat. I never noticed it until I got my set. Luckily, even though I notice it it doesn't really bother me.

Your comments are a little harsh, but yes, I've seen RBE on every DLP (sans the LED Sammy) even the high end Mits.

Any white spots on dark + rapid eye movement do it for me every time. This was a dealbreaker to me as the play calling screen in Madden is mostly black on white.

I've gotten headaches and nausea watching DLP sets.
