Greetings! I am stumped.
Motherboard update to ASUS P4P800-E Deluxe w/ onbrd IEEE1394. WindowsXP SP2. Had (and removed) SB audigy MP3+ that had firewire. Had my sony miniDV working w/ the prior config but now cannot get Windows XP to recognize firewire devices more than once. Camcorder, iPOD, ext HD all plug and play normally - once then never again. When connected, seem to work OK until "stopped" (properly). Devices do not show up in device manager but the IEEE 1394 OHCI adapter does. Have tried several cables, disabled and reenabled the IEEE1394 driver, removed the soundblaster and reinstalled windows (as a repair). updated video drivers (Radeon 7500 all in wonder), removed the IEEE driver and let it auto reinstall. Lets see did I miss anything...?
Why in the heck is windows XP not recognizing devices??? can anybody help?? Pleeze??
Thanks in advance!

Did you find a solution to WinXP not recognizing your firewire devices? I recently upgraded from Windows 2000 to Windows XP and sure enough, the first time I connected my camcorder, it registered and stated installing devices. Now it won't detect anything.
Just wondering,

I've seen this problem in Windows XP SP2 as well. Microsoft says in KB 314873 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314873/) that it is a device power management issue (sure... blame the device, couldn't possibly be Windows' fault). My camera doesn't have any explicit power management, but maybe turning it off while connected caused the problem... or it could be one of multiple factors...

Thanks for the replys guys-
I hadn't seen this article and it does raise suspicions but as my camera has no power mgmt controls either can't test. Have tried (repeatedly) removong and reinserting to no avail. Have also tried removing "non connected devices" in device manager which also did not help (although there were like 10 instances of my camcorder). I am suspicious of the device since my laptops do not see the device either. I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars to have the camera serviced as it it virtually obsolete so I guess I am stuck w/ an analog connection.

I have been fighting a similar problem for the past 2 years - Sony DCR-PC1 not recognized when connected to Firewire port.
I went down the route that had worked for some of downgrading drivers to pre-XP SP2 version, with no effect.
In my case, my camera worked when connected to a Firewire port on a laptop in the office, but not on either of my 2 home PCs. I tried 3 different Firewire cards with different chipsets, 3 different cables - no luck.
Recently I tried again, having replaced one of my home PCs. Once again camera not recognized when connect to Firewire port. I bought yet another laptop home from the office - everything works fine.
Finally, I thought about the differences between the laptops and my home PCs - the actual Firewire port. Each of the laptop Firewire ports have been 4-pin, while all of the various cards/cables used at home have been 6-pin - connected to the camera by various 4-pin to 6-pin cables.
So, I hunted down a $5 Fireire PCI card that has both a 6-pin and an 4-pin connected. Lo and behold, my camera works when connected to the 4-pin.
I thought that a 6-pin to 4-pin connection was identical except the the 6-pin carries power. Therefore the signal integrity should have been there for the 4-pin connection.
I hope my experience helps someone else.

Wow, Les, I'm going to have to try that. I'm about ready to throw my camcorder away. Can you tell us the model firewire card you found? Thanks!

Hi
I visited this forum yesterday as I too had a problem connecting a Sony camcorder to XP. It was working fine and then I had to reformat my system and it wouldn't work.
Having searched high and low and installed various drivers to no avail, last night I found the answer.
ubcore software informer dot com (sorry for the non url but I couldn't post it as this is my first post and it wouldn't allow me to)
Go here and download Ubcore. In the Tools section there is a neat prog called ubswitch which appears in your system tray. Right click on this and you can switch to the Microsoft or Unibrain 1394 drivers. I selected Microsoft and immediately my PC recognised my camcorder!
I'm now back to editing!!
Cheers
