Could you guys recommend a decent htib that I could use with my ps3 to get pcm audio. Are the onkyo systems okay?

Thanks

Don't get the Onkyo 674, or the 604. Neither one will output LPCM 7-channel sound.

I own the 674, and as soon as a new receiver with hdmi 1.3 comes out that can decode DTS-MA and support output for 7.1 channels of sound from LPCM tracks, I will replace it.

For now, I'd recommend getting the cheapest Denon you can find. I think all the newer Denons output 7-channels of LPCM.

Looking under a grand...hopefully.

Now this is maybe a dumb question, but do you have to have a 7.1 reciever to get pcm?

Sorry, I'm a audio newbie.

As far as I know, there is no HTIB that processes PCM Audio, only passes it through. Onkyo systems are fine but like Rieper says, that can't do 7.1 PCM, only 5.1 PCM. Try a Marantz receiver(SR-4001). I'm pretty sure that does 7.1 PCM. It'll be quite tough to get stay under $1000 to get a 7.1 system(receiver and speakers) that processes PCM.

Look at the Denon 2807. It's right around your max budget. It seems to be one of the few receivers without any problems playing the PCM tracks over HDMI.

Some people are reporting that the Onkyo 674 DOES do 7.1LPCM and that they have "heard it themeselves" with Resistance:FoM.

Anyone have the setup to debunk or prove this?

Even though HDMI 1.1 supports 8 discrete audio channels, the Onkyo 674 will not handle 7.1 PCM over HDMI (page#31 Manual) So any bluray player(PS3 included) or HD DVD Player will not be able to get true 7.1 audio over HDMI.

ALTHOUGH.... if your player(Not the PS3) has 7.1 seperate analog outputs(8 rca connections) the receiver also cannot decode a 7.1 audio bitstream... so its 8 ANALOG inputs if you want true 7.1

try something like the Pioneer VSX-81TXV. I think its about the same price

I have the Pioneer VSX-74TXVi, and it can accept 7.1 PCM over HDMI from the PS3.

Thanks guys, but to be honest I knew this already, and I have the 674' and read the manual...

...nonetheless, there are those who say that the manual is incorrect, addresses other models, etc. and so I am looking for someone to PROVE the manual CORRECT. I understand the tech of it all ;)

And since messaging has no tone, let me be clear: I truly appreciate the above answers and responses, but I am just looking for someone with a 674' and a 7.1 setup to play Resistance, and report back as to whether it DOES or DOES NOT pass all 7 channels over HDMI.

Thanks everyone! :)

Just wanted to be clear, as I'm thinking of purchasing a decent receiver sometime soon.

So the only thing I would need for full LPCM on the PS3, is any receiver that has HDMI inputs? (for at least 5.1)

I have the VSX-72TXV hooked up to my PS3 HDMI for audio (PCM) and component for video and all works fine.

Look, I own the Onkyo 674 and I have it connected to my PS3 using an HDMI cable. I can only get 5.1 channels of LCPM out of the PS3, even on games which support 7.1 LPCM audio channels (like Resistance) and Blu-ray movies like Crank or Descent (which I both own).

Trust me, you aren't getting 7.1 audio through the Onkyo 674. If you find anyone posting they have, then they are full of crap or you are reading there post and making your own assumptions.

I already recommended getting a newer Denon receiver, or waiting a few months and getting an HDMI 1.3 receiver this summer.

What about the Yamaha VSX 2700 and the HTR-6090? They both do HDMI audio, and some have reported they can handle HiDef audio from the PS3. I think!

Jeez...I was just asking. I made NO assumptions, and your tone is rude and childish...

I simply stated a fact: SOMEONE said they achieved it. The manual says otherwise. I DO NOT have the ability to test it for myself. WILL SOMEONE please do so and report back.

So thank you for both your report (as now I know) and for your condescending tone. :p

...and it's "their" not "there". :p

Thanks for the confirmation. One more question ... (just triple-checking because other than the PCM hi-res audio, the 6090 is not much of an upgrade from my overall awesome rated and THX capable 5790 ;) ) - when you hit Select on the PS3 controller while watching a BluRay movie with the uncompressed audio track enabled, does it SHOW the higher audio bitrate in the top bar (well over 3-4 MBPS, instead of the 384k/640k/1.5M tracks that Optical audio cables carry)? And does the 6090 pass through 1080P flawlessly from your PS3 to your (hopefuly 1080P) TV?

What about 1920x1080 DVI sources like an HTPC?

Thanks!
