View Full Version : Soffit Location?

Hi All:

I am moving houses and going to be building a new home theater. I am going to build Soffits on the side and back walls to house some lighting. However I am having second thought as to the placement. My original idea was to have the soffits on the side walls just go down ¾ of the way down the wall and the back wall fully covered making a large U encompassing the back and sides of the room. That way the screen wall would not be affected and would remain a grand wall.

My concern is that if I don’t have the soffits run the full length of the wall I will create some sound issues creating an extra corner so close to the front speakers and subwoofer locations.

My ceilings are 9 feet so I could also run the soffits all around the room including the screen wall and not interfere with the location of the screen.

I’m interested if anyone has any thoughts acoustically and visually.

Thanks for your input.

Anyone?

I start construction in a week and would really appreciate some opinions.

Thanks,

Gary

I think it would look best with them all around the room..and possibly lighting above the screen that can be controlled separate from rest of the lighting.

Acoustically, (you don't mention dimension of the room), the fewer right angles you can have the better.

Thanks Travis:

That is sort of the conclusion that I am coming to.

The room will be 13X20X9 two walls will be double stud and two walls will be staggered stud, ceiling and floor will be double layer and GG, and all walls will be heavily insulated. I am a little sad since my current room is 24X32X8.5 and seats 18 on four different levels. My current room is pretty well tuned and I think I can do the same for the new smaller space I just was wrestling with the whole soffit idea.

Thanks again for your input.
