hey guys

the cricket world cup '07 is almost here, and if you are familiar with the sport's popularity, you know that this is one mega event!!!

anyway, www.willow.tv is the official online telecaster of the world cup, and i was wondering if i will be able to stream the matches to my tv via the d-link dsm-520.

now i have no idea, what technology they use, and even if i did i wouldnt know what to do with that info...but if someone here has to time to look up this website, and share your thoughts, i would really really appreciate it!!!

pls ask me any questions, and i will do my best to answer!

btw - its a paid site and requires a password for access to the streaming content...

Even though the DSM-520 is supposed to support DRM'd content, you would need to get creative to stream live feeds.

The way I do it right now is I have a Dell laptop with s-video out that is hooked directly to the switcher (or TV) in my HT. This gives a fairly acceptable (probably the equivalent of second generation VHS) full screen image of anything streamed in low resolution and playable in WMP.

I have played around with starting my favourite stream recording software (Windows Media Recorder) to record a stream first (only for a few moments) and then have successfully started playback of the file being generated in Windows Media Player, therefore streaming almost live feeds.

So in theory starting playback in a NMP should be possible. But where you may fall down is that a great many NMPs actually load the whole file first. This will be nigh on impossible for a file that is being generated on an ongoing basis.

I've never been able to disprove this before because I've only had access to two NMPs and neither supported DRM'd material. However, since the same question has been asked on here a couple of times with very little in the way of follow on discussion, I'm willing to bet that it's either not possible or no-one has played enough with the idea yet.

As for me, after being burned twice now on these types of players I'm just going to stick with my trusty laptop until I feel these units are ready for prime time!

hey michaelwalsh - thanks so much for your response.

so looks like my only option is an s-video cable...which i have tried and not liked much...ah well! it was worth a shot...

Don't lose heart so soon. I have been watching streaming cricket matches on my tv through the dsm-520 for quite some time. First of all, you need to use the tversity media server in case you are not already using it. Probably there are other media servers that might serve this purpose, but I don't think you need to look any further than tversity. You'll also need to find the "actual" link for the streaming video (which I'm not sure if willow.tv provides, if it doesn't you can use some app like urlsnooper to find it).
Once you have that, just add it as the video url in the tversity media server and you'll be enjoying the cricket match on your tv in no time.

VLC can be configured to dump a stream to a file and I'd put VLCs streaming credentials above all other players for the PC.

You can then share the directory for the DSM & start watching some time later.

Cool. That sounds very much like what I'm doing with my laptop already. There may well be a DSM-520 in my future then! :)

Just wondering -- did this solution work for you? I might by the 520 to stream live tennis, but I'd need it to do so from a webpage.....

I am interested to0 (not cricket but major league baseball). Is there a better device than the dsm-520 to handle a real-time stream? I haven't purchased anything and the season is only a few weeks away.

THanks

Please let me know the steps you followed to watch steaming video url. I can watch it on my pc when I click on the added video Url on my tversity. But dsm520 only gives me blank screen. Transcoding is enabled though.. please help
