Great interview. Thanks for the link.

I received the DVD-A from Burning Tree last week as well, and man, what a treat!
I had the CD and listened to it a good bit on my system (http://www.mindspring.com/~jonfoulkes/Home_Theater/HomeTheater.htm) as a ripped 16/44.1 wav being upsampled to 16/88.2 via my HTPC and M-Audio Audiophile card, using Meridian’s excellent TriField soundfield to get a 7.1 soundstage, and thought that sounded good. But then this DVD-A shows up, and wow, the depth and clarity is amazing and the surround mix is superb!
This ‘heavier’ metal sound on this album, with lot’s of guitar distortion effects and very layered mix, really shows off what a good recording can do on a great system. One can hear every nuance in the mix even in the densest and loudest passages. Very cool.
I still prefer the ‘Stupid Dream’ class music from PT and am really looking forward to Dying Sun on DVD-A.

Yeah even the heavy passages are very clear; the mix is very immersive and sound quality is awesome

Im still waiting on my package from Burning Tree for the DVD-A of FOABP. Im glad to hear that it doesnt disappoint. I've found Porcupine Tree has some of the consistently highest quality recordings of any band out there, their entire back catalog of standard cd-audio releases are top notch. If only all bands paid that kind of attention to the quality of their releases. Unfortunately it seems for every excellent PT cd, there are 10 highly disappointing over compressed releases to foul your mood. Im thinking Oasis and The Cult at this moment.
I have the original pressing of Lightbulb Sun, and really enjoy it. I cant wait for the DVD-A.
It's been 2 weeks since they said it shipped to me. Is that to long or does it take that long from overseas?
SiriuslyCold 10-26-07, 05:09 PM yours must've been caught in the postal strike :(

Im in the same boat. Burning Shed said my FOABP DVD-A was shipped on October 10th, but nothing yet. Im started to get depressed, I'm dying to hear the MC mix. I forgot about the strike. Oh well, it will get here some day. I just hope it arrives in mint condition, their shipment packaging leaves alot to be desired.
kevin j 11-01-07, 03:24 PM I should be getting mine in 2 weeks along w/the Blackfield dvd.[PAL version btw]
neil wilkes 11-01-07, 03:30 PM I should be getting mine in 2 weeks along w/the Blackfield dvd.[PAL version btw]
What PAL Version?!?
AFAIK, there isn't a PAL version.
The film was shot & edited in NTSC HDV.
The disc was authored in NTSC.
There is no PAL version!
kevin j 11-01-07, 08:37 PM The owner of the store i'm getting it from must've been given bad information.[he's getting it from the UK so he thought UK=PAL]
privit1 11-02-07, 09:54 AM I think you will be happy to be corrected: You mean a 5th Porcupine Tree Album. :)
DVD-A list:
<snip>
Arriving Somewhere (http://www.amazon.com/Arriving-Somewhere-Porcupine-Tree/dp/B000I2IT44******pd_bbs_sr_3/104-7783026-8820724?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1192548551&sr=8-3) is supposed to be pretty good as well.
Arriving somewhere is a great video with a high quailty 5.1 DTS mix a must for any fan of porcupine tree.
stormchaser 11-02-07, 11:32 PM Ditto on the plug for the Arriving Somewhere DVD. This is perhaps the best sounding concert DVD I own.
scooterdog 11-03-07, 11:20 AM Got my Blackfield disc yesterday so it took 11 days from the time it shipped.
scooterdog 11-07-07, 09:25 PM From the PT website
Porcupine Tree were awarded the prestigious best album of the year award (as voted by the readers) for Fear of a Blank Planet at the Classic Rock awards ceremony, held at the Landmark Hotel in London. Also amongst the 300 attendees of the ceremony were Jimmy Page (receiving a lifetime achievement award), Tony Iommi, Jeff Beck, Ronnie James Dio, Alice Cooper, Nick Mason, Ian Paice, Lemmy, Bruce Dickinson, Steven Tyler, and some bloke from Guns n' Roses that Richard and Steven (who accepted the award) has never heard of, though apparently he's quite famous if you like that kind of thing... Many thanks to all those who voted for PT on the Classic Rock website!

Ron Temple 02-09-08, 04:54 PM What's the status on the DVD A "Lightbulb Sun". It was supposed to be released last month, IIRC. Neil????:D
Process53 02-10-08, 01:58 AM According to SW Headquarters News it's due in April.

scroll down to the Jan 16 news.
I see it listed as an April 2008 release.

I'm just finishing it off right now - literally, as I am writing this whilst burning a Video_TS to an RW disc - as we do all the QC in-house which involves making certain that every stream plays properly with no errors/dropouts or glitches.
This will then be merged into Sonic's DVD-A Creator (The Audio_TS is done already) so that the links to the VTS content can be set.
Then there will be a DL test burn for final in-house checks, when I am happy with that it goes for final artist approval.
The masters will be on the way to replication by Wednesday, I reckon.

I'm jonesing for a multi-channel PT release and there couldn't be a better one than this. After much deliberation, I believe that this is the best PT disc of all time....so far. It's very hard to select the best of so many great releases, but when it comes down to it, I believe LS has the most soul.
As far as songs go though, my all time favorite is off Stupid Dream, called 'Stop Swimming'. The multi-channel version blows my mind.
Thanks to you for all your work on making these special discs even more special!
hotguy8289 02-11-08, 09:59 PM Hey Neil, weren't our boys nominated for a Grammy Award this year? What became of that?

It was nominated for Best Surround recording. However, The Beatles Love DVD A won the category. Tough one to go up against because it is a very good recording, I own it and love it. ha ha no pun intended.

I'm looking forward to LS as I've never heard this album. It seems it's OOP here in the US. I rather have the surround version anyway. BTW this will be a DVD-A not a DVD-V with DTS right?

Right, AFAIK, it will be a DVD-A with MLP 5.1 mix on the DVD-A layer, and a DTS 5.1 mix on the DVD-V layer, with a PCM stereo mix (of at least the standard album, maybe not the bonus tracks) too. Same model as the other DVD-As.

infinitesymphony 02-12-08, 02:16 PM Not sure if this has been asked before, but is the PCM Stereo 2.0 track on the Fear of a Blank Planet DVD-A in MLP format or PCM? PT's other DVD-A releases have been the only ones I've seen that featured a regular unencrypted high-res PCM stereo stream.
What difference does it make? The player plays them both the same.
Or are you asking if there's a stereo track accessible by a DVD-Video player? Ah, gotcha. :)
Okay, the DVD-Video zone has the main album in PCM 2.0 48/24 and DTS 5.1 [1.5Mbit]. And it has the extra tracks in Dolby Digital 5.1 [448kbit] and DTS 5.1 [1.5Mbit]. The videos are PCM 2.0 48/24 and DTS 5.1 [1.5Mbit].
The DVD-Audio zone adds the main album in MLP 2.0 48/24 and MLP 5.1 48/24. The extra tracks are MLP 5.1 48/24.
SiriuslyCold 02-12-08, 07:32 PM Yes and I think the interest is this - the PCM 48/24 audio track is accessible via SPDI/F to an outboard DAC if one chooses.
infinitesymphony 02-12-08, 10:46 PM Thanks for the info! In that case, FoaBP is just like the other PT DVD-A releases (excepting In Absentia, which had a 16-bit/48 kHz 2.0 track).
In addition to easy digital output, it's also easier to rip the tracks to WAV and then FLAC for archiving. It certainly saves wear and tear on the DVD. :)
neil wilkes 02-13-08, 10:15 AM The reason for doubling up on the Stereo mix is very simple.
In DVD-A, it is technically incorrect to not allow stereo playback.
So, rather than using a downmix for the main album, which would be not only a compromise but insulting to the stereoheads, we add the stereo stream in Group 1 along with the 5.1 mix in the same group.
This way, if you load the disc & hit "PLAY", the MLP stream will fire right up - no menus or navigation required - using the stream the player is set up for. So, if you have a stereo setup it will load the stereo stream. A surround setup will load the surround stream.
Good News is that LBS is now at the approval stage.
