View Full Version : Metal Gear Solid to be made into a movie by Sony
joeblow 02-08-07, 06:00 PM Wow, this has the potential to be the best gaming-derived movie ever made (not that there's much quality in the competition ;) ). Snippet:
For eight months, the identity of the aforementioned "party" was unknown. That changed this week, when Sony Pictures Entertainment vice chairman Yair Landau revealed his studio is developing the project.
"We're working with the Metal Gear guys," Landau told GameSpot following his D.I.C.E. Summit keynote in Las Vegas. "It's a very cinematic game, it really lends itself to movie-telling. But the question is, 'How do you translate Snake's experience into a full arc that conforms to what audiences expect on the large screen?'"
Landau also hinted the Metal Gear Solid movie may just be the beginning. "There are other games we are looking to develop," the executive said. "We're working with one of my favorite producers right now on an idea for an EverQuest movie." The producer was apparently of such stature that Landau declined to name him. "I'll let him disclose that," he said cryptically.
Besides the forthcoming World of Warcraft film, currently in development at Warner Bros., the Metal Gear Solid movie is the highest-profile game-film project in Hollywood. Previously, that that stature was held by the Peter-Jackson-produced Halo adaptation, which imploded last year.

So who should play Snake since, sadly, Kurt Russell is too old for the part? His Snake Plisken was the inspiration for the lead character in the first Metal Gear game eons ago.
William Mapstone 02-08-07, 06:03 PM I hope its a lot better than the Doom movie.
joeblow 02-08-07, 06:05 PM Good or bad, it'll be a Blu-ray exclusive!
William Mapstone 02-08-07, 06:20 PM Yes it will.:)
chet90si 02-08-07, 06:29 PM Nice. Should be exciting.
WhoMe14 02-08-07, 06:37 PM Thats nice...umm...but how about that game first. heh.
pengilly 02-08-07, 07:21 PM HUMMMM?
Who should play Snake? Somebody start a pole.
IeraseU 02-08-07, 07:38 PM Hugh Jackman, would make a good Snake.
joeblow 02-08-07, 08:09 PM I vote for the writer of the X-Men movies, David Hayter (obvious choice). If not him, maybe Russell Crowe?
BTW, how would you guys like to see a glimpse of the import movie?

BlackRiderX 02-08-07, 08:23 PM Hugh Jackman, would make a good Snake.
Was MGS "Snake" derived or modeled after Carpenter's "Escape" movies? You'll have to excuse me as I have not played any of the MGS games before.
metalsaber 02-08-07, 08:44 PM That would be interesting of who would play Snake.
gamelover360 02-08-07, 08:44 PM Sam whatshisname.......Swayze's sidekick in raodhouse!
Get that dude in some long hair and bam....Snake lives.

Yep. BTW, if you now have a PS3, you may as well start playing the series to see what you missed. (MGS, MGS 2, MGS3: Substinence).
Slacker George 02-08-07, 08:56 PM I don't think anything good will come of this. As the article said, the games are already a great cinematic experience. Trying to turn the game's mix of realistic, terrorist-type scenarios and over-the-top campy villains and storyline into a movie will probably go horribly wrong.

asong26 02-08-07, 09:37 PM Thats nice...umm...but how about that game first. heh.
I agree. This game's been hyped for the last 3 years. And from what I can gather, MGS4 isn't even on Konami's release list for this year. Give us the game!

Jack Black, seriously though these movies are alwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaays terrible.. They really shouldn't waste anymore money just yet..
pengilly 02-08-07, 10:05 PM Thats so true!
Ishmael198 02-08-07, 10:30 PM I can't believe this thread has a thumbs up indicator.
I'm no doubt hopeful, but I can't imagine this movie will be anything other than garbage.
How are they going to translate MGS' near incomprehensible storyline into a successful mass market movie?
Low Roller 02-09-07, 01:34 AM This movie begs for direction from Uwe Boll. :)
Wow, this has the potential to be the best gaming-derived movie ever made
Or the worst and the death of a franchise if it sucks.
I wonder if Ryuhei Kitamura will still be directing as was rumored a few years back. I believe Kojima stated that Kitamura would be his first choice after the work he did for the cut scenes on MGS The Twin Snakes. Kitamura would be the perfect choice.

That would be interesting. But if he does direct...I have this feeling it would end up like VG cinematics. Hmm...an example would be..FFVII:AC. Not a GREAT movie but not a bad one either. But if it's him to direct...I REALLY hope he can pull it off.

I don't think we're referring to the same guy.
Ryuhei Kitamura (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0457565/) is a Japanese director of live action films who speaks fluent English (having studied in Australia). He's best known for his Zombie/Samurai action film "Versus" and the recently released to America "Azumi". He also did the supposedly final Godzilla film "Godzilla Final Wars". His only experience with game cinematics as far as I'm aware was MGS Twin Snakes.
ARPRINCE 02-09-07, 08:59 AM Tom Cruise would be nice!!! If not, I vote for CHUCK NORRIS!!!! :D
Scotty L 02-09-07, 09:07 AM Frankie Munez as that pu55y raiden
Or the worst and the death of a franchise if it sucks.
The Resident Evil movie didn't kill that franchise. Some game franchises are bigger than their 'related' movies. MGS is one of those franchises.
GW-SMOkeY 02-09-07, 09:26 AM I love all the negativity, and the negative assumptions these people usually bring to this forum
Back to the topic, I did hear this a while back ( cousins, in the movie industry ) and I cant be more excited that it is confirmed ;)
metrognomerical 02-09-07, 06:09 PM Kurt Russel absolutely should play snake. hes still ripped and has a very ageless look much like snake. The character is definately modeled on Snake from the escape movies, down to the tattoo if im not mistaken. I think this would most likely throw a huge wrench in the production unless they can get permission from carpenter and or the film company who owns the rights to the character. How about having Carpenter direct the damn thing, honestly that would be ****ing bad ass!
This movie begs for direction from Uwe Boll. :)
so he can beat up some critics later on?

Funny you said that. I've been on the Ebay hunt for the Silent Hill and Resident Evil games already. Never had any of the Playstations before, though I had the PC version of Resident Evil a long time ago. I've got a long list of franchises I need to play.
metalsaber 02-10-07, 08:11 AM ^^
I have the original Silent Hill. I'll sell for $1 billion.

Ahh, I know him. I remember watching Versus and Azumi a couple of years ago. I guess you can say I forgot his name. Sorry bout that. I still need to watch Sky High, I heard that wasn't bad either.
