View Full Version : Unreal Tournament III
asong26 02-08-07, 10:07 PM Now that will be the game to get. Too bad, it'll be at least another 6 yo 7 months. And after that, it'll probably be delayed....
I haven't kept up with all the press releases, except that they're releasing this on PC, PS3 and XBOX360. The question on my mind are these 2 things:
1. Did they take the time to port the engine itself to PS3 to leverage the RSX and SPUs?
2. Anyone hear what resolution this game would support? Please be 1080P!
Looks like it won't be until next Christmas season before we get enough games for the system.... I just wish they had some more quality release titles...
Azzkker 02-08-07, 10:13 PM don't know the resolution it will run at, but the unreal engine 3 is optimized for the ps3 and its gpu. they have also said they plan to have user created maps downloadable for the ps3 over the psn, but hey have not guaranteed that will happen.
either way, this is definitely one to pick up.
1.) They spent time optimizing the engine for all the platforms it supports.
2.) Do not count on it. The Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 just don't have enough power to run this game at 1080P, at least, not decently. Maybe in a few years when Epic is able to extract more power out of it. Even then, a 720P game would still look better.

I know it's late, but when I came across the screen shots, the first thing came to my mind was that the shots look better than anything else I've ever seen. Given they're probably PC versions, but I am expecting it to get even better on the PS3. If it looks like that, and controls / plays like Resistance, it'll be a real treat. I saw some shots in there where it appeared as if you can fly on an aircraft for some air combat?
This thing's going to be awesome. But then again, it's 6 to 7 months down the road.... I just hope it's 1080P.
WhoMe14 02-09-07, 03:18 AM UT3 should be pretty good. Ive been following this one for years now and all things point to this one being optimized for the PS3 even though its also going to come out on the 360 aswell. From what I can gather the decision to bring it to the 360 was an after thought anyway, purely a response to how well Epic's Gears of War did on that console.
Somone asked about flying vehicles...yep. Pick up UT 2004 for the PC and the game play is similar. The Onslaught playing mode features lots of vehicluar combat. Mind you UT3 is supposed to be a huge techinical leap from UT 2004 but if your unfamiliar with the series that should give you an idea as to what to expect from the gameplay.
1080P?...problebly not, but as many can attest to on this forum 1080p isnt the be all end all. Many other things contribute more to the look of the game than its resolution. And with this one yull definatly want to preserve the speed of the title as it is a twitch shooter.
P.S. Lets not forget this oone is said to have keyboard and mouse support!

Why do think PS3 and X360 don't have enough power to run the game in 1080p ? Isn't RSX equivalent to 7900GT GPU ? This GPU should be able to run the game in 1080p. In my PC, I have a 7800 GTX (which is slightly less powerful than 7900 GT) and I can run most new games at 1900x1200 with high quality (but maybe without all the effects like full screen antialiasing and HDR) at 50 fps or more. So if they have an efficient implementation of the engine, it should be able to support 1080p for any game. I was surprised that RFOM developers decided against 1080p due to performance issues, but I think their engine is no where as good as the unreal3 engine. Epic is known for their great 3D engines in the unreal series, and they have a lot of experience in that area. Their games also run on Linux which doesn't use DirectX like Windows. UT2004 runs on Linux almost as fast as on WinXP. So, the Unreal3 engine should be VASTLY better than RFOM engine. And by that I mean not just visually better, but more efficient. Kind of like how the Source engine (in HalfLife2) is a lot faster than the proprietary engine used in FEAR.
So, the PS3 with its Cell+RSX should have more than enough horsepower to run UT3 at 1080p.

Air combat... you bet. Nevermind that! I can't wait to use the Tripod and fry people, War of the Worlds style!

The Unreal 3 engine is FAR beyond current PC games.
When Unreal Tournament 3 comes out for the PC, XBox, and PS3, then you can make comparisons. I seriously doubt that you will be able to run Unreal Tournament 3 on your PC at 1920x1200.

LOL you are one funny dude
CELL and the X360 cpu are far better than PC based CPU, the reason why PC cant run this game @ 1080p good is because your stinking oS takes half of the ram you have. DUH!
1080p is possible on PS3 ( it is a closed off system, therefore it can be programed on to RUN GAME DATA! ) as long as its optimized right... This is how this dumb ass rumors start.

My OS is presently using 13% of my RAM. I have Outlook and IE open so I guess its actually under 13%.. unless the Magic of Microsoft has gotten Outlook to stop using RAM...

1080p support for this game has been neither confirmed nor denied. No rumors here just speculation.

IE? And Outlook? pfft... Firefox and Thunderbird over that ANY DAY! :D

XP takes 400MB of ram itself...

UT3 will showcase their engine for PS3. I would expect it to work superbly on PS3, and thats what they told us to expect.

Ummm, no. If we are speaking in terms of raw power, the PC has already surpassed both consoles. The reason PC games don't seem to look as impressive is because they have to cater to a wide range of specs. Also, the game has to support a wide range of CPU and GPUs, which leaves less time for optimization. The processors in the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are impressive but they are nothing amazing as far as gaming is concerned. To lower costs, they removed out of order execution which lowers the performance by over 45%.
There are single GPU PCs which can run games at 1920 X 1200 with FSAA 8X + 16X aniso without any slowdowns. Granted, these computers cost 2-2.5X as much as the PS3 but they can already achieve performance which neither console will ever attain.
XP takes 400MB of ram itself...
I suggest you go through and remove some junk from your system...After a few configurations, XP uses around 100 MBs.

My sons PC is using 263MB right now (running XP and WoW). You may want to look into what you have running in the background... (This PC is Vista so cannot point out how wrong you are from my PC)
My current PC is better than a PS3, or Xbox 360, and all i have is a nvidia 7950 vid card.
I think once ATI/AMD releases their next-gen video card, the PC will be able to do graphics 4-5 times as detailed as the PS3.
Unreal will always look better on a PC, the amount of memory on the PC just kicks the PS3/Xbox's to the curb.
blklacker 02-10-07, 07:32 PM Yeah a pc will always have an edge,
I will take a PC over any console when it comes to a FPS anyday, but the majority of the market doesnt know how or want to build their own gaming pc, nor they dont have money to spend $2,000+ dollars on a gaming PC (not including a monitor and gaming accesories), that is equal or slightly better than ps3. After FD and sony are done with the ICE ENGINE i think we will all be singing a different toon,
different strokes

Problem is the technology chase.... It's a rat race. At least with the consoles, you won't have to worry about upgrading....
Aaahhh, the heart that I felt when I found out I couldn't even run HL2 at 640x480.
