View Full Version : Possible DNS issue?
lovingdvd 02-09-07, 10:24 AM Hi David - last night I started getting "cannot find www.avsforums.com" errors in my browser. Turns out it could not resolve the host name. The odd thing is that I was going to other sites no problem. I purposely tried the names of some sites I've never been to and the DNS responded just fine. Odd. I use Comcast.
Then from another location today which also uses Comcast on a different part of their network, I am getting the same thing.
I went into another remote network and was able to access the site just fine, as many others are obviously doing. So the problem perhaps is with a DNS issue within Comcast. Either that or a recent change has proprogated to them and not the rest of the net (so heads up if that's the case).
At any rate what suggestions do you have for me to resolve this? In the meantime I've worked around it by hard coding www.avsforums.com in my hosts file as 216.66.21.33.
Thanks!
Same problem here today on Comcast in SE Michigan. Looks like a Comcast DNS issue. I haven't noticed any other sites being affected.
David Bott 02-09-07, 10:51 AM It does seems like Comcast has DNS issues or moved DNS servers to a new IP.
It was also reported here and it seems that refreshing th DNS on your home router will fix it...

It seems the DNS that works is 4.2.2.1 .
markrubin 02-09-07, 10:56 AM I have seen this as well with Comcast: it happens both with IE and Firefox:
Thanks for the info
Same here. Using Comcrap in South Florida. I switched my DNS server to a server that I own, and viola...it works.
This DNS problem is back with Comcast in SE Michigan....not sure about other areas. The AVS Forum DNS records just don't seem to exist on Comcast's DNS servers.
I have notified Comcast about the issue. We'll see if they can fix it.
For now, I'm using a static entry in my HOSTS file:
216.66.21.33 www.avsforum.com
David Bott 03-01-07, 08:24 AM Sorry to read that. The good news is you know what the host file is. ;)
Others in the past have changed their routers DNS settings to use other DNS servers. Try OPENDNS.COM for it seems very, very fast.
fiveprime 03-01-07, 10:21 AM I'll second the OpenDNS recommendation. I'm on Comcast in Eastern Tennessee. I used to have problems with the Comcast DNS servers, then I changed to OpenDNS and now I rarely have any DNS issues.
markrubin 03-01-07, 10:47 AM could someone give some info how you change the DNS?

I'm also now testing OpenDNS and it is working well so far.
Mark....what kind of hardware are you using to assign IP addresses on your home network? Linksys router, perhaps? If so, you would need to log in to the router and change your DNS#1 and DNS#2 to these addresses:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
You can usually find the setting on the STATUS or DHCP page in the Linksys setup. Reboot your computer (or release and renew your IP) and it should pick up the new DNS servers.
markrubin 03-01-07, 11:43 AM Thanks Rupert: yes it is a Linksys router-I will give that a try
Funny this issue has come up in the last few weeks: I have had lots of Comcast outages and this issue with AVS:
recently I got Verizon DSL service to see how it did (the $14.95/month version) : no problems logging on to AVS: I am waiting for FIOS service to be available on my street then I will say goodbye to Comcast
Comcast is currently doing major network upgrades all over the country. I suspect we are seeing those growing pains right now.
I received a letter from Comcast last week stating that there would be full service outages coming up soon, but they promised faster speeds when the upgrade is complete.
We'll see....

I, too, am in SE Michigan and have been loosing AVS on a regular basis lately. Just made the change to OpenDNS and will see what happens.
This is the first time I messed with my DNS settings. I understand why Comcast need to provide DNS services for me but what's in it for OpenDNS?

OpenDNS sells ads on the pages you see when you enter a misspelled web address. Seems like a very small market to me.

Thanks for the info. I hadn't thougth of that.

Neither had I, I read their FAQ yesterday.
markrubin 03-02-07, 01:54 PM I changed my NetGear router to the DNS suggested above and it works fine
I have the High speed service from Comcast: a test on Bandwidth Speed Tester shows 9.3 MBPS [when Comcast is working properly it is very nice]
