Hi,

Does anyone have any good calibration codes they can recommend for about a three-year old Samsung DLP? Specifically, my model number is HLN5065W. As part of the calibration, do you all recommend Warm 1? Warm 2?

Thanks much!

Are you looking for codes to get into the TV Service menu? If so, here they are, but be very careful

Make sure TV is off
Mute ---> 182 ---> Power on

Should bring you in. You should also start with Warm2 as this is closer to D65

First of all, Kashanova, START YOUR OWN THREAD!!!

Second, Brian ... thanks so much for responding, but I actually don't need the codes for the Service Menu; I was just wondering if anyone out there had good numbers for contrast, brightness, sharpness, and color that they could recommend. I've bought and used the Avia disc, but I just seem to have a really tough time getting my picture "just right." I thought I had it adjusted good last night, and then my wife was complaining today that the picture was so dark she could hardly see anything. Please help!

This gets said pretty often, but I will explain it again. Transferring settings from one set to another is NOT CALIBRATION! There are variances within models, differences in sources, differences in environment, and differences in personal preferences.

That said, you can use the settings of others as a starting point, and if the numbers come from someone that has a great deal of experience with a given set, they may be useful. You have to consider, however, the starting conditions. If you get numbers from someone who has tinkered with the service menu or had their set calibrated or OOB, you will have settings that may or may not be moving in the right direction for YOU. If your set is in OOB condition, you want to be getting numbers from someone whose set is starting at the same point. Preferably, from someone who has experience with how the come from the factory who has been able to identify any trends. Note the general trends in settings reported, then use the halfway rule to approximate the best pix from where you are.

It is far better to learn how to adjust your display yourself. Get Avia or DVE, and get GetGray. Download and read the manuals and tutorials for them and learn what each control does to the pix on both patterns typically viewed images. Learn how your sources differ. Learn and experiment and learn some more. You will end up with much more satisfactory results than transferring settings.

Thanks so much, Leonard. You make some great points. Here's my problem, though ... as I stated above, I've gotten the Avia disc, I've tried "tweaking" the picture many, many times using the Avia disc, and I get very mixed results. Sunday night, the picture looked good (after tweaking), and yesterday, during the day, when my wife was watching, the picture was so dark you could hardly see anything. I think the thing I have the hardest time with is "contrast." It's very difficult to set contrast using the Avia disc. I get no "blooming," even with the contrast at 100%. I also read somewhere else that Samsung DLPs typically need "high" contrast settings (80 to 90%). Is this true? Any tips on how to set contrast/brightness with Avia? Also, is "Warm 2" the best setting? Thanks!!!

cmattis, I have an HLN567 and it seems like the HLN series DLPs struggle with dark images when viewed during the day. You may need to tweak your contrast & brightness settings during the day and then drop the brightness 10-20 notches in the evening if it looks too bright.
