View Full Version : Is the rainbow effect as bad on the mitsubishi hd100u as the X1?
puddytay 02-10-07, 12:37 AM Since I've had the X1 I haven't been able to play video games with it or I get very dizzy. I think it has to do with the rainbow effects. Is the mitsubishi any better about this problem? If not what else should I look into? Thanks bp

An LCD projector. If you are sensative to RBE (like me) then why would you still be looking at DLP projectors?
nate358 02-10-07, 01:30 AM I had this problem with the X1 also... and almost gave up on DLP because of it. The X1 only has a color wheel that spins at either 1x or 2x.... I can't remember. The 4805 spins at 4x and is a huge step up. If you want to almost never see it look for a 5x and to see it on a 6x you would have to either have the screen crazy big, sit closer than most, or move your eyes side to side to see it at all. The HD100U has a 4x color wheel and will be tons better than the X1. You will see some RBE, but to minimize it.... sit back at least 1.5 times the width of the screen and get the screen to be about 12 fL of brightness using either a gray screen or a Neutral Density filter. The less your eyes move... the less you'll see it. So if you're really sensitive to RBE try sitting 2.0 times the width of the screen back. Your brain also takes some time adjusting to it. So, you might see it one week and the next (if you aren't looking for it) you won't. The HD100U is a great projector from what I've heard. I personally have a Sharp DT-400... the twin to the XV-Z2000 and it has a 5x color wheel which works great for me. Best of luck to you.
Rob Babcock 02-10-07, 02:07 AM I would think it would be vastly better, but I've never used a DLP with a wheel that slow! Even my first DLP had a 4x color wheel!
Btw, is it just RBE that bugs you with games? Personally I can't play videogames on any PJ, or even a TV over 32". Occasionally FPS's make me dizzy on a 32" direct view! It sucks, really. It doesn't happen every time, but occasionally something like Castle Wolfenstein or HALO will give me nausea and intense vertigo.
puddytay 02-10-07, 03:38 AM Yeah mostly only FPS do it.... But I have a 32 inch tv and I never get dizzy playing on it.... It could be because of the size of the screen but I really think it's the rainbow effect... The reason I think this is because you're moving your eyes left to right allot more on a FPS than any other type of game...
Digital Man 02-10-07, 08:48 AM While I won't discount the possibility that it's RBE, I would offer that it may be simple motion sickness. Even on my computer monitor I can't play FPS's because they give me motion sickness. It may be that the size of the screen amplifies the problem enough that it bother you. An interesting experiment would be to see if you can play some FPS's on someone else's projector, preferably LCD, to see if it also happens there.

mnn1265 02-10-07, 02:39 PM Yeah it's possible it's just motion sickness. I play lots of video games on my projector (LCD Sony HS20) at 106" and occasionally I get some queasy feelings from too much movement - it's a result of such a large screen. When I play WoW and I fall off a cliff from a height it makes my guts wrench! The effect can be strong so that could be the cause.
When you move your eyes back and forth do you see multi-colored streaks following your eyes? Kind of like when you took LSD in college? Ok, never mind that last one but it is a weird psychedelic effect (i.e. distracting) more than a nauseating effect - for me anyway. But then again I never watched a DLP or played games on one for any extended period.
I've actually felt sick from playing some FPS games on my CRT computer monitor as well.
I actually couldn't believe it was happening, but it was.
Flooper 02-10-07, 09:25 PM I have seen both (own and X1 and am borrowing an HD1000U for evaluation), and the HD1000u (and the Optoma HD70 I also tried) are both significantly better with RBE than the X1. With the X1, I could see RBE frequently and even with my head held still. With the HD1000u and HD70, the only way I can see RBE is if I try to create it by shaking my head back and forth. So it's still there on these two machines, it just takes a lot more to induce it, and it happens a lot less frequently.

Also, run a search on rainbows for plenty of information and an official thread.
Thanks,
