In Edmonton every place I have found.....the HD70 is about $150 to $200 cheaper than the HD1000U. Would it be worth that much to get the Mits? I also think the HD70 has less offset which might work better in a basement with a 8 foot ceiling. But if the Mits has a better picture and is a higher quality machine I could just tilt it a bit to make it fit.
The HD70 is about $1150 and the Mits is about $1300 unless there is some other place that is cheaper online.

I have the HD1000 and love it but it and the HD70 are very similar in quality by almost every account. I think the HD1000 wins by a slight edge so you are going to have to decide if that slight edge is worth a couple hundred bucks or not.

One consideration might be the brighter image from the HD1000. You could operate it in low lamp mode and possibly get back your extra up front money through longer bulb life.

Thankyou.....I never thought about the lamp life and cost of new bulbs. I will keep this in mind.

I have had both side by side and kept the Mits. mainly because of better image otb and the brightness. The colors are more natural on the mits and it has a sharper image. The focus/zoom rings are a kludge on the Optoma. My take is that the Mits is substantially better in all departments other than the remote which is toy-like.

I did not like the way the AI worked on the Optoma so left it off. Mits has better black detail and contrast.

The offset is so close it is not a real factor in choosing. 8' ceiling you will be fine with either if you are using a 110" screen or less.

In the US the Mits came in at $100 less than the Optoma. Not a determining factor for me. Would have kept the Optoma if it looked better.

There is a good reason the Mits won the "Editors Choice" at Projector Central. It competes with the $1500 to $2000 projectors like the Panasonic 100 and the Sanyo Z5. It surpasses the above in perceived contrast with any image with some light source in it. No concerns with convergence nor the dreded optical block deconstructing like in the LCD machines.

To get a substantially better picture you would have to go to a Darkchip 3 model.

Mitsubishi projectors appear to have fewer issues than many others. Scan the boards for post about Mits machines that have had problems. They are few and far between. Mitsubishi is a great company that makes great products.

There are lots of threads on the subject. Have you read them? Certainly enough for you to get a sense of what would work for you.

Good info! It really helps to hear from someone who has experience with each one and seen both in action side by side.

If your considering a constant hight theatre, the optoma does the required vertical stretch without an external scaler... which is the determining factor for my purchase... I'd love to see the two side by side, but that won't happen, so I'm going to go with the one that won't require me to buy extra hardware to run the setup I want to. I also read that the optoma does tweak really well... we will see soon I hope :) Best I've seen the optomat for is 1099 cdn.
