View Full Version : Qualia out, Pearl In: Observations?

Well, I've sold my much-loved Qualia 004 recently, and am going to go into the experimental mode. I've ordered an RS-1, but, since I suspect that it will be a while before that's available, I'm going to tide myself over with a Sony Pearl.

I've not seen the Pearl, although I suppose that popular wisdom would consider it an upgrade over its twice-as-expensive big brother, Ruby, though I'm not making that comment. I have seen the Ruby on a number of occasions, and popular wisdom had it that it was an "improvement" over the Qualia. Frankly, I never thought so, and I always felt like I still had the best digital projector available, or at least tied for the lead.

Has anyone made comparisons between a Qualia and a Pearl? From those who have seen both--no cheerleaders for either projector, please--I'm interested in what I'll lose and (fingers crossed) what I might gain.

Nick,
Howbig is your screen -I have a 12 foot Wide Stewart Grayhawk Cinecurve 2:35 Screen and my Qualia 004 lights it up pretty good - I will wait for at least one more year before getting an upgrade - my next projector I want to keep for at least three years.
I am intrested to know your observations -especially as it relates to light output.

Although the bulk of my viewing was done on a 123" screen (before changing residences), I'm now down to a 114" screen. The former screen was an inch short of nine feet wide. I think my current screen is about 100" wide.

I'll let you know. Still interested in comments on the Qualia/Pearl comparison.
