I have a Sharp DLP 56DR650 TV. I just got the VGA cable for my 360 and I hooked it up to my RGB port on my TV.
First, with the component cables my TV can do 1080i, my tv doesn't do 1080p.
When I hook up the VGA cable the highest resolution I can pick is 1320x768 and it doesn't look as clear as 1080i with the comp cables on the xbox dash board. Isn't 1080i resolution = 1920x1080?
So if my TV can do 1080i with comp cables, why can't it do 1920x1080 with the VGA cable???

First, your tv is scaling the 1080i signal down to 720p. That is the native resolution of your tv. Second, you should use what looks best to your eyes. The reason you can't do 1920X1080 is your display does not have enough pixels.

your native res is 1280X720. this is why you cant choose 1920X1080 (1080p)
So assuming 1280x720 is my native rez, or if I can select 1320x768 I think that would be better. How come when my component cables are plugged in the dashboard looks much crisper and not dull like when the VGA cables are in?

calibration.
i believe the dashboard has a 1280x res when you use VGA, try that as well.

First of all: Do you have your Xbox 360 hooked up to Xbox Live? If so, your machine should automatically download the fall update that includes 1920 x 1080 resolution for VGA. This wouldnt help you though, since your TV probably won't support it...but atleast you'll have the option along with other goodies that were passed downstream during the update.
As far as image quality between VGA & component, compare the two and stick with what suits you. Some have sworn that VGA is the second coming. Others (like myself) find component to be sharper, richer, and better overall (excluding overscan and dvd playback issues)...even after weeks and weeks of calibrating.
Stick with what YOU like.

I've just switched back to component after calibrating my tv with the avia disc and am really happy with the results. On my set vga just lacks the image color level that component provides. VGA only allows me to adjust brightness and contrast so there is nothing I can do to make using it more colorful. Calibration has made a HUGE difference for me now while using component cables. The images displayed used to look like shite via component. I can probably still get it to look better since that was my first run calibrating but I'm very happy so far. As the above poster said, use what works best for you.
Yeah based on what I saw, I think I'm going to stick with component on this TV. It's more vibrant than the VGA. Plus since I can't support 1080p on my tv it's not worth having these cables IMO. Thanks all...

well you're still missing out on dvd upconversion. you'll have it in 480p. i'm just glad i have a TV that supports color calibration via VGA.
and you cant go higher than your native res. so why would you try 1320X768 if i told you your native res is 1280X720
Because my TV support 1320x768. That's what it's on right now. Ironically when I set it to 1280x720 it says Unavailable.
