View Full Version : Take a look at EL DORADO baobab 02-11-07, 10:31 PM Turn those boring Grammies off and switch to the 1966 film EL DORADO on HDNET movies. It looks ravishing. golferadam 02-12-07, 03:14 AM Agreed. Looked very nice. Dark Rain 02-12-07, 04:51 AM Awesome transfer for sure. It's one of the best I've seen. baobab 02-12-07, 09:14 AM Hey, that was one funny, entertaining Western. A very, very young James Caan plays a drifter they call Mississippi. I could see this guy growing into Sonny Corleone. TulsaCoker 02-12-07, 09:27 AM I agree about the PQ. Turned it on and my first thought was "wow" excellent transfer. This is what HD should look like on a film. And oh by the way I was watching it on HD Net from D*. AAF 02-12-07, 01:10 PM ...and followed by Red River. Thanks HDNET Movies. Lumpy 02-12-07, 04:29 PM I love this movie. It looked great. One of the 2, John Wayne-Dean Martin, westerns I can never keep straight, because Dean plays the drunk sheriff in both. Both even have the "partly sobered up Dean goes to the bar and redeems his pride" scene. The thing that distinguishes this one for me is the presence of James Caan. I don't remember Mississippi being quite so impetuous though. I hope nobody tries that "homemade antibuse" for real. Bruce Patterson 02-12-07, 09:09 PM I love this movie. It looked great. Yes, its one of my all-time faves as well - also Howard Hawks. I have it on my HD-TIVO from over a year ago - also courtesy of HDNet Movies. Some nice similarities between Rio Bravo and El Dorado - even the sets feel familiar. cdharris 02-13-07, 11:46 AM Red River is black and white and not widescreen, so it does not look spectacular in HD, but it is the greatest western ever filmed. It is the ultimate John Wayne movie and definitely worth watching. Lumpy 02-13-07, 11:48 AM In both, they chased the bad guy into the saloon. After Dean gets humiliated a little while, he kills the fugitive. In Rio Bravo the guy bleeds in his shot glass from the balcony where he's hiding. I was totally expecting that scene, instead he was behind the piano in El Dorado. joed32 02-13-07, 12:27 PM Red River is a great film and it was very watchable on the big screen. Lumpy 02-14-07, 05:42 PM Dean was only in Rio Bravo. Your right! It's Robert Mitchum in El Dorado. I can't believe I kept thinking it was Dean Martin the whole time I was watching it. :o The 2 characters are so similar I must have figured they were the same actor. Granted I was a toddler when these came, I still should have been able to tell the difference. Bruce Patterson 02-15-07, 01:32 PM No problem I love both movies, and Martin and Mitchum both play their respective roles perfectly. I finally watched Red River in HD last night - it was beautiful to watch, although alot of shimmering noticeable at different points. And I love the movie itself although I disagree with it being the "Best Western ever". Too many other excellent titles to consider, starting with The Searchers (probably my pick), The Big Country (a VERY close second), The Magnificent Seven, Once Upon a Time in the West, Rio Bravo, Legend of the Lost, the list goes on and on... LOEWE Groova 02-15-07, 09:13 PM the "Best Western ever". Too many other excellent titles to consider Boy Howdy. You haven't even scratched the surface. A better way would be to list the Top 10 or 20 westerns of each DECADE from at least 1925-1975. Its that wide a genre ( there are a couple of John Ford silents that hardcore enthusiasts rank among his best that might indicate that there were plenty of great early westerns eventhough I only know some names ala Tom Mix, TGTR etc. ). We haven't even mentioned some of the great "Oater" directors, let alone their multiple master class films: Budd Boetticher Anthony Mann Sam Peckinpah Burt Kennedy Sergio Corbucci William Wellman Monte Helman Don Siegel and really so many more. LOL, I never saw the Voom Westerns channel, but if any genre could ever carry an HD channel by its high lonesome, it'd be the western. Bruce Patterson 02-16-07, 07:14 AM Boy Howdy. Thanks Heath - I love the Big Valley too. :) Its on daily on EWST, one of the Starz channels, if I'm not mistaken. Not HD, mind you - but good movies/shows. Hipnotiq 02-16-07, 07:17 PM I don't have anything to add, just that El Dorado is a great movie. XBR11 06-01-08, 10:42 AM I'm watching El Dorado on AMC HD this morning and it sure looks great! I wouldn't have thought an old movie would look so beautiful in HD, but it does. The colors are great, the picture is crisp.
