My builder has just started finishing my basement... I have been looking at both DIY (not an option for me, I don't have time) and the pre-fab kits. I think my ceiling height is right around 8 ft so I am not sure if I can even install a star ceiling.

Does anyone else here have a star ceiling with a similar ceiling height as me? Is this feasible? I would probably buy a 4'x8' panel and have it installed over the drywall; I honestly am not sure how this will look and can't decide if it's worth the $1500 investment.

My ceiling finished height is 7'6" and the star ceiling drops about 2".

Where did you get $1,500 cost from? Mine is not very elaborate but doubt it cost more than $400.

I priced mine out from a pre-made system as in the fabric wrapped and holes already cut.

I don't even use pens to write with anymore, I am as digital as they come....trying to do it myself will result in pure crap results.
