View Full Version : Hitachi Calibration

I have a question about setting the color levels on my Hitachi v500 projection LCD set. I figured other Hitachi's might work the same way, and I'm looking for all the help I can get.

My set has an auto adjustment feature to set red, green and blue levels. It's labeled as "RGB 480p" on my service menu. There really isn't any way for me to manually adjust these items without getting really deep into the service menu, which I don't feel all that comfortable doing.

Anyway, does anyone know if doing this auto adjust feature with one of the calibration DVD's (DVE or Avia) will get my set adjusted correctly? Right now, my picture is kind of out of wack. I didn't know what I was doing, and I accidentally recalibrated my colors without the appropriate pattern on my screen.

The service menu specifically calls for a RGB amplitude adjustment signal, but I have no idea what that is.

Thanks

Greetings

Question is ... auto adjust to what? Can it read your mind? Adjust to your idea of what the image should look like?

Maybe it needs a certain test pattern in order to do this right? Do you know what the pattern is? Do you have it? What if you press it without the right pattern and it totally kyboshes the TV ... how do you get back to where you started?

Things to think hard about when you see a button that says "Do not push"

I think it adjusts the color settings for whatever is on the screen. The test pattern it needs is called the "RGB Amplitude Adjustment Signal" in the service manual. Of course I have no idea what that is. The picture is good now, but just a little too bright for my eyes.

And of course, hindsight is 20/20, and I never should have been messing around in the service menu in the first place.

I was hoping someone familiar with Hitachi would know what this setting was specifically for. It seems to be for color levels and gamma, but I'm far from an expert.

The RGB 480p adjustment requires a half black (16 black) half white (235 white) pattern on the display, through input 1 on the component cables, at 480p. It sets the master brightness and contrast control centers for the user menu, nothing more AFAIK.

If you cursor further down the same menu you will see Drive and Cutoff adjustments for each color, and for each color temperature, 12 in total. This is where you adjust the grayscale. Note that if you make a change to the High settings, all the other temperature settings will move the same amount. Any of the others (Med, Std, and B/W) work independent of the others.

To change color temp in the service menu, cursor to any of the drive or cutoff adjustments and press the select button on the remote, this will take you to the next color temp setting.

Where can I get that test pattern that you mentioned? Is it on any of the calibration discs that I can buy?

I don't think I will have to adjust the drive settings. I never messed with the in the first place.

Thanks for the help, it is greatly appreciated.

I haven't seen the pattern on any disc. What the service tech used on my set was the 3rd contrast pattern on the GetGray disc, it is half black and white, but does have +/- 2% bars in it. It seemed to set itself, this was done after a light engine replacement.

And your picture looked just fine after the adjustment? I think I will probably try this then. GetGray is something I can download off the web and burn to a DVD isn't it?

Sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure I don't mess it up worse than it already is.

Be wary of auto adjust anything. As Michael says, "adjust to what?".
The post above gives you the proper controls for grayscale, but this adjustment requires instrumentation to do correctly.

What kind of instrumentation? Professional tools? Please elaborate.

For what it's worth, Vega's tip did the trick. I ran the half black/half white test pattern and my set is back to normal.

The picture looked good, but something with the contrast was out of wack, because the set was too hard on my eyes. Now it's much better. AVSforum is amazing. You can find out anything here.

I know this is an old Thread, but I figured it is an appropriate place for my question. I have a Hitachi 53FDX20B Rear Projection HDTV. Over the last year, any gray color in the picture started looking more of a pinkish purple color. On top of that, last week the convergence went out of whack and the blue would lock up when I tried to run magic focus or align it manually, so I replaced the convergence IC chips and all the resistors around them and everything went back to normal, but the grays still look purple! I went into the service menu and adjusted the white balance and cranked up the gain on the green and turned down the red gain to make it look gray again. I also set the cut levels to default 80. I forgot where they were at before. Is this the correct way to fix my problem? Or is there another adjustment I should make to fix the purple issue? I read other places that the gray-scale should be adjusted, but I cant find any grayscale settings on this particular model. Ive searched all over google and cant seem to find any information on how to properly tune the colors on a big screen. Any advice would be great!
