I'm using a Mitsubishi D-VHS vcr to record from a Motorola DCT-6200 STB's Firewire port. I was wondering, since this VCR doesn't have an integrated mpeg2 decoder, can I play back the DVHS recording through the STB's FireWire port, or do I have to I have to get a seperate HD receiver. If I have to get a receiver, can anyone make some reasonably priced recommendations? (~200$) Thanks.

I do not beloeve the 6200 has a bidirectional firewire capability. Therefore you need to get a STB that does have a bidirectional capability. Also since the recordings could be encoded to copy once you need a STB that handles the decoding. I use a MIT MDR-200 firewiire STB for recording and playing back OTA. However it does not handle the copy decoding. I believe the T165 does. The T165 has not been made for a long time but is available on resale sometimes.

I haven't heard of a cable STB that allows playback from a firewire source, so I doubt if the 6200 would work.

I have a Samsung SIR-T165 OTA receiver that I use for firewire playback from a MITS DVHS. The only problem is that I can't get it to play 5c encoded material stored on DVHS. Non-5c material works fine. The good thing is that it has a firewire out for recordings. Ebay price is now above $200 since these have been out of production for awhile. Supposedly the 3410a also works for this, including 5c (buit also costs more).

The other option is to buy a used JVC and playback from the MITS through the JVC. You probably can find one for about $250. Cheaper if the tape deck isn't working.

T165 doesn't do 5C? or T165 doesn't do 5C from a mitsu deck?

I suppose I would want an stb that supports 5c. Anyone know of a receiver that definitely does support it?

I could never get it to work from the MITS deck. For example, an HBO-HD DVHS recording does not play back from the MITS through the SIRT-165 to the TV through component. Other OTA and non-5c cable recordings work fine.

My 165 plays all my 5C content.

same experience here. However the same recordings on the same deck (mits 2000) playback fine through the JVC 5u decoder

I can 5c material it to play back from the MITS to a JVC 30000 recorder as well. Maybe its a local Time Warner Cable issue (can a broadcast flag be set by the cable company for a non-OTA channel? -- I'll have to check diagnostics mode on the 3250 for it). I notice you are in Southwest Ohio.

Got a bare T165 ( no remote, etc.). Anyone have experience using universal remotes with this unit?
