Hi, I want to build a soffitt in my media room but don't know how to start. Most of the designs I see here are for regular ceilings. I have a vaulted ceiling. My room size is 22 x 26 with 9' walls. Please Help!! Thanks in advance!!!

Is the vault the same length of the room?( A gable on each end) or is it a hip vault? Either way this a fairly simple project for D.I.Y, it's just that they need to be addressed differently. Also how wide are you planning to build them, and are they going to run the length of the room, all the way around or just one side? And if you don't mind me asking, what will be the purpose of them (hide wires, ductwork).

I would like for it to run all the way around. Im thinking maybe 2 feet wide to run cables and can lights. Also will be making a tray for rope lights. Thanks

How soon are you looking at tackling this project? I don't have my scanners hooked up in my cabin, as we are building a new home, but i could make some quick sketches and mail them to you if you would P.M. me with your address. And still need to know if the vault is gabled on each end or if it is a hip vault. thanks.

Check out the thread in my signature below. I've got a room that was originally vaulted but I'm building a tray ceiling into. It's also at partial construction so if you've got any request for pictures, just ask me.

Take a look at these pics...if this is what you're trying to accompish I may still have the CAD drawings that my brother-in-law (the architect) drew up for this feature.

I had unequal ceiling features and we had to do two different framing processes to make them the same. In the end, it was a lot of framing and drywall work, but it turned out awesome. I also have a "tray" for rope lights above the soffit that shine up to the arch.

Thanks for all the replies. Yes, my room is like that all the way around. I hope you still have the CAD drawings for it.

I use 3\8 drywall for curves and arches. Just mist it with a spay bottle, let it soak, and be careful! (add water as needed and let dry completely before finishing.

Try this with the directions I gave you. I know this is crude, but like I said I don't have my scanners hooked up.

Not exactly the same... but I partially squared off my front wall in a similar fashion, which may work for you.

I think it's really cool to suspend it from the ceiling, just off the edges, using airplane cable or threaded rods.
