No Specs on both releases yet. Will "Night at the Museum" be first $200+ million title with day-and-date release?

I would think that Casino Royale would be the biggest day and date so far.
darinp2 02-12-07, 03:49 PM I would think that Casino Royale would be the biggest day and date so far.It might be the biggest as far as excitement, but in the US "Night at the Museum" actually brought in a lot more at the box office.

GeorgeLV 02-12-07, 03:51 PM Will be picking up Night at the Museum, but Eragon is so bad that I walked out even though I was dragged by company to go see it in the theatres.
I would think that Casino Royale would be the biggest day and date so far.
Casino Royale did well at the box office ...$166 million. Night at the Museum was #5 this past weekend and continues to add to its $232 million total thus far. Casino Royale is the better movie but its not in the same box office league as Night at the Museum ...at least not in the US.
Yeah, Night At The Museum is still going strong (just a 10% drop last weekend) and is probably looking at $250 mil in the U.S. alone.

Weird, Night at the Museum is really awful, but it outdid one of the best films of the year. Didn't expect that!
I guess you can never underestimate the power of a kid's flick (unless it's named Charlotte's Web).

Its the old principle at play again ...if you appeal to a wider audience, you will make more money. Night at the Museum is a family movie ...kids eat up those CGI animals/historic figures both miniature and large.

That must be why. I have been out of the kid mindset for too long to even remember that they carry a lot of influence on what film mum and dad are going to see at the weekend, parents probably want to see CR, but the kids, inevitably, win.

It will be interesting to see if us early adopters follow the general publics trend(more copies of Night at the Museum sold) or our own(more copies of Casino Royale sold).
I think I will only be purchasing Casino.

best films of the year? it comes down to personal taste in the end, some people do not like action movies.......................also, never underestimate a family oriented movie. those have a lot more going for them considering adults and children can watch.......................
egcarter 02-12-07, 04:30 PM On a worldwide basis, A NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM (with still several territories to go) has grossed around $440 million, CASINO ROYALE has done $581 million.

Dr Kain 02-12-07, 05:07 PM Eh, Eragon can kiss my shiny skid plate.
Kroenen 02-12-07, 05:46 PM Thanks for the heads up SyHD.
I look forward to seeing the specs on these two.

Note they don't include the extras of the 2-disc edition.
Neo1965 02-21-07, 05:34 PM Scathing review for Eragon, missed it in theatres. I wonder if I'll like it? Chances are it will be added to my collection of movies to nap to when I do get it.
I like movies about dragons. I think I have them all, even D&D, and I agree that was a terrible movie.
darinp2 02-21-07, 05:41 PM I wonder if Fox delayed the DVD and Blu-ray release for "Night at the Museum" because it is still making so much at the box office (made almost $5 million over the weekend with Monday's holiday). As far as Eragon, I think I'll go with the last Harry Potter movie to have a good scene with a dragon for showing off.

nharmon91 02-21-07, 05:43 PM nice to see it has DTS-HD MA
darkjedi664 02-21-07, 05:47 PM I would think that Casino Royale would be the biggest day and date so far.
CR only made $166.7 Million, NATM made $237.3 Million.
Icemage 02-21-07, 05:54 PM CR only made $166.7 Million, NATM made $237.3 Million.
That's not a fair comparison, though.
For disc sales, the price of admission is a single disc for the whole family.
For theatre sales, it's X number of kids + Y number of parents for family movies like NatM, even if the parents don't really want to see the film.
For more adult films like Casino Royale, you could go to the theatre alone and not feel out of place.
I think both films will do well on Blu-ray disc, and the disc sales will be noticeably different than the box office results due to the parent factor.

Very likely. In fact, Fox was going to release it earlier and was the subject of great criticism by exhibitors, including some boycotts. Pulling it back only makes sense.
There are a number of articles describing how the industry is handling this. Basically, the studios are giving "soft" notice to the retail sector that an order date is coming up, but without making a public announcement. They are trying to reduce the actual window (traditionally 4 months) without making a big deal about it.
There are articles about this.
ryoohki 02-21-07, 08:09 PM Cool.. i never bought a 2 disc edition , only rarely i did that. I prefer audio commentary and video commentaries.. NATM looked splendid at IMAX... i hope the transfert will be nice..
I'll be picking up Eragon and Night At The Museum. My son saw Eragon in the theater and liked it so that BD will be for him. I'll check it out but quite frankly the trailer didn't impress me much.
OMG I think I am gonna be sick of Fox. If DVDTimes is correct, NatM will be on a BD25 using MPEG-2.
Who the hell is running Fox home video division???? Anyone want to start a petition to ask Fox to get their act together?

darkjedi664 02-21-07, 11:46 PM Oh boy, yet ANOTHER person complaining about MPEG-2...sigh.

I'll be getting Eragon also.
Eragon is definitely a kids movie. I took my kids to see it ... not the greatest film but the dragon was just great. My kids (7 +9 - boys) just loved it (they went to see it 2x).
I think it's a good story but they didn't do a good job putting it the screen. I'm guessing they focused to much on FX and not enough on the storyline.
Greg Kettell 02-22-07, 09:18 AM I won't be happy if NatM is a BD25 MPEG2, but I may still buy it.
Eragon is a rental regardless.
DigitalfreakNYC 02-22-07, 11:01 AM Oh boy, yet ANOTHER person complaining about MPEG-2...sigh.
So we should be happy with $40 barebones discs?!?!
Mr. Cinema 02-22-07, 11:30 AM CR only made $166.7 Million
that's funny. You make it sound like $166.7 million isn't alot.
chartwel 02-22-07, 04:46 PM that's funny. You make it sound like $166.7 million isn't alot.
he also doesnt seem to understand that the 166.7 million was from the US alone. ~587 million world wide - 150 million budget = 437 million total made. seems like a pretty d*mn successful movie to me...............
although im sure not all of that was exactly profit as they have marketing fees and such but still the movie made a whole lot of money. and for good reason, its a good movie. i will be picking this up on blu-ray thats for sure.
egcarter 02-22-07, 06:15 PM Well, Fox officially announced the DVD release of NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM (with separate one and two-disc versions) earlier this week with a detailed press release, but there was no mention of the BD version. I dunno if it will still make the day-and-date release (totally possible)...or if it will trail the DVD release by an as yet unannounced period.
