Having played PB on MAME using the Xbox controller, I gotta say that without the handlebars, it's going to be something of a nightmare to maneuver. Still, I suppose I'll be willing to learn, as this was one of my favorite arcade games ever.

:D I know the last time I was impressed with XBLA or satisfied was when Contra was released...I will be satisfied next when Alien Hominid comes out...

Well, Paperboy is here, and it's as much fun as I remembered. I'm stoked that the 360 controller works a lot better on the XBLA version than it does in the MAME environment, but the stoke-age goes down a little bit when I look and see that fully 1/3 of the achievements require you to play either co-op or versus on Xbox Live. Bleah. PB was very much a single-player experience, and I disagree with this choice.

I dig the interface that Midway created for the game, and the newsprint patterns filling up the dead space to the left and right of the main screen. It's notable that Paperboy used a 4:3 display instead of the long, tall screens employed by Galaga and Ms. Pac-Man, so there's not so much waste on our big home theater displays.

Of course, with perfect emulation comes the flaws that took some of the fun out of the arcade original. Collision detection is just plain schizophrenic; your newspapers just seem to fly right through all manner of targets, and it can be hard to tell if you're going to brush by the right of that row of hedges or if you're gonna go splat. It's also annoying that most of the obstacles you need to avoid -- such as cars and staggering drunk dudes -- don't appear on the screen until you're already on top of them. C'mon, the paperboy oughta be able to see that old junker all the way down the block -- not when he's only five feet away. The left side of the screen is almost completely wasted on scenery that doesn't even affect gameplay.

Quibbles aside, there are just so many different characters and obstacles that it's hard not to love this game for what it is. Also, keep in mind that these are the kinds of things that REAL PAPERBOYS deal with all the time. Don't believe me? Check out this YouTube video:

This game actually inspired me to get a paper route (for about a week)... :)

I'm having a problem getting one achievement to register. I've delivered 7 papers on Monday at least 3 times now on Hard, and my achievement isn't showing up. Anyone else?
