View Full Version : "Planet Of The Apes" Impressions
tkbryant 02-13-07, 03:19 PM Kind of surprised after reading a couple reviews that this title didn't look as good as they had hoped that I found it looked quite good on my 61" Sammy DLP screen. I can kind of see that maybe some scenes aren't as spectacular...the jungle scenes in particular have that hazed, steam ridden appearance that can flatten an image. The greens however pop in those scenes and give it more life than the muted SD version.
Other scenes just blew me away....the bright desert scenes fared quite well and others here and there are jaw dropping and just damn near perfect. Details, especially in the apes costumes are much much better...closeups are impressive as well.
If your looking for new audio demo material...this one is it. The pod crash sequence in the beginning was just off the charts with surround levels and details. Very very impressive stuff here. I was more than worried with this one...and I actually cancelled my order but later re-ordered after hearing about the fantastic audio. Glad I did cause this is a great disc.
mcallister 02-13-07, 03:46 PM is the audio PCM?

Nope, it's Fox so it's DTS-MA for lossless audio. Hopefully the PS3 will be updated to decode it.

Gary Murrell 02-13-07, 04:38 PM this movie was great on D-Theater, it was nice and soft yet very detailed (the best way something can look IMHO), no falseness EE or etc., amazing color palette
I can't wait to get this on BD, it is very very film like indeed, which as nothing less than I have come to expect from Fox
I also agree on the audio for this movie TK, the pod at the beginning has some of the best most nature sound and bass I have ever heard in a film, the DTS 1.5MB core should be good enough for most people  :D
gosh I need to get this disc for sure, first I need a player though

What happened to your Sammy player Gary?
cueCrew 02-18-07, 12:59 PM I rented this one, but will definitely watch out for the right price so I can add it to my collection. The audio is very impressive and the pod entry scene is one of the best you will hear. This is not just about loudness and intensity but complexity and environment as well. Unique sounds come from different speakers in ways that draw you in to the experience other than the usual "big boom, residual to the surrounds" sound design and as a result is pleasantly unpredictable.
For some reason, this movie is a whole lot more enjoyable this time around. Perhaps it is helped by a cast that most of us will be much more familiar with this time around. Mark Wahlberg (Dignam!) and there is also Tim Roth (creepy good), Michael Clarke Duncan, Helena Bonham Carter, Paul Giamatti and of course, Charleton Heston. Deep Roy is in it as well.
For someone who normally isn't a big fan of extras, I really went looking for them on this one. All you find is a handful of trailers - most of which, you will have seen by now - and an audio commentary track. No doubt there is an opportunity to double-dip with costume and makeup featurettes and "before and after" shots.
I was dissapointed with it. some scenes were spot on. but others were not.
the Transfer was all over the place.
the sound was amazing tho.

I think alot of it has to do with Tim Burton's stylized look for alot of his films. Some shots are out of focus while others are razor sharp. The hi-def formats are exposing us to alot more things we aren't used to seeing on SD. I would like to see Fox revisit this with a BD-50 AVC encode one day. It will be interesting to see what the studios can do to up the pic quality on the inevitable double-dips that will be coming.
The audio however can only get better once DTS-HD Master Audio is unleashed...I can't even begin to imagine how good this movie can sound because the audio right now is just reference and demo worthy already.
Chad Varnadore 02-18-07, 04:13 PM I don't equate softness with film. I saw Apes projected on film at a screen size many, many times our own 92"s. I'm confident it can look a lot better based on that experience. But AVC and/or 50GBs isn't what's needed. They can do much more than this with 25GBs and MPEG2. Disc size and codec had very little to do with why this disc looks the way it does. What is most likely needed is an update to the master.
I'm with Gary! I loved the DTHEATER version... I bet the Blu ray comes out awesome. :)
AaronSCH 02-19-07, 01:04 AM I might be motivated to pick this one up but it is, without-a-doubt, Tim Burton's worst film. This feeble effort could have been the start of a new series of "Apes" epics. Instead it was a poorly executed flop that represents a tragic lost opportunity. Much of the film feels like a television movie of the week. The script was lame, the sets looked fake and the acting was stiff. I just hope it sells enough to motivate Fox to release the only great "Planet of the Apes." film. You know, the original. Well, since they have been so successful in the past, maybe someone at the Sci-Fi channel can breathe new life into this franchise.
Chris Blount 02-19-07, 06:29 AM I thought it looked and sounded pretty good. No complaints here.
