I see this is a bd-50 release, and it has a PCM soundtrack, but I cant seem to find this movie's video codec. Anyone know?

Departed on blu-ray is 1080p/VC-1 according to High-Def Digest.

Warner just remuxes their VC1 encode from the HD DVD release.

Exactly...and that's what all studios should do to get maximum $$$. To be format neutral for a studio makes sense. The costs to produce for both formats are not significant higher. But they could sell a lot more of discs.

Let's not start the thread crapping. And since the OP question is already answered, I vote that this one gets moved to the bigger Departed thread or closed.

hddvd gimping another release. Oh well. If you got 50gb, use it.

If not for HD DVD, this release probably wouldn't even be VC-1. The only VC-1 titles on Blu Ray that I'm aware of are Warner Bros. movies that are exact duplicates (for video anyway) of their HD DVD counterpart. Would you rather it be MPEG 2 and take up all 50 GB of space? Same difference.

Disney started using VC-1. Flightplan and Casanova are VC-1. Pirates 1 and 2 will be too.

It's still early in the game and it makes sense for Warner just to use the HD DVD transfer, but I would hope that in the future they use the advantage blu-ray offers by offering higher bitrate transfers.

On the positive side, it's good to see that they finally gave us a PCM soundtrack. They should keep that practice up with future releases.

VC-1 obviously, since that is the best codec out there.
