View Full Version : League of Extraordinary Gentlement Review up at Hi Def Digest wishman35 02-14-07, 09:26 AM http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/leagueofextraordinarygentlemen.html pretty bad review considering its really high place on the tier list MitchR 02-14-07, 10:33 AM happens more and more lately except for the Departed. Planet of the Apes got a 3,5 score on HiDefDigest for PQ, while it got a 9 for video over @ dvdtown weird scores lately  eXgo 02-14-07, 10:37 AM League suxed hard. I mean a Vampire that can go out in the daytime sun? How big of a discrepancy is that?... - and the tier lists are totally subjective and mean "nothing" when it comes down to the brass tax. dpags 02-14-07, 10:38 AM League suxed hard. I mean a Vampire that can go out in the daytime sun? How big of a discrepancy is that?... Angel can do it! :) eXgo 02-14-07, 10:40 AM Angel can do it! :) Thats cuz Oz brought him the Gem of Amara, in the episode Harsh Light of Day that he actually destroyed.. or when he gets turned Human. jbug 02-14-07, 10:42 AM In Bram Stoker Dracula (Coppola) the narrater says, "contrary to popular belief a vampire can go out during the day, but his powers are weakened." That quote probably came from the original book. Free 02-14-07, 10:44 AM I have it, but it won't play on my Pioneer, so I don't know what it looks like. :( dpags 02-14-07, 10:45 AM Thats cuz Oz brought him the Gem of Amara, in the episode Harsh Light of Day that he actually destroyed.. or when he gets turned Human. Damn, someone has watched it a lot more than I have! :) Hopefully, we'll get that on BD soon! nyg 02-14-07, 12:26 PM http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/leagueofextraordinarygentlemen.html pretty bad review considering its really high place on the tier list I agree with their 3 out of 5 PQ rating wholeheartedly. I bought this disc because of everyone's gloating about its PQ only to be disappointed. Didn't help that the movie sucks monkeyballs either. eightninesuited 02-14-07, 12:31 PM Kris Deering gave it a 5/5 for video. nyg 02-14-07, 12:35 PM Kris Deering gave it a 5/5 for video. Maybe I was just expecting to be wowed, which I certainly was not. ;) hassoon 02-14-07, 12:37 PM Wow...I guess PQ can be pretty darn subjective sometimes :) . LXG is good for mindless fun, but it's also a pretty good waste of Sean Connery's talent. The man's not getting any younger. Give hime something worthwhile! tkbryant 02-14-07, 12:51 PM I definitely disagree with HDDigest on this one. LXG is in my top 10 blu-ray for PQ. And I think its placement on the tier thread is right on. I agree with you...it's one of the best looking & sounding Blu-ray titles out there. I usually agree with his reviews but every now and then I don't. This one is way off the mark. This is the only negative or unfavorable review I have read as far as audio and video quality are concerned on this title. cjr1 02-14-07, 01:10 PM I think it looks pretty good also, but I guess there are 2 ways of looking at PQ, one way is just how it looks in general with no regard to the source, and the other is how it looks compared to the source. Of course I don't nitpick as much as some and I am more critical of audio myself (which is why I am furious there is no DTS-MA decoding on PS3 yet!). Nox 02-14-07, 01:24 PM League suxed hard. I mean a Vampire that can go out in the daytime sun? How big of a discrepancy is that?... Ever hear of Bram Stroker (1847-1912)? eXgo 02-14-07, 01:53 PM ^that's Dracula. he was special. cuz he is the First. Larry Sutliff 02-14-07, 01:59 PM League suxed hard. I mean a Vampire that can go out in the daytime sun? How big of a discrepancy is that?... - and the tier lists are totally subjective and mean "nothing" when it comes down to the brass tax. Hey, Dracula was able to move about during the daytime in the original Stoker novel, and Drac is the guy who turned Mina Harker into a vampire. So perhaps the discrepancy is in the countless other vampire flicks. ;) PS I'm not saying this to defend LEAGUE, it's a fairly mediocre movie that just happens to look nice. EDIT: You beat me to it, Nox! eXgo 02-14-07, 02:02 PM Fledglings are just freaks that drink blood. they are braindead. Dracula is the only one with powers, that can Morph, have the Thrall, and fly etc etc etc. jbug 02-14-07, 02:31 PM In Bram Stoker Dracula (Coppola) the narrater says, "contrary to popular belief a vampire can go out during the day, but his powers are weakened." That quote probably came from the original book. Let me quote myself from above. eXgo 02-14-07, 03:03 PM "but his powers are weakened" "his" not her. :S dpags 02-14-07, 03:04 PM Hey don't forget Blade! :) rfisher 02-14-07, 03:22 PM I also thought it looked great. Cheesy popcorn fun too! TazExprez 02-14-07, 03:47 PM I have League on SD DVD and I absolutely hate its story. I finished watching the movie because I bought it, but it was long and boring. If this was the best looking and sounding BD, I would not buy it. MrHunt 02-14-07, 09:41 PM Remember though... this is a "guest" reviewer... not Peter. hobbs47 02-14-07, 10:20 PM I thought it looked great in some spots, soft in others, but overall pretty good. Not 5/5,but not 3/5 either.Let's settle on 4/5. :D Esox50 02-14-07, 10:58 PM Not to get too far off topic, but I really hope Sony Pictures releases an awesome version of Bram Stoker's Dracula...I used to be impressed with the old Superbit version.. Last I read, American Zeotrope was involved with the BD, but that was last year. Who knows, but paidgeek said to look for it to be announced "in the coming weeks". Neo1965 02-15-07, 10:10 AM Actually, my complaint with LXG was the story --- especially Capt Nemo's sub. The PQ I didn't see the problems on HDDigest. I think all reviews are subjective, and the more familiar a reviewer is with the story/comic/book, the more critical he can be. I never read the comics of LXG, but I thought the movie itself was hokey, but I really didn't think the PQ was that bad. I was also similarly let down by by first screening of Hitchhiker's Guide(a series of books I read multiple times) , but subsequent screenings was better --- Don't even mind the filmgrain on that one. Anyway, when I watched LXG, I did not have a problem with the PQ. tlreddragon 02-15-07, 12:25 PM Important to keep in mind that this review was written by someone called Kenneth Brown, not Peter Bracke like usual. Perhaps the workload was too much who knows. However, I would advise people to stay away from dvdtown and dvdfile (especially reviews by Dan Ramer). Dvdtown is a joke they pretty much throw darts at numbers to get scores. Dvdfile used to be respectable until Dan Ramer came in and maxed out the PQ rating for just about every Blu-ray title. He gave a 9/10 for The Tailor of Panama which is ridiculous, and a 10/10 for Hitchhiker's Guide while everyone else gave it no more than a 3.5/5 HPforMe 02-15-07, 12:38 PM It is one of the worst movies around in my book. It's one of the titles (of the approx. 80 HD DVD and blu ray titles I own) I wouldn't buy even if the PQ and AQ were 10. TazExprez 02-15-07, 08:00 PM It is one of the worst movies around in my book. It's one of the titles (of the approx. 80 HD DVD and blu ray titles I own) I wouldn't buy even if the PQ and AQ were 10. I agree. Tenkaipalm 02-15-07, 08:40 PM League is one of the worst Comic Book Adaptations ever... but I didn't think it was THAT bad. My biggest gripe was the addition of Tom Sawyer, and making him a significant character. mr stroke 02-15-07, 09:24 PM Suppisingly I thouht the movie was ok, I thought it would be a complete turd like Underworld Evo, BUT it wasn't to bad(not really good either)..as for the PQ I thought it was tier 0-right up there with Black Hawk Down and Open Season...some of the darker night scenes looks 3D... |
