When I first set up my hdtv cable box last year at this time the Tonight Show was sharp and clear and looked great but as the months rolled on it lost that look and now today it looks almost sd.

I thought it might be the station here but Connan looks great so something else is wrong.

It looks great here on Comcast in Michigan.

I always felt the quality of The Tonight Show went south when NBC gave it to the unfunny Leno instead of genius Dave.

....oh....you mean PICTURE quality!!! :D

Couldn't tell ya....I watch Letterman, and it's PQ is just fine. Conan also looks very nice in HD @ 12:35.

On the very few times I've tuned in to Leno, the HD has always looked good, though.

You mean the genius Dave of yesterday or that old guy forcing fun at CBS?

Lets turn this into another Letterman bashing thread, those are always interesting

I totally agree, he is almost painful to watch now.

I thought it might be the station here but Connan looks great so something else is wrong. The fault is either your station or your cable provider, because the PQ on The Tonight Show is as good as ever. Compare the PQ from your OTA feed, and if that looks good, then the fault is with your cable provider. If the fault is with the OTA feed, then call the broadcaster's engineering department to complain.

I find it difficult to believe it is my cable or station because Connan comes on right after Leno and it looks great and that is on the same station, same signal.

The 11:30PM broadcast slot is apparently not as conducive to good humor. The comedians just don't feel the audience is that smart, so they have to explain or belabor punch lines. And they don't aim too high to begin with...

Dave at 12:30 and Leno doing his full stand up routine elsewhere, are or were actually pretty funny...

There's definitely something wrong with Leno tonight (Thursday 2/15/07) - it looks like 480p widescreen. Definitely not full res 1080i quality. Watching the Jaywalking All-Star segment right now. The HD bug is in the lower left corner.

WKYC-DT Cleveland via WOW cable on a 50" 1080p plasma.

Threads in the past have stated that The Tonight Show uses a filter while Letterman and Conan do not. Could explain why it doesn't look quite as sharp, but doesn't explain any perceived loss in image quality.

Leno also requires an additional backhaul path from LA to NY. Letterman and Conan do not.

Jim Carrey's tie pattern has no detail in it, nor does Leno's American flag lapel pin. When they came back from commercial, Leno was very blurry looking for a few seconds.

The issue is that Leno isn't as sharp as it was in the past.

It was really noticeable a few weeks back when Meredith Vieira was a guest. Everytime they would switch to closeup it would blur a bit hiding facial details.

Glad Letterman doesn't do that.

Dave at 12:30 and Leno doing his full stand up routine elsewhere, are or were actually pretty funny...At least Dave and Jay can (usually) go through a whole show without mentioning the word "penis" at least once (usually just for "shock value", and not necessarily in the context of a joke), unlike that other, sophmoric, juvenile guy  ;).

When did Leno first start airing in HD?I've searched and can't find the info.
Thanks.

never mind.

On April 26, 1999, the show began broadcasting in 1080i HDTV, becoming the first American nightly talk show to be shot in high definition. The show is shot in 16:9 aspect ratio with a 4:3 center-cut for standard definition television sets

I noticed that also. The same thing happened with guest Helen Mirren. The lack of detail occurred on close-up shots which were shot at an angle different than the main camera.

If you are watching on an NBC-owned station, odds are one factor is the bandwidth given to the NBC subchannel "Weather Plus." :(

I don't know if anyone of you are getting this, but mine is screwed up tonight. It's like the color of his skin is lagging. So when he moves his hands the color of it lags behind and his hands are gray until he stops moving them. It's really weird. And now that I'm typing this, it seems to have been fixed.

It seemed to have been fixed after they showed that little 4:3 segment.

I noticed that here as well.I thought maybe it was the local station WDTN which I get OTA,so I switched to WLWT out of Cincy and same thing.Must be a goof by NBC,but now it is ok.Anyhow,Off to explore the other channels here.Maybe watch the Beverly Hillbillies.
