why dont dish and directv offer all hd locals like brighthouse does. who would even subscribe to sat. service providers. i live in indy and directv offers everything except cbs hd (iu basketball, afc football), and dish offers no locals. how do these other companies even exist in this market?

Lower prices, promise of adding the services. Some people get so jaded by a Cable Co, they will go to any competition just to get away. Others pick up their HD locals via OTA antenna's. E* and D* both have OTA Tuners enabled in their STB's to pull in locals.
D* has said that once their two new birds are in the air, they will be able to offer HD for 1500 LiL channels via spotbeams. This includes local channels in HD, RSN HD, etc.
There are many options for people that chose not to pay what they deem to be "exorbitant prices" to a Cable Co.
Not that is matters, but I'm a Comcast sub...
