jefbal99 02-15-07, 08:12 AM Welcome to the new Lansing, MI HDTV/DTV thread. Currently HDTV is available from seven sources: OTA (Over the air), Comcast Cable, BroadStripe Cable, D* (Direct TV), E* (Dish Network), at&t UVerse, and Westphalia Broadband. With Michigan's "Cable Franchise" laws changing after the '06 election, hopefully we will see some more competition in the area from new providers.
Previous Lansing, MI – HDTV Thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=233233)
The Lansing/Jackson DMA consists of the following counties: Clinton, Eaton, Hillsdale, Ingham, and Jackson
OTA Transmission Towers are located as follows:

Thanks to garybliev and WKAR for the updated map.
Having issues with an HDTV broadcast? Hook up an OTA antenna and check the broadcast signal (make sure the issue is not with a Cable or DBS provider). Best bet is to call the station and have them check with Engineering/Master Control. Typically they will not transfer you to MC, but politely ask if they can get a message to engineering or MC that their HD feed is not turned on or what the issue is (IE no audio on the HD feed, showing the wrong programming, etc). Emailing the station will not resolve the issue immediately, best bet is to spend 10 mins on the phone.

*Other stations may tune in depending on your location/antenna setup, however, these are the channels designated to provide content for the Lansing/Jackson DMA.
**Comcast has multiple cable networks/channel line ups in the Lansing area. Some parts of East Lansing do not have all the HD channels that are available to the rest of Lansing and Michigan State University has no HD availability on campus.
***Currently D* doesn’t carry any Lansing DMA channels in HD. Some D* STB’s have OTA tuners enabled that allow you to get local HDTV with an antenna.

Hey so what is going to go on with AT&T entering the market? Will Comcast go bye bye?
garybliev 02-15-07, 09:05 AM (thanks for the start of the new thread)
If you happen to use the Comcast HD STB (Motorola DCT 6142) here are a couple of suggestions. I've noticed that these units tend to run, well, warm, if not hot.
1. The intake fan for the cooling is on the bottom of the unit. There is not a lot of clearance. Suggest raising the unit say 3/4", two pieces of 2x1 cut to front-to-back size and placed under the feet will raise it and allow air to come in much easier.
2. Likewise, you won't want anything on top of the unit either.
3. When the power is on, the hard drive is on. Be sure to turn the unit off except when you want to be viewing programs. If you have set an event for record, it will wake up to record it.
CPanther95 02-15-07, 09:31 AM Nice summary, jefbal99.
mmmm new thread (dont know why, but ok).
We're trying to get an HD summary in the first post of all local threads that is periodically updated. If we can't get the OP to do it, we need to have a volunteer start a new thread. Newbies can be directed to the first post, and hopefully 90% of the common questions can be answered. Since the first post and last post are always only 1-click away, not utilizing the first post is a big waste of functionality and forces members to the end of (potentially) very long threads.
Titan TV is reporting that WZPX's 43-3 is changing from "Ion W" to "ION Life" on Feb 19.

I don't think Comcast will ever go buh bye, however, I will be very happy to see some other choices in the markets.
I actually voted "no" on the proposal back in November. It had no mention of net neutrality, nor did it require franchise to provide video services to all households in an area.
Companies like at&t can just run lines into the "wealthy" areas and ignore everyone else. I previously lived on the south side of lansing. Wasn't the best neighborhood, but the rent was really cheap. I can guarentee that at&t would never run FOIS lines in that area and it would really piss me off that if I moved a miles or so in any direction, it would prolly be there.
Also, with statewide franchises rather than local, many city governments will now have to foot the bill for their public broadcast channel/equipment.
Another provider may be "Westphalia Telephone/Broadband" in DeWitt. The company was running lines last Summer and my Pop talked to one of the techs, he said that it was essentially for a "Triple Play" (voice/data/video) if the Proposal was passed in Nov '06. I can't find anything online except State filings for the company, not sure really what they offer. Anybody have info on them?
Edit in: Found this Press Release (http://www.occamnetworks.com/news_and_press/press_releases/pr153.cfm) from the company they are getting hardware from
Edit in2: Found a phone number for Westphalia Telephone Co. and called them, then are called Westphalia Broadband now and are providing "triple play" services to DeWitt, St. Johns, and Westphalia. They can be found online at www.4wbi.net. There website includes a pdf file for cable TV channels. Currently they do not offer any HDTV services.
Edit in3: Westphalia Broadband is working on HD offerings, however, it won't be until late Q3 '07 or Q4 '07. Also, their secretary person thought that the Feb '09 Analog shutoff meant that everything would be in HD, but said it was occurring in Feb '08. I politely corrected her...
Does anyone know the QAM channel for FOX on Comcast cable in EL?
jefbal99 02-16-07, 11:31 AM Does anyone know the QAM channel for FOX on Comcast cable in EL?
If you are on the EL Network and not Lansing, Comcast doesn't offer WSYM, due to bandwidth issues. You'll need an OTA antenna to get FOX programming in HD

Thanks- I was hoping to put the Antenna and additional tuner on another TV.

Sorry, from what I've been told and heard, the EL network is the old TCI network and is still in the 550Mhz range, but I can't confirm that.
jefbal99 02-17-07, 12:23 AM Anybody else getting no audio from WILX-HD during Leno? I reported it to the newsroom, and as usual, they just dropped into SD. There was still no audio track coming through, so I emailed Gary King.
zemkedan 02-17-07, 09:01 AM I also had no sound for Leno last night, then it switched to SD for Conan, still no sound. Analog WILX was fine. I thought it was a Comcast problem, though, as WLNS-HD and WLAJ-HD kept losing signal as well.
This morning all I'm getting from WILX-HD is a static green pattern.
zemkedan 02-17-07, 09:14 AM I know this was asked about on the old thread, so I decided to list the QAM channels I get from Comcast if you want to add them to the listing above. This is on the East Lansing network, so Lansing might be different.
2-3 The Golf Channel (SD)
12-3 WLAJ-HD – ABC Affiliate
13-3 WLNS-DT – CBS Affiliate
17-x Comcast iN DEMAND stations
18-x (Occasionally something appears here, not sure what station it is)
25-2 WILX-HD – NBC Affiliate
25-3 WKAR-HD – PBS Affiliate
25-14 WILX-WX – Local Weather (SD)
26-1 Disney Channel (SD)
26-2 Nickelodeon (SD)
26-4 Food Network (SD)
26-5 CNN (SD)
26-6 C-SPAN (SD)
26-7 C-SPAN2 (SD)
26-9 SOAPnet (SD)
26-10 diy (SD)
26-11 C-SPAN3 (SD)
26-12 The Weather Channel (SD)
68-x Digital music stations
69-9 The History Channel (SD)
69-10 Bravo (SD)
69-11 HGTV (SD)
74-4 G4 (SD)
76-11 CMT (SD)
jefbal99 02-17-07, 11:02 AM added the HD and local weather to the list. If anybody can get WSYM's QAM channel number, then I'll update it.

WLAJ and WLNS were fine last night. It stayed with no audio into Conan, then I went to bed. All stations seem to be fine this morning, but its all SD content.
jefbal99 02-19-07, 10:23 AM It was nice to see WILX get NHL on NBC HD working this weekend. I was bouncing between Golf, Pre-Race and the NHL and the PQ was great, audio was great. Very nice presentation. Hopefully it stays that way through the season and playoffs

UHD replayed the game in a late night slot. I was watching the Daytona 500 live. I thought Fox did a good job overall. Good to see HD on all the in-car cameras.
jefbal99 02-20-07, 07:58 AM You a D* sub? Wondering where you get UHD from.
spotdog14 02-20-07, 09:55 AM What is up with Comcast's re-broadcast problems with WILX last night? I was like i was watching OTA with a bad antenna.
When i switched over to OTA it was fine, so it had to be something with Comcast, anyone else notice this?
cornell_lingus 02-20-07, 11:37 AM You a D* sub? Wondering where you get UHD from.
Yep. Looking forward to those two new birds later this year. 100+ HD national channels probably by football season. plus HD locals and Fox Sports Detroit HD whenever available.

Hopefully they get both birds up this year. If the 2nd one doesn't go up then no HD LiL or FSN HD because all the spotbeams are on the 2nd bird.
It'll depend on what happens with Sea Launch.
On to some Comcast News...
I talked with a Comcast "Senior Rep" last week because of some issues I had with customer service. He told me that Comcast is in the process of upgrading the pipeline that comes into Lansing. He was very vague about the specifics, however, he said that once that is complete, we should get UHD, A&E HD, NG HD. He would not provide a timeframe for this to occur.
He also mentioned that both Lansing and Grand Rapids were not going to get FSNHD or VSGLF for a bit longer, but because of the customer outcry when the upgrade didn't occur, they made it happen. Apparently, no one at Comcast had a clue that the STB message went out and it was in error. I always take anything from Comcast with a grain of salt, I think it was a case of the left hand not knowing what the right was doing. With all the people that work for Comcast in the Lansing and Grand Rapids markets, I bet at least one person saw the message on their STB and said something. But thats just my opinion
I also asked about the Comcast/Tivo software update and he had no clue. When I mentioned Tivo he went into a sales pitch for the Comcast DVR. I explained that I was a DVR subscriber, however, I was wondering about the Tivo software update that was announced at CES. He had no clue, so I assume its gonna be awhile before we see that.
Overall, I'm very happy with my current service from Comcast and what is coming down the road. I'd really like to see an HD Special Events Channel that shows season long sports packages in HD and the HDNet's. I know that the HDNet's won't happen, EVER, but the Special Events Channels are poping up on the East Coast, so hopefully in time for next seasons NHL Center Ice.

Sorry, forgot to ask. Start emailing Comcast and just continually ask to have a Senior Rep call you. It'll take a bit, but you might be able to get some answers from them.
I missed something in your post...
You got a 6416?
I may need to pay a visit to the Comcast office, I'd love the extra 40gb of space on the DVR for more HDTV. I'm still stuck with the 6412 III.
Is that the Dual Tuner model or the single tuner?
(copied this over from the other thread)
Yes, it's a 6416 III. HDD is 160Gb, dual tuner. It's up and running without trouble now. They have a pile of them. I'm pretty happy with it as SD quality is much improved from the old box (forget the model #, 6200? ... just a HD tuner, no DVR) in addition to the box's other merits.
I need to visit Newegg for a HDMI to DVI adapter. My set has only DVI in (with HDCP) and I'm certainly not paying $35 at a local store for a $6 part.

Well, I guess them I'm gonna have to pay the Comcast office over on Miller Rd a visit. I'm always running out of space on the DVR and would like the extra 40 GB of HD space.
Can you check and see what SW/FW the 6416 is running?

I don't think that this is exactly true. For one thing FSD will go on a CONUS beam, and this will probably be on D10. As far as HD LiL for Lansing goes, I'm not really sure, but there is currently plenty of capacity on the Spaceway Birds in orbit now. In fact the Flint market was supposed to go live in the 4th Q of 2006 on one of the Spaceways. This has since been delayed until at least the 3rd Q of this year. I really don't know the reason, but they may want to put it on one of the new sats.

No 6, check this link, good quality cables for very low prices. I got a DVI to HDMI cable for $7.95 including shipping total.

spartan95 02-23-07, 09:44 AM Hello everyone,
I am new to the HDTV community and have several questions. I would appreciate any responses. I just puchased a new HDTV with built in HDTV tuner and am locked into a satellite contract until December with D* (I think I did that right), so I am going to live with no HD programming for awhile. My questions are:
-Can I use my old rooftop directional antenna which has been unhooked for years to receive OTA HDTV?
-If not, which antenna would people suggest I try? Portland is a long way out and to add to the challenge, I live in a one-story home , surrounded by mature trees, down by the river (low) and haven't had very good success getting regular aerial tv coverage over the years with rabbit ears, etc.
Thanks in advance.
Spartan95,
Try your outside antenna, you should be able to get some stations. I would think where you are you may get most of the Grand Rapids stations, and some of the Lansing stations. You can go to this web site, enter your address and see how far away and in what directions all the stations are from your location.
http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx
Most of the digital stations around here are on the UHF band, so rabbit ear antennas don't help. WOTV-DT in G.R. is on channel 7 VHF, and WWMT-DT in Kazoo is on VHF channel 2, but all the others are on UHF. In 2009 WILX-DT plans on going back down to channel 10, but they are on channel 57 right now. Just point your outside antenna in the directions that the "antennaweb" site comes up with for you and do a channel scan and see what your TV can find. Good Luck.
Mark
jefbal99 02-23-07, 12:48 PM I agree with wb8tgy, use the outdoor antenna and it will help and the GR channels should come in better as the towers are closer to ya.
You are going to have to play around with where your antenna is pointing to get the best signal and sometimes you will need to move it for different channels.
Some have reported better signals when adding preamps, others have reported no success or worse. Its a crap shoot, best advice is to hook it up and do a scan.
If you plan on staying with D*, then call them and ask about the 5lnb dish and H20/HR20 receivers. I believe that you fall into the GR DMA so you should be able to get their locals in HD on a spot beam.
I've heard many stories of people bitching enough, they get their hardware upgrades for free.
spartan95 02-24-07, 09:57 AM Thanks for the advice. I'll give it a try.
spotdog14 02-24-07, 10:45 AM Anyone else having issues with the first 202+ HD channels on Comcast? 202-209 say that i am not authorized to view, even though my premium channels come in fine, and the local HD's..... i dont get it, i called and they said that "nothing is wrong"
So what ever... i want to watch College Game Day... damnet its at MSU.

Having the same problem, please bear with this long post.
Called corp tech Fri night, they said my pkg should have those stations and would send out a local tech. Corp Tech also said other techs were getting calls from E.L. with the same problem so local tech would probably not come out, but would fix the problem with the system.
Local tech called on schedule, said I should've never gotten those stations on my plan - Enhanced Cable + HD (upgraded from Expanded Basic in Nov. 2006). Said that newly installed computer allows E.L. to now filter those out so they are no longer available.
Told tech that reps told me in Nov. and last night that ESPN HD and Disc. HD were part of the pkg. In addition, the Comcast web site says they are part of the pkg.
His response, "they are ALL wrong".
Called corp tech on Sat., different tech also said those channels are part of the Enhanced + HD pkg. She said my acct must be messed up and forwarded me to Sales Rep. She said the HD upgrade added HD to the pkg level you had before.
I said, "right !, and ESPN is the 1st station on the Enhanced Basic list, so why don't I get it in HD anymore." She looked at the E.L. Channel Lineup and then recanted her statement and said that you must have Digital Classic + HD to get ESPN HD, Discov HD, etc.
Of course, I called her on completely changing what she said one minute earlier.
Also got her to look at the Comcast web site which says that ESPN and Disc HD are included with HD pkg.
Her response, "well I guess they should change the web site"
My response, "well I guess you, the other reps/techs, and the web site are all doing false and misleading advertising".
She refused to turn ESPN HD back on unless I upgraded to Digital Classic for another $11/mo.
Told her that was unacceptable and asked to speak to a mgr.
She said no mgr was available, but that one would call me back by 5pm.
Mgr never called.
Will take up the battle again Sunday !

WTF so they are just changing the HD package on us now? i was really pissed that i couldnt watch the ESPN broadcast from MSU's campus.
So what is the deal?

What's this? You mean that b!tch with the big fake teeth in the Comcast commercials is lying and there are major problems with Comcast cable?
It's always the same trend with them: one step forward, two steps back.
hd-junkie 02-25-07, 12:49 PM y, I hear ya.
I'm an MSU alum and rabid college basketball fan.
Was not happy about College Game Day in SD.
Went thru another Comcast forum a little while ago.
Seems people all over the country have had the same problem over the last couple of years. Some are getting ESPN/Disc HD on top of the Expanded Basic, but Comcast is telling others that Digital Classic is the minimum pkg on which you can add HD, but after much badgering Comcast sometimes relents and gives them ESPN/Disc HD with Enhanced Cable or a Digital Light pkg for Approx. $5/mo.
A couple of people said that 2006 FCC rules require Comcast to supply the HD equivalents of channels in your pkgs. I know that's true for local broadcasts, but not sure if it applies to premium channels. Also doesn't explain why we don't get Fox HD in E.L. (other than bandwidth issues).
I'm currently able to get more local HD stations (including Fox) than what Comcast offers with a little $20 antennae. In addition, the picture seems more crisp on the antennae. Will probably cancel HD and return the box if I can't get them to turn ESPN HD and Disc HD back on. Also asked the Sales Rep to refund my money yesterday since the product is misrepresented, she also refused to do that.
Seems like a lot of money ($65 - $70 mo.) just to watch ESPN HD and Discovery HD (probably 75% of my TV viewing). Wife watches a little HGTV / TLC and network TV. Also have the Internet Service. Total bill is already over $100 and don't even have any Premium channels.

Seems like a lot of money ($65 - $70 mo.) just to watch ESPN HD and Discovery HD (probably 75% of my TV viewing). Wife watches a little HGTV / TLC and network TV. Also have the Internet Service. Total bill is already over $100 and don't even have any Premium channels.
somthing is really screwed up, because my premium ondemand channels i cannot get either, it says that i am not a subscriber to them, even though i get the damn channels in guide.
Adrian D 02-25-07, 02:17 PM Problems here too.
jefbal99 02-25-07, 02:20 PM Appears that WILX's HD channel is not coming through on Comcast 232. I switched to my OTA antenna and it appears to be fine.
I don't feel like dealing with Comcast today, so I'll just let it go.
As for the issues in the previous few posts regarding ESPN and Discovery HD...
College Gameday is always in SD, so you didn't miss anything.
I've always been told by Comcast that Digital cable subscription of some sort is required to get ESPN HD, DSC, InHD, TNTHD, etc...
Looks like the recent billing upgrades has brought the EL network in alignment with the normal Comcast systems.
I've had no issue with my cable or HD over the last few days.
hd-junkie 02-25-07, 03:08 PM I've always been told by Comcast that Digital cable subscription of some sort is required to get ESPN HD, DSC, InHD, TNTHD, etc...
y, that's in line with what I read on the other forum.
At least 6 people at Comcast since Nov. 2006 have told me that ESPN/Disc HD is part of the HD upgrade (and it was working for almost 4 mos.). Going to a "Digital" plan wasn't necessary. The Comcast web site also says those channels are part of the HD upgrade. They told you something quite a bit different.
So it appears that it is now about $18/mo. to upgrade from Enhanced Basic to HD box and ESPN/Disc/onDemand HD.
Will probably make one more attempt tomorrow to get the HD channels put back on my account w/o paying extra.
Thanks for the info.
spotdog14 02-25-07, 03:41 PM i love how they dont tell us anything, they just cut us off.... WTF comcast....
BTW i was having the problem with WILX as well, and OTA was fine. I love Michigan weather.... i was never able to get WSYM OTA for some reason, but now with the awesome weather i get it!!! lol... funny stuff.

You guys need to print all your documentation of these packages and how Comcast is trying to screw you, then file complaints with the Federal Trade Commission, the consumer affairs division of the state attorney general's office and your local unit of government (which is the franchising authority). Comcast is already on the brink of a class-action suit because they are arbitrarily cancelling Internet subscribers. Seems to me that requiring a subscription upgrade when their advertising says otherwise is definitely an unfair trade practice. I think they might stop if several layers of government start looking them over.

I always assumed Comcast would have an HD tier as well, but when I called to make sure i could get my HD service going, I was told that I already had the HD box (i got it for the dual tuner DVR) and digital cable so I was fine and just needed an HD set to hook it up to.
The only HD that I've seen people get with a QAM tuner and basic or enhanced included the locals and occasionaly a random HD or two. Everything else is encrypted and needs the STB or a cablecard.
If this is being caused by upgrades to the EL network, this is a good thing, hopefully you'll get some more bandwidth and get the channels that have been deployed to the rest of the Lansing network.
spotdog14 02-26-07, 02:30 PM So a little update, i got really pissed off over the weekend because i could not get through on Sunday to anyone... So i sent out a few emails and they totally dismissed any claims that i need "digital classics" and blamed it on my box, and have dispatched a tech to my house for tonight. I am chatting right now with a tech on the comcast website and they said that there is a problem with all HD/DVR box's right now with a driver issue.
Now they are saying that i should have never gotten ESPN, etc, the HD package only includes your locals... WTF is this ****! seriously... they are so confused themselves they don teven know whats goign on.

Alright, a little update to everyone, i got one person at the EL office to confirm that those channels 202-209 were included in the "HD" package until they updated the system and now require you to have the "Digital Classic" service in order to view them. I think this is totally unacceptable, im not really sure of the law, but i will inquire into it (ie: consumer protection laws) to see if they can in fact do this to us. Anyways i have a tech coming out tonight, and if he cannot fix my problem without having to subscribe to the "Digital Classics" than i will, and anyone else that is effected by this file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau.
https://odr.bbb.org/odrweb/public/GetStarted.aspx

I have done a little bit of research over the past few minutes, and according to the Michigan Consumer Protection Laws, Comcast is in violation with its vague guidelines for each channel.
you can read the guidelines here:
http://www.legislature.mi.gov/(S(ame3zgzc34gzmgy4v4vgih55))/mileg.aspx?page=getObject&objectName=mcl-445-903
Also i would recommend filing a complaint with the FTC, as i will after i consult a lawyer. (i love being an intern at a law firm)
If you lookup Comcasts BBB rating, its Unsatisfactory... lol i wounder why.
*Edit*
The tech just called me, and didnt want to come out because he knew what the problem was, and didnt want to have to charge me $20 to visit my house. He said he as been on over 200 calls this weekend on this issue, and says it is a glitch in the software, and Comcast is covering its ass by saying you were never suppose to get those channels. He said the only route is to give Comcast the promo code of P7, and its the "digital classics" for $39.99 (including basic/extended).
Anyways i havent decided if i am going to take this, or go the route of threatening to cancel my service if they dont explain WTF is going on all of a sudden. I spend like $142 a month, i should have some say....

Went to copy the "High Definition Television" pkg description text from the website tonight and it appears to have changed (at least to my recollection) !!
It used to say something like:
"For a few dollars a month more you will enjoy networks like ESPN HD and Discovery HD Theater".
It now says:
"When you subsrcribe to digital you will enjoy networks like ESPN HD and Discovery HD Theater".
Looking at it again and the associated "See All Features" popup.
It appears to be re-written a bit more than that.
The pop-up now clearly states in two places that a "digital subscription" is required to get ESPN HD. When I had the Comcast corp sales rep go over the pkgs on the site with me last wk. It didn't refer to the digital pkg requirement.
Also, that promotional P7 code mentioned in a previous post I think is on the Comcast website, but its for Digital Plus.
Its $39.99 for Digital Plus for 6 mos., then its $66.94 mo. Which doesn't make sense, because Digital Plus is $64.94 / mo. at normal price. Maybe its a typo. Wonder if they'll do that for existing customers ?

i also checked the website, and it has changed. But i have my old brochure that says only a subscription to the available SD channel is required to get the HD channel if offered.
The new one says you have to have a subscription to "digital classics" in order to get the channels. Im going to complain to my local franchising official and see what comes of it, and im also going to write to that John Shcneider (jschneid@lsj.com) to see if he can help us.

Scan2, as you said has the note about a qualifying package. As I posted earlier, I've always been told that Digital Classic is a minimum to get the encrypted HD channels.

the way it was always explained to me was that if you got the channels in SD in your package, then you could get them in HD.
Anyways after spending i would say a good 20+ hours on the phone over the past 5 days and 4 hours at the EL and miller road Comcast offices that after my "promo" period runs out i will never be a Comcast customer ever again. I was accused of stealing cable twice, and not treated even closely to professionally on several occasions.
I went to the Miller Road office to get everything sorted out, and talk with a supervisor, and come to find out they dont have one, and ended up totally screwing up my account. I come home to find out that i dont have any service at all, and i call Comcast up to find out all i am being charged for now is the digital outlet charge of $20 or something and i have no other services, but am being billed $142.87 for something.
Its just amazing that they can be so screwed up. I will be so pleased when i will never have to deal with Comcast again. Like i said after the promo period runs out, i will just use my damn antenna and steal internet. So much easier. And because of my horrible treatment i will be filing charges with the FTC, the AG's office and my local franchising office.

That is not the case in almost all Comcast markets. It appears that the Lnasing markets is coming into line with the national standards.

lol yes true, and i understand that, it was the part where they just cut everyone off and never told us anything and then accused people like myself of stealing cable.
i was just being sarcastic about stealing cable. Im in the market for a house, and one of the deciding factors just might be if it is in a Comcast area of not, this is of course if i get a house before AT&T rolls in.
jefbal99 02-28-07, 02:28 PM That is not the case in almost all Comcast markets. It appears that the Lnasing markets is coming into line with the national standards.
The lansing market has been in line with the national setup for quite some time. This network that he is on is the old TCI East Lansing network that Comcast never merged into the "Lansing Network." They have a slightly different channel lineup and services than the Lansing Network.
I agree with homcom, that its just the natural progression of Comcast assimilating the system. As I posted earlier, I believe that this is a very good thing for EL. The fact that Comcast is starting to upgrade the network means more bandwidth and more services that have been deployed to Lansing (WSYM, VSGLF, FSN HD, MHD, etc). Possibly even a network merger?
It appears that EL was like a lot of the old Adelphia systems that got transitioned to Comcast, they went through many changes because their provider changed and the network setup changed. Same thing here, just delayed. Comcast bought TCI ages ago, but they never did any work to the network, so it stayed a piece of crap, but you got a few HDs for free. Now that upgrades are coming in and the system is being brought in line with a "typical" Comcast network, some changes will occur. I would make a guess that Comcast just never installed any encryption on the head end so the HDs weren't encrypted.
the way it was always explained to me was that if you got the channels in SD in your package, then you could get them in HD.
did a CSR or a tech explain this to you? if it was a CSR, well, they never have a clue about what they are saying, so thats no good. If a tech told you that, then it may have been somebody that knew how the network was setup and that you didn't need the higher level subscriptions.
When I first saw the scans you posted, my first thought was that if HD showed up working on my system and I hadn't changed anything, then I would assume that I got it for having the SD subscription. Your best chance to prove anything would be if you had, in writing from a Comcast employee, that you got HD service for having the SC Service.
As previously stated, Even time I've spoke with a CSR, Account Exec, Tech, Senior tech, CSM (Customer service manager), Email support, etc; it has always been communicated that a digital cable subscription of some sort was needed to get the encrypted HD channels.
Anyways after spending i would say a good 20+ hours on the phone over the past 5 days and 4 hours at the EL and miller road Comcast offices that after my "promo" period runs out i will never be a Comcast customer ever again. You had a very bad experience here and that is unfortunate. I had a few issues with the CSRs I spoke with during the Billing system upgrade and when VSGLF and FSN HD were to be deployed. I started using the email support and wouldn't take no for an answer. It took about 10 days of back and forth emails, but finally a manager called me and we talked for a good hour regarding not only the upgrades, but the poor level of service I had received. I ended up with 5-6 weeks worth of free cable for my troubles.
I've never assumed that Comcast owed me anything, I've made many requests to them, but I have a few choices in my video services and if Comcast ever pissed me off enough, I'd just change. There is nothing that can be done to change what has been done. It sounds like you've made your choice and that is your prerogative.
Having dealt with Comcast for so long, I know that to really get anything done, it takes atleast 4-5 calls/emails and I am prepared for that.

Do you know where the main office your service comes from?
Could be an issue where the systems in that office need upgrades or that the bandwidth available just can't handle the OnDemand needs.
Your best bet is to talk to people in the local office rather than calling the 800 number.
jefbal99 03-01-07, 05:11 PM Dish Network has moved some HD channel assignments (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=813208), has this shown up to any of the E* subs in the area with the 211 hardware?
When/if it does, please PM me the new channel numbers and I'll update the 1st post.
hd-junkie 03-01-07, 07:33 PM Just got my bill for Mar 07 (East Lansing).
Great new billing system.
Apparently to make up for the nuisance of changing my account number, Comcast graciously lowered my bill approx. $30.
Talked to friend in Okemos area, same for him, says his friend in Grand Ledge also has the lower bill.
It looks like instead of putting HSI into the new billing system as:
$57.95 - $15 discount (for cable TV).
They just put in a positive $15 on the bill for HSI - sweet ...
Or maybe its to compete with DSL ??
Anyone know ?
The bill also listed price increases coming your way Apr 07.
The HD box is going up $2 to $7/mo. and all pkgs are going up $2.
So if you've got HD, your next bill will be $4 higher for Apr 07.

spotdog14,
Thanks for "taking the arrows" on Comcast E.L. dropping the ESPN/Disc. HD channels. Since I work at home developing web apps and administer over 10 remote web servers, didn't want to chance getting my HSI messed up over a couple of cable channels. Also have real-time stock software hooked up for swing trading.
Certainly get my $ worth out of HSI. Have had very few problems with it over the years.
I agree with jefbal99 and homcom, Comcast is bringing the E.L. area in line with what they've been doing in all areas of the country.
Too bad they couldn't have found a more graceful way to do it.
I'll probably just take the path of least resistance and pay the extra $10/mo for Digital Classic and be done with it.
Got a bad case of the shakes watching Duke/Maryland last night in SD.
Ready to go around the neighborhood with sign - "Will work for HD".
Can I shovel your driveway or mow your lawn to watch a college bball game in HD ?

Make sure hdj has to bring the beer & brats during CFB season, too.
The sanctity of my couch during CFB season might also be violated. I was the first among my friends and family to get an HDTV. Now that most of them have seen mine, or have seen one elsewhere, I have a whole lot of people that want to be at my place for major sporting events.
Anybody on here use Millennium as their cable provider? I'm not going to get the Sunday Ticket this upcoming year, so I'm thinking of switching to cable. Millennium is the only choice in Mason.
Their channel lineup (http://www.mdm.net/lineup/10%20Mason%20LINEUP%20INS.pdf) shows that they have all of the local HD channels. They also have an HD DVR. My original HD box (Hughes E86) is starting to go. DirecTV gave me the run around when trying to get a new box. If I can get similar service from Millennium, I'll switch.
jefbal99 03-04-07, 08:49 PM according to their list, all the digital subs are HD and apparently WLNS has a digital sub that no one knows about ;)
Is this the line up for Dimondale and other areas served by Millennium? If it is, then I'll update the 1st post

It looks like it's the same for the others as well. WLNS has used a subchannel that has been rarely used. My guess is that they've just assigned it a channel instead of having to worry about it. I think that it was used before during March Madness.

I'm in the same boat. I have D*, and MDM is the cable option. Based on my experience with MDM, I would not go with them. They are technically very far behind. I had both TV and internet from them, and they both had frequent outages. The (Non-Digital) picture is horrendous. When I dropped them, they did not have an HD DVR. For my money, I'm sticking with D*, and hoping that the new sats are up soon with plenty of HD content.

jefbal99 03-07-07, 07:13 AM Got a message on the STB last night that effective 4/3/07 Lansing will be getting National Geographic HD (199), A&E HD (200), and Universal HD (208).
The lineup will now be equal to Detroit's except that our local CW and MyNetworkTV stations are not available in HD. It also matches the known list of channels that Comcast has carriage agreements with. Only thing that some markets have that we will be missing are HD PPV and HD Special Events Channel.
Kickass!!!

Hey the upgrades on EL have started (unfortunately, you found out by losing some of your HD channels) hopefully soon you'll get some more bandwidth and get up to date with the rest of the area.
Gabe2006 03-07-07, 06:31 PM Confirm New Channels on Lansing network:
"We are happy to announce 3 more HD channels: A&E HD on 200, National Geographic HD on 199 and Universal HD on 208 effective 4/3/07."
My prayers have been answered. :) Makes me feel a bit better. The Comcast HSI connection was breaking up almost every day for a week and I almost cancelled the service. I guess they were doing some upgrades.
jefbal99 03-07-07, 10:13 PM After the fiacso with so many people in Lansing and GR being told that the last STB message (VSGLF and FSN HD) was sent out incorrectly and that their were no plans to add those channels, I emailed Customer service today to ensure that engineering, customer service, and marketing were all on the same page about this roll out. Hopefully we don't have any issues like in February.
I updated the first post with these new channels for the line up. I'm also working on a list for the MDM addition, however, I don't have access to a channel guide yet to get their listings. I'll be at my Uncles house in a few days and get it.
cheers!
SMWinnie 03-08-07, 02:48 PM edited...the upgrades on EL have started...Are we certain that Comcast is upgrading the old 550MHz East Lansing TCI infrastructure?
I haven't heard anything from Comcast and the thread here seems to indicate nothing more than a revision in the billing software at the business office.

Steve Burke of Comcast said in an interview last fall that all networks would be upgraded to atleast 750Mhz
jefbal99 03-08-07, 09:24 PM I don't think that this is exactly true.
I don't believe any of the HD RSNs are on CONUS beams, they are all on Spot Beams to the individual region. Also, Ken H's magic 8 ball just posted yesterday about D* doing compression on the Spot Beams, so I think they are having issues with the Spot Beam mpeg4 encoders. D* is having issues on the LiLs.

The regional HD feeds would be spots except for one featured national HD game each night/at a time if my guess is correct. Some of the pressure for HD space is relieved when national channels pick games up, such as Thursday nights when HD Net broadcasts an exclusive NHL HD broadcast and D* can broadcast NBA games in HD.
cornell_lingus 03-10-07, 01:37 PM Has anybody heard who has the CCHA contract for next season? I'm wondering if the new Big Ten Network might try for it or whether they will be picked up by Fox Sports Detroit again. Doesn't seem like FSD broadcast as many CCHA games this year as last.
cornell_lingus 03-10-07, 01:39 PM Does anybody know whether D* (and other providers for that matter) will make the new Big Ten Network part of the basic package or will we have to pay extra to subscribe to that network (or to it as part of the RSN package)?

Big Ten Network will be part of D* Total Choice package or whatever they are calling it now.
The BTN has said it wants to be on basic cable in the midwest and digital throughtout the country.
jefbal99 03-11-07, 12:40 PM Wings and Bruins are finally up in HD on WILX, started out with the Rangers broadcast, then the Wings in SD for the first 3 mins of the game.
Looks much nicer that the HD feed is coming through
jefbal99 03-11-07, 02:15 PM WLNS isn't showing the SEC title game in HD, called the newsroom, got it switched on
spotdog14 03-14-07, 03:30 PM can someone explain something to me real quick? As you may know i have Comcast... and now have digital what ever package. Why is it that channel 177 looks so much better than 62? (they are both the history channel).
Actually why is it that 99 and below look like crap when compared to anything over 99? Is it because they are digital channels?
jefbal99 03-14-07, 04:57 PM I questioned WLNS about the NCAA coverage and this is what i got back...
Dear Jeff,
Here is the message from CBS:Please note that your SD and HD channels
should match at all times. This year you do not have the option of
airing a different game on your HD channel. For the week of March 12,
if you are ASSIGNED to be a CONSTANT station for any of the games, you
must upconvert your SD feed of that game to broadcast on your HD channel
in order for your SD and HD channels to mirror one another. As noted
above, the HD feed will be the Flex feed; we will not be able to provide
you with a CONSTANT HD feed. WLNS will be a CONSTANT station for the
Michigan State Game. You may contact CBS at audsvcs@cbs.com.
Thank you for your interest in WLNS TV-6.
Regards,
Teresa Morton
Program Director
WLNS-Lansing
We are getting screwed because we live in an area with a game of interest. CBS is seriously dropping the ball here, what a freaking crock. I will be emailing CBS and voicing my displeasure.

In Lansing, 177 is not in the channel guide, I don't see a 2nd History channel in the line up.

humm, that is strange. I have noticed that we have a few duplicate channels in the EL lineup. Maybe you could field a guess as to why the higher channel looks better, is it because it is "digital" where as the other channel is just regular SD cable?

It very well could be a digital vs. analog issue, but i honestly have no clue. Is this constant on all TVs? HD and SD? I have some channels that look much better is SD on my old 27" Sharp than my 42" DLP.
There could be more bandwidth allocated to the digital channels than the analog channels.
The only channels I noticed that I had a duplicate of is NFL Network on 180 and 275, but 275 is for when it moves to the Sports Pack.

to tell you the truth i cannot tell the difference between the analog and digital most of the time on my SD tv's (but sometimes i can really tell on Spike when watching Star Trek, it looks like crap even on my SD tv). But i can defiantly tell the difference on my 32inch LCD HDTV between any channel higher than 99 and any channel lower than 99.
So i guess that kinda answers my question, it must be analog vs. digital.

It sounds like a analog vs. digital to me. How are you receiving the signal on each of your tvs, through a STB or directly into your TV. Is ADS fully in place on your system? If ADS in place you should be seeing all channels as digital with a STB.
Another possible quality issue with the analog channels is the format conversions they go through. For cable channels they come into the plant digitally they are just converted to analog but the local stations and other cable channels that come in as analog are converted to digital then back to analog.
The only channels I noticed that I had a duplicate of is NFL Network on 180 and 275, but 275 is for when it moves to the Sports Pack.
The picture quality should be exactly the same on bother channel numbers here, as both should be using the same QAM feed.

That sucks. Last year's tournament was the first big event I had HDTV for and it was so cool to have the separate SD and HD games. I guess CBS will have to be dragged kicking and screaming into the HD era the same way they were with color TV 40 years ago.

Kinda hard to believe that statement considering the number of firsts that CBS has in the HD world, not too mention the number of years they have been at it.

I never inferred that the quality was any different, just that the only channel that is twice is in the lineup is NFL Network. I assumed when listing the channel numbers that everyone would know both are digital.

It's not showing on screen. The NCAA tourney is one of their marquee events yet only select games will be HD and they expect their stations to upconvert SD games for their geographical region. And how about their NFL coverage, where most of their games were not HD? Even when they did broadcast in HD there were big technical problems. And what about all the golf they do not broadcast in HD?

ALL NCAA games are being produced in HD. The great majority of viewers will see the game they want to see in HD. If the local stations wanted to step up to the plate they could show a majority of constant feed games in HD as well.
CBS was the first in HD with the NFL back in the late 1990s way before anyone else was even thinking about HD sports. More HD NFL games are on the way for the next season.
ALL PGA golf events on CBS are in total HD this year, something no other network has done in the past or is doing right now.
jefbal99 03-15-07, 07:34 PM Well, i'm gonna eat some crow, props to WLNS for showing the HD flex feed of MSU vs. Marquette.
jefbal99 03-15-07, 08:40 PM CBS just "flexed" to the Duke vs. VCU game and CBS immediately went to commercial. MSU is handling Marquette quite well, so I hope we stick with the Duke game for awhile.
And as I type, WLNS switched to the constant SD feed of the MSU game.
They gave us as much HD as they could so far so I do take my hat off to them and I'll be sending a nice email to the Program Manager at WLNS thanking them for the decision to stay with the HD coverage as long as they could.

Am I missing something here? The upconverted SD doesn't look as horrible as the regular stuff, but thanking them for giving us only half a game in HD? Is there some reason I'm not seeing that they couldn't have shown the whole thing in HD?

whats the story here? i called wlns midway through the game to find out whats up. the girl says cbs wasn`t supposed to be broadcasting in hd but for some reason they were so wlns let the game go through in hd till cbs cut the signal. i guess i don`t get this. how many games are they going to do in hd (cbs)? am i going to be thoroughly ticked off now because i was expecting every game to be in hd. why wouldn`t cbs want all these games to be sent in hd? i don`t get it.
jefbal99 03-15-07, 10:22 PM OK, here's the deal...
CBS is producing all games in HD, however, affiliates have the option of a constant feed for a game (meaning it will only be that game and not bounce around except for look ins) or being on a flex feed. Only the flex feeds carry HD full time, while the constant feeds are SD. WLNS was on the flex feed of the MSU game until CBS decided to flex to the Duke game because it was close. At that time, WLNS switched over to the constant feed in SD.
Only MSU games are constant for WLNS, everything else we see will be full time HD, but CBS can flex us around to random games.
The bitch in the newsroom had no clue what she was talking about. I tried to walk her through the flex feed vs. constant feed to get WLNS back in HD after the MSU game got over with, but she just kept repeating the same line "The network is no longer sending us an HD feed."
She wouldn't even attempt to listen, I tried to get transfered to the guys in Master Control, but she was a broken record.
I salute WLNS for giving us the HD that they could.

I understand what you're saying, but why on God's green Earth would they not want to broadcast the constant feeds in HD? And wouldn't there be large amounts of people in major markets that would be pissed that the constant feed for their home team isn't HD? That makes no sense to me.

CBS currently lacks the bandwidth to send out all the constant feeds in HD, hence only the flex feeds are in HD. Next year, once their production facility is rebuilt, I assume all feeds, constant and flex will be in HD.

Pure numbers. More markets see games on flex feeds rather then constant feeds. They are trying to provide HD to as many people as possible at all times.
jefbal99 03-16-07, 10:15 PM Pistons are live vs. Phoenix on InHD/NBAtv HD 206. Its the FSN Arizona feed and its not blacked out because the game is being shown on MyNetwork TV, not FSN Detroit.
Good alternate if the NCAA games turn into all blow outs.
heed316 03-16-07, 10:27 PM I got a question, I pick up the video broadcast of TNTHD on my qam tuner from my TV on channel 110-1 but I get no audio at all. Is there anyway to get the audio, or am I just sol on that station?

The game should be blackedout for everyone in the Detroit Pistons viewing area. It makes no difference whether the game is shown on FSND or OTA from the Pistons Television Network. Consider yourself lucky this is just a mistake somewhere between Comcast and NBA TV.

Its been a constant mistake all season. If the Pistons are on FSN, its blacked out, if they are on OTA, then i've gotten it. I consider myself very lucky, before I got FSN HD, it was my only source of Pistons in HD besides the crap that TNT puts out.
I emailed the local MyNetworkTV Affiliate that shows the Pistons, asking if they had any plans to go HD, I never got a response.
jefbal99 03-19-07, 12:02 PM I just want to pass out mad props to WLNS for their NCAA Tourney coverage over the 4 day window of the 1st and 2nd round. It was great to see someone actually watching the feeds and bouncing us to HD signals whenever available. Only SD that we saw was the 2nd half of the MSU game on Thursday and the first few mins of the MSU game on Saturday. Saturday was great, because CBS was jumping to the end of a very tight game during the first few mins of the MSU game and within seconds, it was back to HD.
I'll be emailing them again a Thank you because it shows that they care about their viewers experience and listen to viewers feedback.

I was having horrible problems early in the hockey game. Switched over to 47.1 for the NASCAR Bristol race and forgot all about turning back to NBC.
LansingHD 03-26-07, 02:39 AM Same here. Hockey game was a nightmare. Problem continued after that on 10-1 and was still evident when I left the house at 9pm. Hopefully, it's just one of those days & not an ongoing problem.

I watched the game via Comcast and while it didn't start out in HD, the HD feed came on after 2-3 mins. I was bouncing between all the sports on, but watched a good chunk of the hockey game and it was crisp and clean. I didn't bust out the antenna cause i never checked this forum to see if there were any issues.

It doesn't say Scrambled Video like other channels that don't come in, it's just black. I wanted to see the Red Wings game in HD, but the channel is nowhere to be found now...
Comcast could have moved it to a different location, have you tried a rescan?
With UHD, NGCHD, and AE HD coming in the next 8 days, could be that stuff is getting moved around to make room.
If it was moved, it could be at an odd frequency that your QAM tuner just can't pick up. I've seen issues in other threads where QAM channels get moved into the 120s and a persons tuner will only go to 99 or 115.
I've never dealt with QAM, but could have gotten encrypted and you tv may just show a blank screen instead of a channel place and message.
Wings are on VSHD, Pistons are on FSNHD and NBAtv HD, however, NBAtv HD on InHD is getting blacked out.
Good HD sporting evening for Michigan.
Odd question, anybody know if the ESPN networks will be doing the Frozen Four in HD this year? I'm gonna be in Columbus during the finals and want to record them on the DVR.
Odd question, anybody know if the ESPN networks will be doing the Frozen Four in HD this year? I'm gonna be in Columbus during the finals and want to record them on the DVR.
Last time I looked it was not on the schedule as being in HD, I highly doubt that it got added.
I'm in Lansing, and have noticed over the past couple of weeks that my HD channels, especially when watching sports on the network channels, are really "jittery", meaning it looks like its dropping frames of the picture, though the audio is working fine.
Is this happening to anyone else? The comcast guy said they were doing work on their network which might be why, but its gotten beyond annoying at this point and I'd suspect there's something else wrong. But I thought I'd check on here to see if its happening to anyone else, or if anyone knows what it could be?
Thanks

I'm pretty sure ESPN2 has the Frozen Four in two weeks.

My buddy at work has complained of the same prob with his Comcast HD. He is very annoyed at this point as well & was going to call Comcast today. I will see him tomorrow & let you know what he was told.
On a completly different note, I currently get all locals in Lansing on an OTA antenna (I have Dish Net & they do not offer Lansing HD locals at this time). Has anyone here had any success changing their local channels on Dish to Detroit, GR, etc? And if so, how did you go about it. No offense to the local affiliates, but they're all lame! And it just so happens I work at one of these lame affiliates! I have posed this question on other forums with no success. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have no issues, other areas have reported similar issues and if you go into the Motorola box setup and change the default resolution a few times, it seems to clear it up. I'll see if I can find the exact instructions.

I've heard of people doing this with D*, but not E*. I wouldn't see why it wouldn't work. If you have online bill pay, no paper bill being sent out, and a family member or friend in the Detroit area whose address you can use. Just call Dish, tell them you've moved, they will prolly push you to let them setup and install your dish, just fight them on that.
spotdog14 03-27-07, 01:43 PM Can someone answer me why Channel 6 has the times all messed up on its 11 o'clock news broadcasts? I notice this all the time when i sit down to watch channel 6 news to not have it on. Last night was the first night that i actually remembered what day it was on. The guide from Comcast and OTA said that 11 o'clock news should start at 11, but it didnt, the previous show was still showing.
It really its upsetting im getting into the habit now of just watching channel 10 news, can anyone explain to me why the mess this up?

If you are talking about Sunday night CBS NCAA basketball ran over. CBS never preempts 60 minutes so the whole network was running 38 minutes behind schedule through prime time. The news should have started at 11:38.

Try powering off the DVR and pressing menu on the remote. Change the 4:3 override to either 480i or 480p and press menu again, then power the DVR back on. Having it set to None or Stretch can cause the stuttering issue you are speaking of. I'm not sure why, but it is a problem with the hardware. I had the same problem on my Cox DVR, which was more or less the same box.
cornell_lingus 04-01-07, 01:34 PM Is anybody else having the same problems with dropouts on 10.1 this week as last week? I'm trying to watch the Red Wings-Blue Jackets game and it's dropping out half the time.

You guys watching OTA?
On Comcast, I watched half the game (power outage on the West Side of Town) and didn't notice anything. Watched a bit of the golf match during the race and didn't have any issues.

heed316 04-02-07, 08:49 PM I just did a rescan on my tv here. The TV picked up a channel(73-1) called Channel One. From what I hear that's the VOD channel for Comcast now? Thing is, we don't get On Demand out here where I live. Is this just a weird coincidence that I got this channel, or does this mean VOD is on the way for us? I just checked the TV that has a box and the On Demand still doesn't work there. Any ideas on what this means...?

Comcast CSRs don't have a clue, glad its working for you now.
Has anybody seen UHD, A&E HD, or NGC HD show up in the channel guide yet? I checked at 6:30am today and there was nothing updated. I'm in the office until 3pm ish, so I wn't get to check again for a good while.
Hoping I don't have to get into it with Comcast again over a channel addition.

Im not holding my breath, i have a felling ill be ditching Comcast this month.

That really blows, please keep us appraised of what is occurring and if you do leave Comcast, hopefully U-Verse comes to your area soon as a new choice in video provider.
jefbal99 04-03-07, 11:27 AM Just had the wife check when she got home and its confirmed!!!
A&E HD, NCGHD, and UHD are in the guide and live!!!
I'm honestly shocked...
This is the first rollout since I've got digital cable a few years ago that has gone cleanly and on time. Every add in the last few years ends up delayed (VSGLF & FSNHD) or just shows up out of nowhere (WLAJ HD) with a STB message a few days later.
Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come from Comcast...

Well he called me back about 5 hours later and told me that i had a balance of $63.20 on my account, and he does not know how i got a bill for ~$200. But he said that all i had to pay this month was $63.20....
I have no idea WTF is going on with comcast. It is a never ending battle with them, i suppose my bill next month will either be free or $263.20. Im going to get annoyed really fast if i have to call each month to straighten out my bill.

jefbal99 04-05-07, 04:22 PM Arialink is the first telephone company in Lansing to step up and apply for a video franchise since the election last fall.
Telecommunications company Arialink is looking to get into the cable television business.
The Lansing-based company has applied for a cable TV franchise in its home city. That makes it the first telecom company in Lansing - and one of the first in Michigan - to take advantage of new statewide cable franchise rules.
The Lansing City Council is expected to approve the franchise at a special meeting today.

Nothing about HDTV in the article, but I have to assume that they will be pushing HD and lower costs.
Be very interesting to see what their TV line up will be and what kind of packaging they will do with voice and data services.
Arialink stated in the article that they will offer service to everyone in Lansing.
Also will be interesting to see what Comcast does in the next 18 months as Arialink does its upgrades and begins rolling out services.
Edit in:
Found on the Arialink website that they are already offering TV services to many apartment complexes and Fiber to the Home in Hawk Hollow in Bath.

After reading on boards for other markets I think you're going to find several oddball channels off Comcast QAM. Seems like there is definitely a system within a system there. Enjoy them while they're there. If we don't say much and the unwashed masses don't find out, maybe they won't do anything about the extras.

I checked InDemand's site for NBA league pass, but they had no HD games last night. I was hoping that HDPPV or GameHD might get added soon.

MHD
WLAJ (53)
WILX (10)
WLNS (6)

I've seen a few decent concerts on MHD, just needs more content and less reruns. InHD sucks if the MLB doesn't come back to it. Its nice for a few extra NBA HD games each week.
I love having NGC HD, great stuff there and Universal has some decent shows. VSGLF is great for NHL, Bull Riding, and Golf Coverage. Been loving playoff hockey in HD almost every evening for the last week. Hockey is on InHD Thursday and Friday when VSGLF shows golf coverage.
FSN Detroit is amazing for Tigers and Red WIngs. The Pistons coverage is OK, but no where near the hockey and baseball coverage. Just wish we had more games in HD and definitely more road games in HD.
jefbal99 04-18-07, 07:22 AM Damn, I got all excited this morning cause the little red light was on my cable box. I was hoping for something new being added, but alas, it was just an add for Comcast Digital Voice.

cornell_lingus 04-23-07, 10:37 AM I see D* has been throwing some extra programming on channels 93 and 94 in our area when they have a lot of games to show at the same time. I've seen some of the Versus HD coverage pop up on channel 94 quite often at busy times.
heed316 04-23-07, 04:25 PM Has anyone else that uses a QAM tuner recently had a bunch of their channels they used to get go encrypted. In the past week, I've lost:

-Jetix
-Nick
-TLC
-CSPAN
-CSPAN2
-CNN
-ESPN
-ESPN2
-FSN
-Versus

-FX
-TNT
Every few days theres something else that I lose. This is quite dissapointing as the main reason I had for getting the QAM tuner was getting these channels, along with the HD. Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to get these channels back? I've pretty much lost every sports station now, unless I go back to the analog channels.
heed316 04-23-07, 05:59 PM Argh, after trying to get them to add the channels back or at least get an explanation as to why they are suddenly going encryption crazy on me, all I'm getting is some generic statements about how I have to have a box and that channels above 99 aren't available to TVs without boxes. CSRs have no clue regarding QAM and channels in the clear vs. encryption. They are paid to try and sell you cable boxes. They are as equally clueless about CableCards.
It doesn't shock me that Comcast is beginning to encrypt everything, however it is disappointing.

Call wilx when they forget to hit the switch. On their website, call the newsroom and ask for master control or have them check with master control. its usually fixed within seconds
I'm still pissed about the Wings not being shown live in HD last night. Versus picks that as an exclusive game and then only shows the game on InHD at midnight, tape delayed.

Yeah, I turned on the Wings expecting HD but nope! Crappy SD. Why does the rest of the country get to see the game in HD but not us? Makes no sense whatsoever. And thanks for the tip on WILX. Next time I'll give them a call.
SMWinnie 04-27-07, 04:19 PM Multichannel News reports (http://www.multichannel.com/article/CA6437139.html?rssid=196) that Motorola plans to demo a STB with integrated ATSC OTA tuner in a couple of weeks.
Just musing here. Aside from the obvious leverage such a box would give the MSOs in negotiating carriage with the broadcasters, do you suppose OTA is robust enough for the MSOs to rely on it for HD carriage of the locals?
(By "robust" I mostly mean "works fine with a Silver Sensor," because I can't imagine Comcast rolling trucks full of ChannelMaster antenna rotors...)
spotdog14 04-28-07, 11:27 AM have you guys actually dug through the On Demand menu? I was really bored last night and was looking through it, besides the fact that they have music videos on demand, they also have on demand dating, come on WTF! It was so funny when i found it!!! They have some really strange stuff, and in my opinion a lot of useless stuff that they could be putting more free HD content.
Also i see that they fixed the problem where you co go to HD on demand, then to network shows and it would not show Jericho. But if you went to network shows, CBS, Jericho it was in HD, now you can get to the HD in both options.

WILX is the OTA broadcast partner of the Tigers for Lansing. None of the OTA games will be in HD, they are on Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons. Line up is available for the Fox Sports Detroit website (http://msn.foxsports.com/id/6631426). Some games will show on 10.2 (249 for comcast subs) because of the US Open or other events that require the national tv audience.
Sucks, but it wasn't the Wings so I wasn't too unhappy (also I was on the golf course/camping, but would have liked to catch the end of the hockey game when I got home.)
Go Wings, FSN HD tonight 9pm
heed316 05-07-07, 12:54 PM I was saying they could of left the tigers game on the normal broadcast channel, but put the hockey game on the HD channel. What was the point of having both channels sending the same broadcast when they aren't showing something that they should be showing. I wanted to watch the Tigers and the hockey game. I still got to though as I get WDIV on qam, but still it would have been nice to have the game in HD. You can bet that this would NEVER EVER happen in any other sports playoffs. Can you imagine if they didn't show a football playoff game in favor of a regular season Red Wings game? Just wouldn't happen.

I agree and I think the Tigers game should have been on 10.2 as they will do with a few games later in the year, but they want maximum exposure. I've only seen a few times with WLNS where they do a different feed on the HD channel. Thats during the tennis US Open and the Jerry Lewis telethon Labor Day weekend.
If it was a Red Wings game, then I'm sure that the Tigers game would have been moved.
Edit in:
Found the WILX schedule (http://www.wilx.com/sports/headlines/6754812.html), if you notice the past two weekends and next weekend, the games are listed as possibly showing on 10.2. That has to be there incase the Red Wings had a playoff game.
The date with the # that says will be on 10.2 is the weekend of the US Open golf tournament and NBC has the broadcast rights for that.

It's a brave new world in broadcasting. Likely someone forgot to flip a switch one way or the other. I'm sure it won't be the last time as more and more broadcasts mull their multicast options.

I sent the following email to Gary King at WILX, awaiting a reply...
Gary,
Is it at all possible to keep the NBC National HD feed going on 10.1
while the analog feed of channel 10 gets the Tigers games.
I ran across quite a few people on Sunday and Monday that were miffed
that the NHL game was preempted. I could understand using the HD
channel for the Tigers if they were in HD, but when NBC has a national
sports broadcast, especially a playoff game, it would be nice to have
the choice. Cable and OTA offer both the digital and analog channel,
so it would be up to the viewer to choose. Perhaps run a crawl once
an hour on both channels (I know that the NBC feed would have to e
dropped into SD) that either game is available and what feed is
needed.
I notice in your schedule that a couple of Tigers games will be on
10.2. One is because of the PGA US Open and it appears another will
be depending on how long the Red Wings playoff series goes with the
Ducks.
Is this something that is a possibility?
Thanks

It seems to me that broadcasters should be doing more to publicize the coming DTV transition and their multicast options. Having the Wings in HD on 10.1 and the Tigers in SD on 10.2 seems to me a perfect way to alert people to digital TV. Folks tune most PSA's out, but attach the same info to a sports commercial and it will get noticed.
My father started catching on to what was coming and told me to start watching prices for used ATSC tuners on Ebay.

Jeff,
These decisions are made by management above me. We do have the capability
to do as you are requesting and I believe that is what they are intending to
do in the future. I will pass this suggestion along to the powers that be.

Jeff, you ought to invite Gary to check the board out here. He doesn't need to participate but he might get some good feedback. Then again he could get depressed, too.
cornell_lingus 05-10-07, 08:25 PM At least they aren't pretending and putting an SD broadcast on an HD channel. One more month (he said brimming with hope) until the new bird launches.

I sent him the link and he replied he spent 30 mins reading the board. Hopefully he'll lerk around and if we have some constructive ideas. maybe they will get passed up the chain at WILX.
Random question, does anybody have a number for engineering/mastercontrol for WSYM? WILX produces their newscasts now and their news line goes to the studio on the southside of town. I don't usually run into broadcast issues from wsym, but it happens occasionally.

Where are you located and what model STB do you have?
What is the latest estimate of locals in HD on D* in Lansing? Thanks
twaller 05-14-07, 09:05 AM It most likely will not be before D* launches the new Sats. Best guess would be sometime in 2008.

Thats strange, I live on the west side of town with a 6200 and a 6412, MHD has never disappeared. Only thing that I can think would be that your STB needed to be hit by a signal from the head end.
On a different note, per the NY courts ruling that Comcast could put the NFL Network on the Sports and Entertainment tier, I got the red dot this morning that told me it would be moving.
I wonder what this will do for the NFL Network HD coverage that was previously shown on InHD (now Mojo HD)?
cornell_lingus 05-22-07, 12:47 AM Good job Sunday. WILX-DT 1 and 2 were good for sports fans with DTV knowledge. I still say sales and advertising missed some good opportunities to spread the word about channel 10.2. Engineering did their job well, though.

TTRider 06-04-07, 09:52 PM Has anyone else noticed a change in the menu system for Comcast’s DVR here in the Lansing area? It used to be that when the Menu button was pressed, one of the icons displayed was labeled DVR. If the DVR icon was invoked, a menu of DVR options appeared including the ability to go to your recorded programs or to view your currently scheduled programs. From the scheduled programs selection, you could change series recording options among other things.
That DVR icon has now disappeared. The only way I can find to get to our recorded programs is to press My DVR button on the remote. But that only brings up the list of recorded programs, not the option to review scheduled programs.
I called Comcast and they blasted our box with a reset but that didn’t change anything. Are we missing something or are others seeing the same thing?

jefbal99 06-05-07, 04:10 PM I'm in Lansing township on the westside of town and when I hit menu, I still have the DVR option between the "Heart" and "HD." It takes me to the same place that the My DVR button on the remote does.
Check your Software and Firmware versions. Perhaps an update went out for the Moto boxes
Noticed a new channel in the lineup...
Channel 210 HDOD HD On Demand. Just a link to the OnDemand guide, same and entering channel 1 or hitting the ON DEMAND button on the remote.
I'll update the channel listing in the first post.
Ran into an issue yesterday with Universal HD having not audio on either my DVR or regular HD box. Didn't feel like arguing with Comcast, so I jsut watched other TV. Its back to normal this afternoon.
jefbal99 06-05-07, 04:15 PM Appears that Comcast also added other OnDemand links:
166 FEAR FEARnet On Demand
299 HBOOD HBO On Demand
366 MOD Movies On Demand
These actually take you to the FEARnet, HBO, and Movies section of On Demand.

+1. East Lansing.Update: I went home for lunch to have a sandwich and call Comcast. If you're going to call Comcast, you might as well do it with a soda and a ham-n-cheese.
Like all plans, this one had a flaw. The problem seems to have gone away all by itself, along with a software bump (like 73.44 to 74.53-3321) and firmware bump (like 12.27 to 16.36).

Yep, after calling Comcast twice, they decided to send a tech out. The tech walked in the door, I turned on the set to demonstrate the issue and the menu was back to normal. Tech said he had seen this several times in the past several days. Seems Comcast is doing some playing around.
jefbal99 06-06-07, 06:08 PM We finally got the software update, AWESOME!!!!

maggiefan 06-06-07, 09:47 PM Just checked, got the new sw/fw too. Now when I press "favorites", I get a screen that says "list 1". It seems that you can have more than one favorites list. I'm not a basketball fan but I did see that. I noticed there were several big-time flickers through the SD signal after that change as well. That made me wonder if the hardware was trying to reset or if the network had a problem.

Any live sports on ABC, I get out the antenna and watch via WOTV in Battle Creek. Much more reliable signal
While I've very excited about this software upgrade for the Moto STBs, it kinda sucks cause I was getting MLB EI and MLS DK for free. All well, ya win some, ya lose some

If I could put an aerial up I should be able to get WOTV just fine. Unfortunately I have to rely on rabbit ears and can only get most of the Lansing locals.
LansingHD 06-18-07, 12:28 AM I combined 2 antennas..one pointing to my Lansing locals & one pointing to BC/GR locals. I get WOTV better 99.9 percent of the time then I do WLAJ..and I live in Lansing!! I use tethering with my Sprint Moto Q and while its faster tan dialup, its much, much slower than Cable and from my little experience with DSL its slower tan that too.
You might want to look at today's LSJ. There is an article about DSL for $10/moth with a 2 1/2yr contract. Its an AP article on te front page in the lower right corner.

I've read of this in other threads and if i remember correctly its a DHD issue that comes and goes.

I think you'd have to have a CableCard put in it. No OnDemand or PPV, and if Lansing goes SDV, you'd be even more screwed.
jefbal99 07-05-07, 03:23 PM GRRR!!!!
NBC has a weather bug up and its got the Wimblesom coverage in 4x3 rather than 16x9. Not sure is Gary is still lurking on this forum, but I'm gonna shoot him an email to see when they will be getting equipment to do scrolls and weathers bugs in HD.
I seem to remember this spring in the GR thread that WOOD had hardware installed that allowed them to do their scrolls and weather bugs w/o interruptible the HD feeds.

I could even live with them running the scroll a couple of times in 4:3, then going back to 16:9. Unless you are a complete space cadet you already know the weather is that bad if it is a warning anyway. Not only that, but they should also be promoting channel 10.2 as they do the scrolls ("For immediate weather information tune to WeatherCenter channel 10.2.")

I think its an FCC or National Weather Service mandate that broadcast channels constantly show the weather watches and warnings when they affect a DMA's viewing area.
But I agree, that NBC is missing a great opportunity to promote 10.2. It would be a struggle though, because most people don't know what digital broadcast is and wouldn't know how to find 10.2 even if they had an internal ATSC tuner because they prolly have Cable. If NBC did this, they might need to list the channel numbers where the cable ops have placed 10.2 in their digital tiers.
People with D* and E* might not have a UHF antenna hooked up or tuned to even know that the channel exists.
jefbal99 07-08-07, 10:47 AM Got a message on the STB this morning...
"We are happy to announce that 2 more HD channels- Food HD on 197 and HGTV HD on 198 effective 7/31/07. HD ccnverter is required call 1-888-COMCAST"
I'm shocked that they are getting added this fast, I haven't even heard of Detroit getting an announcement yet.

I just can't believe the stations really aren't doing more education themselves. I've posted before how I thought WILX missed a prime opportunity six weeks ago when they had a Red Wings/Tigers schedule conflict that was easily solved by putting the Red Wings HD broadcast on 10.1 and the Tigers SD on 10.2. You know full well some well-timed station promos could have gotten the ball rolling for sports fans to get educated. It's to the station's benefit for revenue if nothing else to get people aware.

I've said it in other threads, if D* can offer everything that Comcast does and at full PQ, then I'll consider a switch. I've heard their mpeg4 is great from peepes with sport beams, but they need to prove it with their national HD channels.
Comcast is giving Lansing two more HD channels this month, we'll just have to wait and see what the fall brings.
jefbal99 07-08-07, 01:56 PM Tigers are on 10.2 today, but NBC is doing nothing to promote during their Wimbledon coverage.
They should run a crawl that it is available and live on 10.2 digital ota, 249 from comcast digital, 454 Millennium digital, etc
PQ isn't the best, i'm not sure how much bandwidth WILX gives to 10.2, but its grainy.
