View Full Version : Nvidia 8800GTS cannot output 1080p on Sharp 46" LCD

The 8800gts has dual dvi outputs. I connected it to my new sharp 46" via a dvi-to-hdmi cable. No matter what I do, the tv only detects a 1080i. Anybody know if there is a way to get it running in 1080p?

Does the TV accept 1080p via its HDMI ports? Better check the manual to see if it does.

yea the tv does support 1080p through hdmi

How does 720p work? That should be another very acceptable resolution and progressive. If both 720p and 1080i work while 1080p doesn't....I'd double check the model number, manual and specs to make sure everything matches. Also, are there any options for refresh rate? Is it 1080p 60 you are using? I'm not familiar with nvidia drivers and setup so I can't help.

Maybe provide model number from the display itself (not the manual in case they mismatched it). We can probably access the manual online and check it out.

Here is the link to the TV. I bought it instores. BTW, it is a great buy (if the 1080p works using the 8800gts).

My videocard is set to 1920x1200 @ 60hz

Well if the manual says it supports 1080p through the HDMI input, tell your videocard to output 1920x1080@60hz. Force the Nvidia driver to output that rez and see what happens.

((Dunno why you're setting it to 1920x1200 since thats a 16:10 screen ratio.....))

Having said that, how does 1920x1080@30Hz look? Thats 1080i and your TV will automatically convert the signal to 1080p.......

sorry i meant 1920x1080 @ 60hz. I can't even set it to 30hz, the nvidia panel has 30hz as default

You can go into the drivers and find a way to add 1080p to the list, "forcing" the resolution.

But usually the device will tell the card what resolutions it supports.....have you actually read the manual to see if it will accept a 1080p signal over its HDMI port, or are you basing that on info you read online somewhere.....

yea the tv manual says it supports 1080p over hdmi

Try forcing the rez in the Nvidia drivers, i think its under Add HDTV Resolutions....see what happens.

I had this problem when attaching a Westinghouse 1080p monitor to my 8800 GTS a couple of months ago. At first I could only get the card to output 1080i. Then I used an NVidia program (I don't remember it's name) that came with the card to change the output settings to 1080p. I had to change it TWICE! Once for the HDTV settings and once for the PC settings. Not sure why.

I don't know if the choice of card connector matters; but, I use a dual link DVI cable plugged into the DVI connector (on the card) closest to the PCI-e slot.

I'll try to remember to look at the name of the NVidia program I used when I get home tonight. I think it was the control panel program; but, I can't seem to dig that out of my memory.

Off topic: Getting old sucks.

Thanks guys, I figured it out. You have to go to the "manage custome timings" in the Nvidia control panel. The hdtv text box must be checked, and you have to run a test to enable the 60hz. 1080p is 60hz while 1080i is 30hz.

Gotcha. That seems like a lot to go through for what is becoming a more standard input resolution. Plus, the 1080i 30hz or 60 fields always gets people.

So how's it look? Fill us in.

It looks good. Actually the 1080p and 1080i looks almost the same. I can't really tell the difference when using the dot-by-dot mode. It can not compare with my Dell 2407 in terms of sharpness but of course that would be obvious since the screen is so much bigger. I tried Oblivion on it at 1080p, but sitting at the same distance away from it as from the dell monitor, the Sharp is much less smooth, almost as if AA is not turned on.

So I guess, for now, gaming on a 24" or 30" LCD monitor is still the best.

Well you have to figure that resolution held equal, pixels on a bigger screen will be bigger and the closer you sit the more noticable they are going to be. All the AA in the world won't hide pixels so if you are close enough, you will see it. Killer video card though.

I've got a GTX and the same tv. 1080i works fine, looks crappy, but it does display. Forcing any manner of anything in that damn custom timing screen either bsod's me or screws up the display. Driver's 92.97...any ideas?

Getting a BSOD just trying differnt timings sounds like your video driver or possibly your who OS is hosed and needs to be reinstalled.

Fresh install, drivers are fine, but I uninstalled, cleaned, used ccleaner/driver cleaner, and reinstalled. It will only bsod if I make a specific change in the nv panel, the bsod is not random. Windows debugger tells me it's nv4's dll, which we all know is NV.

Got it working, see this post @ hardforum. (http://hardforum.com/showpost.php?p=1030790446&postcount=15)

Now if Vista could do it...

As the 8800GTS has two DVI outputs, can it drive two of these 1080p displays? If you did want to run two simultaneous 1080p displays, what video card would do it (preferably nVidia for their OpenGL graphics support)?

There is nothing special about driving 2 1080p monitors. A 6800gt with dual dvi will do the trick. The 8800's with dual dvi will do so with sugar on top.

kylebisme

Heh, you don't even need 6800, even an old 4600 or whatever you can find with dual DVI will do 1080p on both outputs without issue.

There is a difference between running the display on two monitors and gaming on two monitors. Can you clarify which one you are interested in? (gaming or desktop display)

Haha, yeah...Supcom would eat that up. Here are some motivating pics...
