We currently watch dvd movies on a laptop computer (no tv.) We intend to install a high quaity projector system in our vacation home; we expect to purchase the equiment here, or at least the projector, and take it to B.C. where it will be professionally installed. We know absolutely nothing about these matters so will be guided by reviews and recommendations.

My question: could I purchase say, a Sony Pearl, and proceed from there? buy a screen and a dvd player afterwards? The room we wll use is painted darkish yellow, there are window shades and no outside light. The projector will be used only/mainly at night. The big constraint will be that we will need to use a pull down rather than stationary screen.

Thanks for any advice.

How big is the room and how big of a screen do you want to use? How many people will your theater seat?

The room is a bedroom, 16'x13', with 16' the distance between the walls behind the enisioned projector and the screen. The parties watching will be mainly two, watching from bed, with their backs close to same wall back of the projector (which I imagine will be some distance forward, on the ceiling.) Occasionally there might be a chair or two placed toward either side of the central area, and perhaps a bit closer to the screen.

Sorry--screen size. We want as big a screen as possible. Based on reading so far, it looks as if we would not be able to go higher than 84" or 92", but I am not at all sure yet. We would trade size for picture quality. Thanks.

I have a bedroom setup similar in size to yours. I have tried various size and type screens in there and have settled on 75" diagonal. Anything bigger in such a small room takes up too much of your peripheral vision and lights up the room too much, but you can fit a larger screen in if you are so inclined.

I recommend reading the tutorial linked in my signature first and then if you still have questions I will be more than happy to answer them for you.

Offhand a Pearl with a 75" - 80" 1.3 to 1.5 gain screen sounds like a great combination to me.

Edit: Ok, 84" will work, but I don't recommend going any larger than that for the reasons I have already mentioned.

What did you call me? :)

I am currently evaluating the pearl in my theater. I think you will be more than happy to have this projector in your vacation home. You could use your laptop as your DVD player until you get a dedicated player.

Adj. 1. utter - without qualification; used informally as (often pejorative) intensifiers; "an arrant fool"; "a complete coward"; "a consummate fool"; "a double-dyed villain"; "gross negligence"; "a perfect idiot";

I love the Pearl. I have mine paired with a 110" (low lamp) and feel like it could light up larger. There is one for pretty good price in the for sale section. I suspect that there will be more for sale by those plagued with upgraditis.

I am watching a Pearl on a 92" Dalite motorized screen from about 12' back and love it. This is my first front projector and I thought that moving from a 60" RPTV to 92" screen would be overwhelming. It's great, much more of a theater.

i really would reccomend not going for a totally outrageous screen size because the image will be distorted, and if you want to do theat you should just get a cheaper projecor and use a big screen

apatel,

What exactly are you trying to tell? Please elaborate.

I think he may have meant at some point there is diminishing return of picture quality in respect to screen size.

There are ways to do exactly what you want regarding the Pearl and DVD players. Most notable something like an OPPO 981 or whatever else you had in mind if it's HD.

I have been enjoying a Pearl on a 106" diagonal Carada BW screen (1.4 nominal gain) for about 3 months and love it. I have it ceiling mounted at the short end of the throw and with about 300 hrs on the bulb it is plenty bright. The quietness of the PJ will work well for the bedroom. I wouldn't suggest much over 106' in your room size, but again, I have watched a lot of general tv with several room lights on with good results. Again, serious movie watching deserves a dark room, and when properly set up and calibrated, this projector will give you a beautiful, film-like presentation with great blacks, colors and shadow detail. Have fun and good luck.
