black_macleod 02-02-08, 01:40 PM Discovery channel HD is quite annoying they have quite a few audio dropouts i check the signal strength's and everything its great. Also its the only station i have issue with and it sometimes pixelates when an audio dropout also happens.
I'm actually getting drop outs on almost all my HD channels today. Maybe Charter has reached their bandwidth threshold, lol.

I'm seeing the same dropouts!
davehyunch 02-02-08, 03:40 PM Everything is breaking up more than usual, but ESPN HD and ESPN2 HD are unwatchable.
Lucid504 02-02-08, 03:55 PM Yeah give us more hd channels but the effect is more dropouts making some hd programming unwatchable.
Dirty jobs is awesome in HD.Just wish i didnt have all these issues.

So far so good on not having any drop outs. I was experiencing drop outs on Discovery HD THeater the first night, but once I checked all my connections I have not had any drops since then.
I recently picked up a new Sony 52" LCD and put a splitter in for PiP using the QAM tuner for the second line, the splitter had a power pass though and that was making the digital box side drop, but as soon as I used that side for the QAM the problems were eliminated.
I also have a Charter provided amp on that tv, if it makes a difference.
Jeff Rybak 02-03-08, 12:33 AM I am having a ton of drop outs as well, with ESPN HD and ESPN 2 HD being the worst - if this keeps up for my Super Bowl party tomorrow things are going to get very ugly. Especially because out of the group of guys I hang out with - I am the only Charter holdout and I thought things were looking good with the addition of VS HD and Discovery HD plus the new internet DVR scheduling. Charter please help!!
Lucid504 02-03-08, 01:15 AM yeah i checked out discovery hd real quick even though its a stupid dog show and im still having drop outs on that channel. I recorded Mad TV on my DVR(recorded it off 782 which is the hd channel and the channel super bowls showing on)ill tell you if i exprience drop outs if i don't then you should be fine at the super bowl problay.
bhornberger 02-03-08, 02:24 AM While setting up my PiP on my new sony 52 lcd. I went through the list that Type7 posted on the QAM channels from Charter this week and made a Google Spreadsheet to list the channel #'s, call sign, broadcast 480i, 720p, 1080i and notes.
From what I saw, 9 HD channels are coming through, 1 without Audio (A&E HD)
The link is http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=p1YUYjk2D8hxaBm7jr4r_dA&hl=en
I'm missing the Call Letters for 3 stations, I couldn't bear to watch the infomercials. If anyone can help, let me know. I'll continue to update this monthly.
thanks
Brent

I haven't experienced any dropouts on fox 2 hopefully the same for you
My ESPN-HD is having drop-outs about every 5 seconds & is making me nuts trying to watch it. I think I will be dropping an e-mail to the Charter GM @ SteveGM@chartercom.com. I plan to send him a link to this thread so everyone please post here if you are experiencing the same issue so they understand that it's a widespread issue.
Additionally, channel 2 has disappeared from my channel lineup! I did a hard reboot of the Moxi but channel 2 is still gone. This is not a huge deal as Fox-HD is fine but still very odd.
elgibby 02-03-08, 12:20 PM Dropouts on ESPN-HD too. It was rock steady before the three new channels went up.
Fox-HD has dropouts too but not as bad as ESPN.
barry
codetalker 02-03-08, 04:45 PM I was getting a ton of dropouts on ESPN yesterday. Today Fox Sports Midwest had no sound during the UNC-FSU basketball game.
I always get dropouts on ESPN HD and TNT HD
It is VERY VERY VERY VERY annoying
codetalker 02-03-08, 05:36 PM Correction - make that FSM HD had no sound. The analog FSM had sound.

Last night the UCLA basketball game on ESPN-HD was unwatchable so many breakups. Tonights Super Bowl on FOX 2 HD has several sound breakups but picture was OK on my Charter.

Yeah i eventually switched to antenna when house came on and had no breakups and during the start of house there was breakups on charter so its all about charter having problems.

Same for me, sound dropped out probably 5 - 6 times
hfthomp 02-04-08, 09:25 AM I had the same sound dropouts on all HD Channels over the weekend. Normally this would drive me up a wall, but thankfully now, I don't care. I just made the call and set up my appointment to switch over to DishNetwork. You have no idea how happy I am. I was a Charter subscriber for about a year and a half, and let me tell you I hated every minute of it. I should have dropped Charter months ago. I had nothing but horrible service and horrible products with them. In my 18 months, I went through 8 DVR boxes, 5 Moxi's and 3 3416's. I've had items show up on my bill that I didn't order and services added to my subscription that I didn't authorize. I've had problems with my signal since day one which were never completely fixed. This forum has been great, but thankfully, I'm out. Good luck to all of you Charter guys. If anyone wants a 3416 DVR, let me know.
I still have major ESPN-HD breakups as well as a lot during the Super Bowl. The picture once pixelated & froze for several seconds as a long pass was in the air towards Randy Moss - highly annoying.
I e-mailed Steve (Charter GM) last night indicating my (& others) issues. I also sent him the link to this thread. I would imagine he is aware of the thread, but not sure.
I will post his response (assuming I get one).

You'll get a response or even a phone call if you provided your phone number they are getting better with customer service.

Won't be from the GM though, as the commercial lies about.
You will most likely get a response from Doug Kappauff, who has been nice to me before.

Ive actually got emails and phone calls from Steve (GM) especially when charter kept screwing with me on appointment times to get a dvr.So they actually do not lie even in a feature about contacting him on FOX 2 News he mentioned how he forwards some emails to people who are in different deparments

Oh ok ... that is good to hear then. Their customer service is definitely improving, but it is hard to get excited about that when the offerings we are getting are not worth the money we are paying
ESPN HD is so unwatchable sometimes that I have to switch to standard and then that aggravates me to no end because I am paying for the HD channel
Several posts vanished overnight when the site was down.
So...to update my situation again...I got a call back in response to my e-mail to Charter GM Steve. The lady indicated they were not aware of any systemwide issues with ESPN-HD, Fox-HD, etc. in regards to signal dropouts. She wanted to send a tech to my house.
I told her that others on this thread were having issues & that I knew how to check my signal strength via the Moxi & it is fine. I also told her that this problem only came about after the addition of the 3 new HD channels.
I am just going to ride it out to see what happens. I did watch ESPN-HD briefly last night & it seemed fine.
:Crossing my fingers:
I think Queen said it best:
"Another one (MOXI) bites the dust"
I was one of the first in the area to have the Moxi with the Mate. Well, it finally died. I have a tech coming out tomorrow between 1 and 3 (when did they go to 2 hour windows?). I specifically said I needed the main Moxi on the Moxi/Mate combo. What are my chances that they show up with it?
I'm not holding my breath....I did email Steve Trippe but haven't heard back.

i wrote an email also im experiencing issues with some channels still it appears.
Heres my email mentioned my signal levels and everything to try and convince them that its not a signal issue.
Hello,
After the addition of the 3 new HD channels i have experienced dropouts on audio on most of the hd channels my signal levels are great and other people are reporting it on this message board:http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=805958&page=26
My signal levels according to my box are as follows:
OOB Status:
SNR: 21.4 dB GOOD
AGC: 15% GOOD
IN-Band Status:
SNR:35.6 GOOD
Upstream Status:
Requested Power Level 048dB
Actual Power Level: 048dB
This is obviously not an signal issue relating to me due to other members in the St Louis Region varying from St Louis to Ofallon and other cities are expreincing this issue too and it happened at the exact same time for everyone else. Also i refuse to let a tech come to my house to check the signal level due to it is already good i do not want to be charged for a truck roll.
marcsorel 02-06-08, 11:24 PM Is anyone having trouble with HDNet and HDNet (channels 770 and 771) tonight? I'm not getting them as of about 10pm (when I tried to tune to one). I had a bit of trouble getting ESPN and ESPN2 in HD as well, but those seem to be working now.
Are others experiencing this?
marcsorel 02-07-08, 09:08 AM Never mind-- everything seems fine this morning.
When I tuned in to ESPN-HD last night at 10:00 I got the "you do not subscribe to this channel" blue screen. I watched it a bit earlier in the evening & did not notice any drop-outs - not sure what's up.
Lucid504 02-07-08, 02:42 PM A techs coming out to my house tomorrow post any results from the tech coming out.
Update:

bballcards 02-07-08, 05:02 PM I've had some less-than-reliable cable service this past week, after months of reasonably reliable service. I've got a total of 2 HD boxes from Charter, 1 TiVo Series 3, and 1 TiVo HD. Recapping:
Saturday: 2 new cable cards installed (TiVo HD). All channels working on all boxes.
Monday: around midnight, all HD channels were lost except for Discovery HD, Versus/Golf HD, Locals in HD, FSN-MW HD, and A&E HD (with no sound). In other words, all the encrypted channels weren't coming through (ESPN HD, HBO HD, etc).
Tuesday: called to resend the cable signal. All channels were back, except on TiVo HD (Monday's problem persisted). Assumed it was a problem with the new cable cards.
Wednesday: As of 3pm, all channels back on all boxes. Around 4pm, TNT HD was lost on all boxes. Around 11pm, TNT HD was back on all boxes. However, FSN-MW HD is now not receiving any signal (I used to receive the color-test bars).
Thursday: All channels are fine on all boxes except FSN-MW HD (I am NOT receiving the color-test bars).
In summary, I'm quite perplexed. I called Charter on Tuesday about the cable cards, so they're sending a tech out on Saturday (and crediting my account $15 for my trouble). Is anyone else still receiving the color-test bars on FSN-MW HD, or is this non-signal a system-wide thing?
I too have had audio dropouts and pixelization on Fox and ESPN since the addition of the new channels. I emailed Steve Trippe, and today I was called by a CSR who said there had been no other reports of this issue and that a tech would have to come out to my house. Unfortunately, a crew of three techs was just at my house on Sunday (two-hour windows and on Sunday - the customer service is improving) to replace my dead MOXI with Motorola HD box, and they changed all the fittings and cables and checked my signal strength and basically gave me the full reacharound. All the channels were up, the On Demand worked again, but during the Super Bowl there was an audio dropout like every half an hour. I included this information in my email, related to the CSR verbally, and still all they can offer is a tech to come out? Come on, Charter. Anybody know why this is happening and if it can and will be fixed?

FSN-MW HD when there is nothing showing in hd,they put the color bars up.They rarely show anything in hd on fsn.

In my experience, that's the norm when they don't have any programming. They may just run color bars immediately before and/or after actual HD programming. Since it's not that often that there's actual HD programming on, you should expect to receive nothing on FSN HD most of the time.
If there's actually something on and you don't get anything, then yes, you have a problem, but I wouldn't worry about the lack of color bars now.
Lucid504 02-08-08, 12:31 PM Update On Charter Tech Coming Out:
Cable guy was great checked every wire and everything replaced splitter and installed a amplifier(didn't charge for it) checked outside lines and everything.Signal did get better, used to have a radioshack amplifier and this ones much better.
Verizons suing Charter...
Verizon says Charter infringed eight patents
Verizon Communications Inc., the second-largest U.S. phone company, sued Charter Communications Inc., claiming infringement of eight patents for providing telephone services on a data network.
Charter, the U.S. cable-television company controlled by billionaire Paul Allen, should be ordered to pay cash compensation for using the inventions without permission, Verizon said in a complaint filed Monday in federal court in Texarkana, Tex., where many patent challenges have been heard.
Verizon is also asking for a court order blocking St. Louis-based Charter from using the technology.
Four of the eight patents were asserted by New York-based Verizon in its successful patent litigation against Vonage Holdings Corp. Vonage settled that case for $120 million (U.S.) about seven months after a Virginia jury found in March 2007 that the Holmdel, N.J.-based company violated three of the patents.
Sounds like charter will be no more if verizon wins due to they will lose alot of money when they are already in like 18 million dollars in debt.Even if they don't go charter will lose telephone.

But the lack of programming is a concern. I scrolled through the entire two week program guide and nothing is out there. We used to at least get a couple of hi-def basketball games on the weekend.

What up with not searching google ;)
The Weather Channel said its 12,500-square-foot high-definition TV production facility in Atlanta is on track to be completed this month, and has set June 2 for the premiere of its first HD studio programs.
Once construction is complete, workers will install 10,000 square feet of access flooring and 480 electric circuits for studio lights in the facility, which is adjacent to The Weather Channel’s existing headquarters.
By early May, it will load sets into the four-story-high HD studio and start rehearsals. Weather Channel expects to launch its first two HD studio programs, Your Weather Today and Evening Edition, on June 2.

I'll trade TNT-HD, A&E HD, MD HD, weather HD, all the games, ticker, and photo cababilities on my Moxi....all worthless.

A Big Fat Zero for me.... I had no must watch shows on CBS so when I lost the HD feed I just stopped watching/recording what shows were on that channel that I did watch...
Now when we did not have ABC the only one show I watched that I hated not having HD of was Lost.. Now thanks to having the HD feed I watch several other shows that are on ABC. I can't imagine I am alone on this and would be proof to the affiliates that they do loose eyes on their advertising when they pull a feed like this. Unfortunately there are probably no stats that would prove this so in the eyes of Belo they do not feel they are doing much harm to their viewers or hurting the ratings of their content.
Either way I am unwilling to have an itemized out charge on my bill for Local channels in HD. Charter needs to come to some sort of agreement where they eat the costs/pass on through normal fees for all customers, or some other arrangement involving services/advertising and such.

I too would trade all those, plus the MTV-HD channel, to get CBS-HD.
bailorg 02-11-08, 11:02 AM how much extra would you be willing to pay for CBS-HD?
Honestly, not that much. I don't regularly watch any non-sports HD programming on CBS. Even if we did get CBS-HD, the only thing I might occasionally watch more often is Letterman.
And in terms of sports, I have a pretty solid OTA signal since I'm only a few miles from the tower. Additionally I never record live sports to watch later, so the only thing I'm losing is the ability to pause and rewind live TV.
So to summarize, I really wouldn't get much more marginal enjoyment from having Charter carry CBS-HD, so I wouldn't be willing to pay a significant amount more for it.
Every since we got the HD box and programming, all the HD channels break up, lose audio everynight! We cannot watch a complete program without missing a portion!
Charter rocks!! LOL Just not sure what to do?! I love not having to have a box for every room! But this is getting old and quick!
Anyone have the answer to what to do???

I have had Charter HD in Alton about four years. Although I have not had ANY issues past 3 1/2 years (knock on wood) I have to admit the first 4-6 months were rocky. It took several service calls at first to get all straightened out. The tech. re did my inside cables completely--I had to have a dedicated lline run to my HD TV and finally a power amplifier added to that line before I stopped having break ups. My line from outside cable box to my house is about 50 yards long as I set back from road, they said that was some of the issue. I also found that one particular technician was the HD expert so I called to local CHarter office and requested he be assigned to my service calls. Don't know if any of this applies to your situation. Good luck.

Do you have an amplifier from Charter? That might boost the signal a little bit. They are kind of nice in regards to hookup. The amp has 3 coax connectors, one to run any length you need for power that connects to a wall wart, and an in and out.

EricMEvans 02-15-08, 09:45 AM As of last night I no longer have any HD channels other than 1-1 - 1-3. Why is Charter now encrypting what they previously provided without a STB? They just dangling a carrot?
I'm sure my next question/annoyance has been covered though to dig through the entire thread would take....well....a long time.
Why is it that for years Charter has been claiming that because tv's are analog, a STB is required for digital channels though now that we have digital tuners, they still require a STB!? If I have a tv capable of getting digital, their analog excuse no longer applies and I therefore should be able to get the digital channels for which I pay. What is their excuse now?

Well crap...all the ones I have left are the 480i and 1-1 - 1-3. Should I just call and ask them to resend the programming signal? I talked with them a couple weeks ago asking for the channel listing you included and the guy had no clue what I was talking about. When I got the tv last month, I had all in the list other than 1-4, 1-5 and 1-6.

I too lost the KDNLDT signal on Charter QAM. I'm not getting any signal whatsoever on 471000KHz, and Charter has no idea what's going on.
I have a tech visit on Monday, so hopefully they can fix it.
I'm in the Edwardsville, IL area, where are you?

bhornberger 02-16-08, 05:48 PM Well crap...all the ones I have left are the 480i and 1-1 - 1-3. Should I just call and ask them to resend the programming signal? I talked with them a couple weeks ago asking for the channel listing you included and the guy had no clue what I was talking about. When I got the tv last month, I had all in the list other than 1-4, 1-5 and 1-6.
I doubt charter would know anything about QAM and digital station numbers.
Do you subscribe to HD from charter and have a HD box?
Im using my QAM tuner for my Picture in Picture and subscribe to HD with a HD Box.

Nope...The QAM is on our kitchen counter and I don't want some stupid box hogging up room. It pisses me off that Charter charges for a box to get a signal that can be received without the thing but is blocked.

I do subscribe to charter HD, and I have a DCT-6200. The channel is missing from both the digital box (Even after 5 charter resets), and it's also missing from the lineup on my HDHomeRun. Neither unit can tune the channel. It's really annoying, and I had to break out the Silver Sensor to watch Lost in HD last week.
knightcap 02-17-08, 06:55 PM This is not really an HD question, but I can't seem to find the answer: does Charter in St. Louis permit you to use your own equipment? For example, you can certainly use your own cable ready TV to receive their analog cable. But can I buy a Motorola DCT700 to receive digital cable? I currently subscribe for and pay for digital cable, and I have two Charter-supplied boxes (DCT700's). But they charge, I think, $7 per month for additional boxes. I have more TVs, and could buy the box on eBay, but I don't know if Charter will activate it?
Any experience out there with Charter and your own equipment. Also, is there a better box to buy than the DCT700 -- like one with component video output?

The people selling digital cable/HD cable boxes on eBay DO NOT actually own their boxes. They are illegally selling boxes that they rented from their cable company. You CANNOT simply buy digital cable boxes--they MUST be rented from the cable company. Charter WILL NOT activate boxes bought on eBay.
I am using my TV's built in QAM tuner to get digital channels from regular charter cable. Some of the channels do not have sound.
TNTHD is one of the channels without sound even though the reception is at 100%.
Does anyone here use QAM to get TNTHD?
If you don't subscribe to that tier (the HD tier), you won't get the sound. I have the exact same thing for TNT-HD, HDNET, and HDNET movies. I don't subscribe, but I get a picture only (no sound).
So, can anyone tell me, from experience, if one were to subscribe to the HD tier would the sound come down over QAM?
I don't want to order it and find out that it won't work. So it would be helpful if someone can confirm whether or not Discover, HDNet, HDNetMovies, TNTHD and others on the HD Tier will in fact come in over QAM.
Thanks.

No those channels are all encrypted and would require a Cable box to decode and receive just like the movie channels n' such.

Have you tried tuning them with a QAM tuner? The image shows up, but no sound.
I'm wondering if someone who subscribes to that package, and has a QAM tuner, could tell me if they receive the channel properly.

I subscribe to the HD tier, and no, they don't work properly with the QAM tuner. Why would they? Charter couldn't charge you for another box :)
Well no audio over QAM for me then I suppose :( . I can, however, get all the channels clearly over the firewire port, which I'm thrilled about.
One great note though, Charter came out to fix my missing channel 780 and installed a shiny new DCH-3200 Motorola box. HDMI, active firewire, and a very classy look compared to the DCT6200 it replaced.

Out of the HD channels listed in the spreadsheet, A&E HD is the only one that I don't get sound on, the rest of the channels not listed are encrypted and dont tune with QAM.

Have you noticed any SD picture quality improvements with the new box?
Wonder what the chances are of the Town & Country office having this new cable box... I picked up an additional HD receiver a couple months back and got stuck with one that only had DVI.... I would love HDMI on this secondary TV its hooked up to..
Have you noticed any SD picture quality improvements with the new box?
I don't actually subscribe to any SD channels, so I couldn't tell you. I'm an HD snob.
I used the DVI connection on the 6200, and I'm now using the HDMI on the 3200. The image quality is comparable, and the system overall is a lot quicker than the 6200 was.
The biggest improvement I've noticed is that when using the FireWire port to record to my Mac. Firewire is A LOT more responsive that it was on the 6200. also the EMI on every channel I've tried is still 'copy freely' so I can capture all the HD content I want. Now to see how it works with Myth.
I don't actually subscribe to any SD channels, so I couldn't tell you. I'm an HD snob.
So you got Charter to disable/cut off all access to SD content?
In case you didn't realize this but all Channels are Digital so you may not subscribe to a Digital family or sports type package but none the less all channels would come in Digital via your cable box.

I only subscribe to the HD lifeline package, so every channel except the 780's are blocked on my digital STB.

Nate, the spreadsheet lists what channels come in, in HD. Out of the ones that do come in, A&E does not have sound. You will not get all the HD channnels with QAM.
Yes I subscribe to the HD tier

Thanks for the reply. I may order the HD Tier(It's only 8 dollars, so it's no big deal) and see if I'm able to get those channels over QAM as well.
I went to my parents house after that post, they subscribe to every single channel charter provides, and I was able to tune HDNet, Discovery and HDNet Movies on my QAM tuner with no issue, so I don't see why I wouldn't be able to at my apartment if I order the HD Tier.

111.1 and 111.2, respectively. They're multiplexed on 717MHz. I got the signals with audio at my parents house.
I got the Hi-Def View package at my apartment, and, unfortunately, I am not getting the channels over QAM here(except for HDNet, which I get without audio).
I did, however, get charter to give me that package free for 12 months so I'm not going to complain. I'll just capture the shows I want over FireWire.

I pay $13 for the service, and whatever the HD box rental costs. It's really cheap. And with the HD-View package I just got them to give me free for 12 months, my cable service is a steal.
As for what you said about the SD channels, when they reset my box for the HD-View upgrade the SD lineup of my locals started coming in... it might have been that the new DCH3200 wasn't provisioned properly and that's why I never saw them.

I get neither of those channels on the Magnavox set in the kitchen utilizing its QAM tuner. I only get the stuff at 1.1, 1.2 etc. I have the full HD boat on my Tivo 3 with cablecards in the living room.
What's with the inconsistency I'm seeing here on the forum. Some are getting more HD via QAM than others. What's the magic?

So I had the day off, and since the weatherman were completely wrong on this last storm that didn't pass over us I decided to take a trip to Charters office. I was able to swap out my DVI out only box for this same model box that you said you received above. Only my box is far from brand new and looks like someone kicked it around the basketball court or something... Now I have to track down a spare HDMI cable which I thought I had but appears that I must have loaned it out to someone as I have yet to track it down.

Went to Town & Country, and when I asked the guy did not hesitate to say yes about the HDMI. So I would assume since he didn't have to go in the back to verify his supply that they should have a few.
MegaTrain 02-23-08, 11:56 PM So with only a single RF input on my TV, how can I get the CBS HD off the air signal (that Charter doesn't carry), and at the same time still get the cable channels with my QAM tuner?
I'll get my every-day signal from my Moxi DVR, of course, but I'm hoping to use the QAM for some picture-in-picture.
Can I just cram the two together with a reversed signal splitter? Or would I need some sort of RF switchbox?

It is my understanding that some frequencies overlap from QAM and OTA so it is impossible to get the 2 signals shoved through 1 RF port. So you have to choose between OTA & QAM in your PIP setup.

Hmm. That's disappointing. I haven't tested my OTA reception yet anyway (from the Fenton/Arnold area), so I don't know if this is even a real debate.
Any other broadcast HD channels that aren't on Charter besides CBS?

How are they removing the analog signals of a lcoal station that is illegal...
DroptheRemote 02-28-08, 03:00 PM How are they removing the analog signals of a lcoal station that is illegal...Not true.
A station can exercise their "must carry" rights and forgo any payment for carriage. Or the station can opt out of "must carry" by demanding payment for carriage, at which point the station is only carried if the parties can reach a commercial agreement.
In most cases, stations have only demanded payment for digital signals, leaving analog to the "must carry" regime (undoubtedly to preserve viewer numbers/ad rates).
If both analog and digital signals are subject to being removed as a result of this dispute, then the station must have demanded payment for both, opting out of analog "must carry."
Unless there has been a recent change, "must carry" provisions apply only to analog signals, or digital signals if the station does not broadcast via analog (a small number of very new stations).
siuengr 02-28-08, 04:30 PM DtR was correct, the "must carry" rule is for the benefit of the broadcast station, not the cable company. It basically says that the cable company "must carry" the local station if the local station wants it to, but it it up to the local station to pay for the installing the lines for retransmission to the cable company.
This is where the problem with HD feeds come in. The local station to not want to pay for installing the new equipment without any benefit or payment from the cable company.
I'm not sure who ends up with the raw end of the deal if a local station refuses to give the HD feed to the cable company, besides us consumers. I think the local station has more to lose not offering the HD feed because it would lose more advertising dollars from fewer viewers. But, the cable company might lose viewers to satellite if they can get all the local feeds via a dish.

And after they fix that they need to fix the 2-HD stream limitation... 2 May not be as much of an issue for the majority of people but for me its still a major turn off as it would suck if I would be unable to tune to an HD news broadcast as I am laying in bed because my primary TV had a couple things recording.
ryleyinstl 03-03-08, 09:44 PM Someone on here suggested that they were able to get HD service and only HD service from Charter. I thought I would give it a go. I called customer service and the lady actually laughed at me. So I e-mail customer service and they told me I need to start an on-line chat session. The transcript is below, word for word:
A representative will be with you shortly. You have been connected to Janet.
Janet : My name is Janet. Thank you for contacting Charter Communications. How may I assist you?
Ryley Thompson: I sent an e-mail to customer service this afternoon and they suggested I start a chat
Ryley Thompson: I will paste the e-mail into this window...one moment
Ryley Thompson: I called customer service this morning but was unable to get the service rep to understand what I was asking for.
I purchased a HDTV a few months ago and I’m interested in subscribing to HD channels from Charter. I realize that this requires a new HD set top box that I will have to rent, that is fine. However if I subscribe to HD channels I will no longer be interested in the SD channels that I now receive. I tried to get the representative to give me a price for just HD channel service by itself without all the Basic and Expanded SD channels. However she insisted that I needed the SD channels to receive the HD channels. What!? This does not make any since to me. Why would I want to pay for a bunch of SD channels to watch on my HDTV. I’m currently watching Charter SD channels on my HDTV and they don’t look very good, thus the reason I’d like to just get the HD channels and nothing more.
Is there not a cable TV bundle for people with an HDTV that just want HD channels and no SD channels?
Thanks
Ryley Thompson
Janet: May I please know what do you mean by SD channels?
Ryley Thompson: Standard Definition
Ryley Thompson: These are the channels I currently get now with my expanded basic digital package broadcast in 480i (standard definition)
Janet: I see.
Janet: I will be happy to look into your services and see if you can add HD service. Afterwards, I'll take a look at your account to make sure you have everything you need.
Janet: For me to assist you better and for security and verification purposes, may I please have the name on the account, the phone number beginning with the area code, and the last four digits of your Social Security Number?
Ryley Thompson: Name: Ryley Thompson
Ryley Thompson: Phone: 314-***-****
Ryley Thompson: Security Code: ****
Janet: Thank you.
Janet: Am I chatting with the account holder?
Ryley Thompson: correct
Janet: Thank you. Please give me a couple of minutes to pull up your account.
Janet: It looks like you have our Big Value Package + 5M Internet + Phone service. I’m glad to see you’re taking advantage of what I think is the best service around.
Ryley Thompson: It was a bloody nightmare to have installed but it works fine now
Ryley Thompson: Works really good actually
Janet: Do you mean the cable?
Ryley Thompson: Cable, Phone, Internet
Janet: I see.
Janet: I would like to inform you that you can add HD service to your current cable service for $8.00 only.
Janet: I mean, $8.00 additional to your monthly rate.
Ryley Thompson: What I’m looking for is HD channels only (with the required set top box I guess), none of this digital basic or digital expanded basic stuff in SD. Now that I have a HDTV I will never want to watch SD channels and I’m not interested in paying for channels I won’t use. Janet: No, you cannot have HD service alone without the Basic channels.
Ryley Thompson: Why is that?
Janet: With $8.00 additional to your monthly rate, you can still have your current cable service plus the HD local channels, HD lifeline and HD premium.
Janet: Because you can never have a cable service without the Basic channels.
Janet: Sorry.
Ryley Thompson: That is to bad Janet and makes absolutely no since
Janet: No, not bad.
Ryley Thompson: What would my monthly costs be if I got rid of cable TV service?
Janet: With only $8.00 additional to your monthly rate, you can have all the HD channels accessible in your area.
Janet: In some areas, they need to add $13.00 to add HD channels.
Janet: If you will drop your cable service, you will only have your Internet and phone service. Ryley Thompson: paying $50 a month to watch 15 HD channels seems a bit crazy to me when all the network stations are HD over the air for free
Ryley Thompson: Charter does not carry CBS in HD in St. Louis for some reason
Ryley Thompson: so I wouldn't get that in HD from Charter
Ryley Thompson: I'm not seeing the value here
Ryley Thompson: What would my monthly costs be if I got rid of cable TV service?
Janet: I am so sorry, Ryley, but there are many reasons why we do not carry CBS in HD.
Janet: The network provider demands for a higher cost to carry CBS and it will surely affect the rate of HD channels.
Janet: Well, there are other HD channels that are better than CBS.
Janet: Many of our customers find that way.
Janet: If you will drop your cable service, you will have a monthly rate of $85.00.
Ryley Thompson: what would that be after all the taxes and fee's?
Janet: However, you need to call 1-888-438-2427 to speak with an account specialist who can assist you with your request.
Ryley Thompson: that's fine
Janet: Is there anything else I can help you with?
Ryley Thompson: Not really.

DroptheRemote 03-03-08, 10:21 PM DISH provides an HD-only option for around $30 a month. Note that basic HD package does not include the full DISH HD lineup, but still it would probably be pretty competitive with everything that Charter provides in HD.
Not sure what the additional cost would be for the full DISH HD package...
madhoosier357 03-04-08, 07:18 PM Today I noticed that most of the QAM channels on Charter are now encrypted. A couple of days ago almost everything under 100 was in the clear. Wonder whats going on.
So I sent Steve an email asking what the "2 additional integrated services" Charter was performing for me at $6.00 per month. This after I tried to get a CSR, with a foreign accent, to explain to me on the phone. Steve passed it on as he said he didn't have access to my account at that time (WE). I waited a week. No reply. I again asked Steve and this time I also asked about "WWE VOD 24/7 at $7.99" per month. Still no reply and its been 2 weeks. If the provider can't explain what a service is, should I believe that it is a "made up" charge and refuse to pay?

The WWE VOD is a legit on demand channel, but if you didn't sign up for it, just cancel it. I didn't have any new charges on my bill for integrated services at $6 ... of course we may have different packages.

ATT offers naked DSL now, but I have no idea on their pricing for anything close to 5 meg service. I believe Charter has no 3 meg anymore, so we're all at 5 (at least) but are paying more.
AnotherDoug 03-07-08, 09:29 PM I said au revoir to Charter today after 18+ years with them and their predecessors. AT&T installed Uverse at my home yesterday. So far I'm happy.
When I called Charter to cancel, the CSR asked why. I replied Charter continues to not carry CBS-HD and with March Madness upon us, I'm switching to a service provider who does carry it. Of course I was prepared with a litany of other reasons I'm leaving. But it never came to that! No toss over to their "save" department. They just thanked me for my business and said goodbye. Not that I'm complaining too much, but any business that doesn't make any attempt to keep you as a customer is certainly headed for failure.
Is there an AVS thread dedicated to St. Louis Uverse? I'm formulating a few questions now that I'm getting into the service, and I'm not sure I want to air them here on the Charter thread.

tchumley 03-09-08, 01:26 PM I'm wondering if anyone has gotten a CableCard without being subscribed to any sort of digital cable. I currently have expanded basic analog cable on a promotional price and am interested in getting just a CableCard to plug into my TivoHD in order to subscribe to MLB Extra Innings.
I'm not really interested in subscribing to digital cable since I figure I'd lose my current promotion. Has anyone been able to do this? Is it possible? I would call in myself to find out, but I get the impression a lot of CSRs are not well informed about CableCard.
Thanks :)

When you press the phone option to "cancel service", you are automatically connected to the "save" department. I am surprised they did not make more of an effort to keep your business.

That's the angle I tried on Charter about 18 months ago when I went HD. Absolultely no way were they going to do that without me being subscribed to Digital.

It seems I have to re-negotiate my Charter deal every 6 months. I always wait until the last option which is canceling service. These are manned by the best trained "friendly" CSR's money can buy and they will work with you....at least they always do with me.
Be friendly and just say "Hey you just raised my rates and I really can't afford that and am thinking of going to Dish.....:D"

To recap, I cancelled on Friday, and they didn't attempt to get me to reconsider. On Friday afternoon they called me to ask when was I going to return the converter box and cable card, even though the disconnect CSR told me to drop these things off at their office (which I promptly did earlier in the day). As usual, left hand knows nothing of right hand.
On Monday they had a tech out on my line pulling the plug. Apparently you get faster on-site tech service when you cancel than when you are a paying customer.
So far, they are behaving like a company that really does not want my business! Why? I never was late with a payment. I never yelled at a CSR over service issues. They didn't make repeated visits to my home for frivilous service calls.
Last night (Wednesday) I got "the call" at around 8:30pm. Why did I disconnect, was it price or service? I said it was that and a continued lack of CBS HD, and I was not going to watch NCAA hoops in SD on an HD set any more. Well, was I happy with my switch to another provider? Hell yes, was my reply.
Then out came the kitchen sink. I could have 5MB internet for only $19.99 per month for one year! Nice try. No thanks. How about telephone with all the trimmings for $15 per month? Again, no thanks. Then came the inquisition, a litany of queries. How could I refuse all these fabulous offers at such a low cost? I said Look, it's over, I'm gone and not coming back. Goodbye. Click.
So, yes, I think they are able to make deals with you if you're willing snivel a bit.
StockInv 03-13-08, 01:08 PM This morning Charter's stock hit an all time low of .61. Currently, it's up to .81
They have big problems, the biggest is too much debt, and too little cash.
gothamcity 03-13-08, 09:30 PM The CFO resigned the other day. A VERY BAD sign for the health of this .81 stock company. This company is on the brink of disaster. They will either be bought out or go bankrupt. Likely bought out within 1 year. Time Warner Cable most likely buyer, maybe Comcast or someone else. Paul Allen's one time "wet dream" is all but gone.
I think my Moxi just bit the dust! The TV screen went blank & the Moxi display is just faintly flashing. I tried several reboots & nothing is working.
Assuming Moxis are not in stock, what is the current HD DVR? Can I just pick one up at a Charter office & hook it up myself? Will my external hard drive work on the Charter non-Moxi DVR?

The current HD DVR is Motorola DCH3416, no external hd support, i copy the stuff to my computer using Firewire. I was able to pick up a replacement of my DCH3416 a few days ago. So if your lucky youll be able to get one. The problem i had with my DCH3416 is it kept resetting itself every 20 minutes.

Make sure you try a "hard" reboot, where you unplug the Moxi for a few minutes, then plug it back in.
ON EDIT: I just saw your posting on the Moxi thread showing you already tried the above.

I tried that several times with no luck.
I just went to the STL Charter office on Manchester & they confirmed only techs can install the Moxi. I have the day off & they were able to schedule me today from 1 - 3. They put Moxi in the work order but we shall see...
If he shows up without a moxi. Tell him or her to go back and get one. They have rebuilds available. They just don't want to give them out. They tried that with me. Didn't like to new box so, they brought out a moxi on the following Monday. It is worth the wait.
I was looking into U-Verse, but the wife was not enthused about switching equipment and whatnot, so I gave a quick call to Charter, asked what they could do for me, and got switched to retention. I said I wasn't asking for a break on my bill (I'm already on a promo rate), and she offered me a year of HBO and Cinemax free, no one-time setup charge or anything like that. HBO and Cinemax together are roughly $25 a month, so that's $300 for the free year. I'm pretty impressed with Charter right now (there's a first time for everything). I guess it never hurts to ask.

Well, the tech just came. He was a nice guy & on-time but, of course, did not bring a Moxi with them. To his credit, he did make some calls & was told "they should have a new shipment of Moxis in two weeks". Of course, he also said that Moxis were being phased out & the Moto was the new unit. But, I also realize that the techs are not always up to speed on the equipment pipeline.
So, for now, I have the Motorola DCH3416 with no access to everything recorded on my external drive & worse yet...no 15 second skip!!!
CharterJames of Moxi thread fame has indicated that there is a new (black) Moxi in the pipeline. Hopefully, this is what Charter is getting in.

I just downloaded the DCH3416 manual but do not see a way to use the remote to adjust volume via my Pioneer receiver. I had my Moxi remote synced up that way somehow.
Does anyone know if the 3416 remote can be programmed that way?

When my 2nd Moxi died a couple weeks ago, I specifically asked to bring another Moxi out ... and when the tech called saying he was x minutes away from showing up, I asked him if he had a Moxi for me .... cause I wasn't even going to bother if he didn't ... but he did.
I had to force the 4.x software update myself after he left as I noticed my external HD support option wasn't there ... but its been going strong. This is Moxi #3 for me, hehe.
Oh, btw, everything on your external HD is trash ... cause when you do get a new Moxi, it will erase the HD again once you hook it up. They don't transfer from one Moxi to the other.

New Charter survey came in the mail today for HD stations.
www.charterhdsurvey.com for those that did not get the mailer
I got the mail as well and I have to say it is very disappointing to see their default list as you know that is probably companies they already have contracts with/in the works and it is just bandwidth that keeps them turning them all on. They have a spot for write it in but you know write in votes won't get as much as those that just choose from that list.
I want FX HD, USA HD, and TLC HD are probably the next most watched networks that I currently do not have in HD. Of those only TLC (which is for the wife) is on the list.
Going to suck hard if they add all those on the list in the coming year and then start worrying about the write in votes.

One important point (for me anyway), I can get CBS-HD OTA, I can't say the same for the other options.
I voted for TBS-HD as my first choice due to their baseball coverage. In addition to some regular season games, they also now have the rights to the Division Series and NLCS.

And everyone here that has kids and is subjected to hours of hanna montana, I hope Disney HD was picked as a choice. That has to be one of the worst looking SD pictures on an HD tv.
Lucid504 03-20-08, 02:50 AM Just got Direct TV installed never turning back to charter im fed up with their rude customer service love blaming everything on you like my dvr kept restarting they wanted to blame it on my wiring and then they was really rude when i canceled and told me false facts about direct tv and kept trying to win me back even though i had already had direct installed and been signed to a 2 year contract....and i even stated that.Going to direct saved me 35 a month.
siuengr 03-24-08, 11:55 AM I was frustrated with the stations on the survey and decided to email Charter with my comments. Here are the email and response that I received.
Steve,
I was very impressed today when I received the HD survey card in the mail. I am happy to see the Charter is making an effort to see what channels their customers actually what to see in HD. The problem is that two of the channels I keep waiting for Charter to offer, FX and Sci-Fi Channel, were not even on the list. I know both are available and offer a lot of HD content. I was disappointed when The Weather Channel HD was added, because they offer almost no HD programming and I don't really care if I see the weather in HD. There are other channels on your survery list that fall into this category of channels that don't offer much HD programming or programming that doesn't matter if it is in HD, such as CNN HD or Wealth HD. I am sure they are popular channels, but do they benefit from HD?
Thank you for your time
I am responding on behalf of Steve Trippe. Thank you for your note.
We chose the networks on the survey based on the agreements we currently have with programmers. Our corporate office is working on contracts with the owners of FX and Sci-Fi Channel and I’m confident we will be able to add them in the future. We will use the results of this survey to add programming chosen by our customers. This will not be the last of the channels we’ll add in 2008.
Thanks again for your note. We appreciate hearing from you.

Can't say I am surprised as I suspected that list was short for that very reason. It makes since if they already have the contracts in place with them that they would want to shove them down our throats... Problem is they have a lot of fluff/stupid channels on that list that probably pays Charter to carry them because they know they are pointless in HD like CNN, Weather, and History.
chuckparr 03-24-08, 05:27 PM You mean you don't enjoy watching cold fronts, high pressure systems etc. in glorious HD? Imagine how empty your life was until you started getting Weather Channel in HD. Who needs Sci Fi or even CBS for that matter? :)

Emailing Steve does indeed lead to results (quickly!). I had a billing issue after I had two cable cards installed while also returning an HD set-top box. Charter continued to bill me for the box I had returned for 3 months....I argued with a CSR on the phone for almost an hour with no results, but one email fixed the issue in less than 2 days. Has anyone been having issues accessing all google.com domain sites lately?
Just yesterday it started happening with me, I couldn't hit google.com
However, I was able to hit it from a different ip address google has (starting with 74) so I thought it was a DNS issue with Charter so I called them and of course then were worthless
Then I ran for spyware checks and everything (even though I know I didn't have any problems with that because I'm not a moron with computer stuff in terms of keeping it clean) and it was clean.
I just don't understand what is going on.
If I flush the dns from the cmd console, it works again, but eventually starts timing out again
Any thoughts?

I was having this problem yesterday as well. I just changed my DNS servers on my router to 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 rather than worrying about it though.
Robert Simandl 04-05-08, 07:47 PM If you're gonna change the DNS servers on your router, just go all the way and change them to 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220. gbshuler1 04-07-08, 05:10 PM I got new 10Mbps service from Charter over the weekend. It works, but there are a few odd things I am trying to come to grips with.
Max download speed over old DSL network: 2.5Mbps according to speedtest dot net .
Max download speed with new network over Cable Modem: 4Mbps (far less than 10Mbps!!)
This network consists of:
Cable Modem ----> 8 Yr Old Linksys Router (no wifi) ----> Airport Extreme 802.11b/g/n WiFi Router ----> Macbook Pro locked into 802.11n (or TiVo, or PC)
This network works fine. but I wanted 10Mbps speed. Could it be something in the middle acting as a bottleneck? My 8 year old Linksys router perhaps? Hmm..
I cut out the two middle pieces and connected directly to the Cable Modem. I was unable to surf. I was given an IP of 169.*.*.*. Doesn't sound like a Charter IP..?
The I put the Airport Extreme router back in between the cable modem and the Macbook Pro/TiVo/PC's. Same thing as above (no surfing, IP of 169.*.*.*)
What can I do to
1. Get 10Mbps speed
2. Be able to connect directly to the cable modem if I want to do a speed test.
3. Be able to use my Airport Extreme 802.11n WiFi Router without the old Linksys router?
[UPDATE] Turns out the cable modem is a little shy about giving out the WAN IP address. Recycling both the cable modem and the airport extreme base station a few times finally coaxed the cable modem into giving me an IP starting with 24.*.*.* (Charters domain). Renewing the DHCP address with software is the best solution. Unfortunately I couldn't find a way to do this in the admin software for my base station (thus the modem.router recycles). I also clocked a 9 Mbps on the dslreports site. Sweet..

elgibby 04-07-08, 08:16 PM Anyone having any trouble with HD in St Louis tonight?
I tuned in 792/FSM to watch the Cards and get the no signal screen.
782/Fox and 775/HD Theater are also no signal.
789/PBS and 781/CW are pixelated and unwatchable.
I called about the FoxHD earlier today. The man on the phone made me reboot the box. Then when that didn't work, he had me check my connections. When that didn't work, he was going to send somebody out tomorrow. Then when FSMW didn't work I called again and the lady said that the network is having a problem with that station and FoxHD. I asked why the other guy didn't know that but, she wouldn't say he was an idiot. Oh, and no idea when it will be fixed.

Everything started working again about 8:50 p.m. (Good thing I recorded New Amsterdam on my backup DVD recorder, and even there the Fox SD stuttered a few times.)
My wife asked me why I didn't call Charter. I just looked at her, and she said, "Oh, yeah, right."

tonycsmoke 04-08-08, 11:47 AM Channel 11 has been off and on for several days. I prefer to watch the Blues game on the HD channel even though the game is SD. The pic is much better on my TV. It has been so pixelated that it's unwatchable.
DTV is supposed to come out today - I found somebody that said they would attach to the side of my house. The other installers wouldn't do it. Keeping my fingers crossed that they will and the rain will hold off long enough.
Has anyone else had problems with ch 782 and 785? I've had so much tiling and audio issues that is throwing up the "blue screen" that I don't subscribe.

chatanp 04-09-08, 03:54 PM I'm a subscriber to the MLB Extra Innings package. I get the programming with no problem on my Moxi and Moxi-mate.
Until a few days ago, I was also receiving the games on another LCD TV via the built-in QAM. Then yesterday, for some reason, only one of the channels was coming through (Rockies/Diamond Backs game). The rest of the channel gave nothing.
Have any other people who get MLB Extra Innings experienced this?
Thanks,

I am so sick of Charter - I am done with them. I can no longer put up with their lack of HD channels and the one's that do come through are choppy as all hell more often than not.
The very second that DirectTV offers the NFL Package for free to new subscribers I am switching and will give the middle finger to Charter as I'm turning in my ****

yeeahhh...they don't offer that for free. ever.
Left Jeff 04-10-08, 11:55 AM Hey Charter folks, looking for a little help.
Currently I am OTA-only with a TivoHD.
I am considering getting Charter just for summer to watch the Cardinals.
Since I have QAM capabilities, I am trying to decide which package I might go with: either expanded basic analog w/o cablecards or digital w/cable cards.
Here's the big question for me: I know the availability of digital QAM seems to come and go...but my understanding is that the LOCALS are always there, in the clear and in HD correct?
To go along with that, looking over Charter's channel selection, they list FSN Midwest-HD as "HD lifeline", just like the hd versions of nbc, pbs, cw, etc...so is FSNMW-HD passed through in the clear?
Obviously if I can just get cheapest option and watch FSNMW-HD in the clear, that's what I'll do....
*EDIT*
It also my understanding that if I went basic analog cable (like the $15 one) that some kind of filter is placed on my line...does this COMPLETELY block ALL QAM, or just some...and would it block fsnmw-hd.
I have charter HD here in St Louis. Right now I am running a component cable to my TV. Would I benenfit using an HDMI cable, or would that be wasting money?
My digital box is a Motorola DCH3200

I have the Motorola DCH6200 from Charter and have the HDMI cable going to my HDTV. The downside of having this setup (from my perspective) is that I can't zoom in when there's a letterboxed movie being aired by an SD channel. I have to switch to my DVD Recorder in order to zoom in (Component from DVD Recorder to the TV). Previously, when I had the Component cable connected from the HD Box to the TV, I had no problem using my TV's Zoom functions.
It's just a matter of preference on which you'd rather use and whether the zoom in function is a necessity for your viewing enjoyment. Others might have a different experience, so I hope this helps somewhat.

Yeah- instead there are non-HD golf HIGHLIGHTS. Who decided that highlights were better than a LIVE PLAYOFF GAME?
Is there some way to blame Charter for this?
black_macleod 04-11-08, 07:31 PM There's plenty of Hocky on VS tonight .... maybe they're not set up for HD broadcast. I have a feeling that Golf will always trump VS programming on that mixed station, especially this weekend.

Any recommendations in the St Louis area where I can find some inexpensive HDMI cables for my tv?

bodean, I prefer HDMI because it's one cable, as opposed to five. I don't really notice a huge difference in quality, but it freed up my lone component input for video games. If you're looking for inexpensive, but high quality HDMI cables, I recommend Monoprice. I can't post the link, since this is my first post, but just go to monoprice.com. Today's deal is a 3 ft. Black HDMI cable for $2.81. I got a 10 ft. Blue HDMI cable a few weeks ago for $3.94.

I got so happy when I saw your subject about 8 new HD channels, but then I read the list. The only one that I am even excited about is TBS HD.
They still need to add Food Network HD and get CBS in HD back at the very least before I start to get excited.
I'm so starved for HD, I'm excited for all of them.
I agree, as a scientist I am excited about the Smithsonian and the Science channel although I have never seen them. But now I will at least sample them. I hope they arn't like the History channel...which has a lot of programs that are not very factual. They should call it the Pseudoscience Channel...I don't know about the accuracy of the "history" show like WWII but if they are like their "science/supernatural" related shows I wouldn't believe a thing they say. Although I must admit I like "Axmen" and Modern Marvels.
At least they are making some progress. They really need to get the CBS issue resolved, though. Fortunately, my upstairs bedroom plasma gets a good OTA signal with a Silver Sensor for must-see viewing such as The Masters.
Once DirecTV officially rolls out their Single Wire Multiswitch (minimizing needed cable runs), I am going to be very tempted to bail on Charter if they still do not have CBS-HD & NFL Network-HD.

I had Charter out today to replace my dead Moxi, and I asked about my internet not being as fast as it should. I am paying for 10M service but only getting 4.5Mbps. He said it was probably the cable modem. He swapped the modem with a new one, and sure enough I starting getting 10M even going though my old linksys wireless router.
Fury1984 04-15-08, 03:47 PM Although I must admit I like "Axmen" and Modern Marvels.
I love me some Modern Marvels. I actually recorded the one about "Deep Freezes" this afternoon. I also enjoy UFO Hunters, the series The States, and the series The Presidents. I occasionally like to watch Dogfights, too. While it is true that some of the shows on the History Channel contain speculative information, it's interesting enough to keep me tuned in.
I haven't received the mailer yet, but this is great news. I sent an e-mail yesterday requesting that TBS-HD be added before the MLB playoffs this year. Looks like that request has been granted!
I had Charter out today to replace my dead Moxi, and I asked about my internet not being as fast as it should.
I assume you got the Motorola box as a replacement for your Moxi? I have had mine for a few weeks since my Moxi died & really wish I had a Moxi.
BillydaBob 04-16-08, 02:13 AM I'm a first time poster, but I have been reading this forum for years. Never posted anything as I never had any questions, complaints, helpful info regarding Charter HD. I am VERY excited that Charter is going to add more HD channels no matter what they are.
Anyway, my question has nothing to do with HD. I know a lot of you have your sources and thought I would try my question here as Charter couldn't answer it tonight. I have the full video package and got my bill recently and it stated that "Effective April 15, 2008, the price of the Playboy Channel subscription service will be changing from $14.99 to $19.99 per month, an increase of $5.00 and will include 24/7 access to the Playboy On Demand service". Of course my roommates saw this and got excited. However, when I got home from work a couple of hours ago one of my roommates said he tried it out and it still said the program was $12.99 for the VOD short. Thank goodness he didn't order it for a 30 min program. So does anyone know what the deal with this is? Is the content free if your a sub? Or are they just using creative language to say I can order 24/7 for a price? The only thing Charter told me is that it is going up in price, but they have no details and promptly hung up before I could get a word in. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah the single wire run is a huge requirement for me to consider directtv and is one of the major reasons I haven't called to negotiate some new customer deals with them. It was my understanding that the multi-switch came out mid last year yet somehow it is still very rare for an installer to actually have. You would think they would be quick to offer something like this up since it saves the installer time and effort to get a customer going if they only need one line.

That is the biggest reason I switched from Charter to Dish TV was that Dish TV has had the single wire technology for several years now. Also, I think Dish TV has the best HD DVR on the market, the VIP622/722. Both DVRs has built in OTA antenna capability and if you have the antenna connected up you can record three programs at the same time (two satellite, one OTA) and watch a recorded program. Also, the TV2 connection to all other TVs in your come can watch a different channel than the one connected to the TV1 primary TV.

Charter should still be able to get you an older Moxi as a replacement, you just have to ask.
I will be shocked if we ever see CBS HD on Charter in St Louis. It would have to take the replacement of both sides management teams for that to happen. Although we did finally get ABC HD in St Louis so, there is always hope. Until then, I just switch to over the air for my CBS content.

My Moxi 9022 died about a week ago and the tech had both Moxi 9012's and 9022 available.
Granted, the 9022 he gave me is more scratched and dinged up than the 11 year old car sitting in my garage, so who knows how long it will last, but at least I have a working 9022 w/Moxi Mate.

Same here. The tech was a nice guy & actually called in to see if any Moxis were available. I also e-mailed GM Steve & got a reply that the new "black" Moxis are in testing phase with a target release date of early to mid 2009.
The DCH3416 seems to have a bit better SD PQ & operates faster but has many drawbacks to the Moxi (no external storage capability, no dual buffer, no skip button on remote, lame on-screen guide, etc.).
I just can't decide if it's worth complaining to get a beat-up Moxi.

The 3416 actually has 30 second skip and dual buffer, but it takes a little magic to get them to work. There are two options for the 30 second skip. One is to order the right Comcast remote from ebay which can be programmed with the 30 second skip feature. The other is to use a harmony remote, then specify the DCH6416 and use the "Advance" function, which is the 30 second skip.
The dual buffer is easy though, just use PiPSwap instead of "Prev" and it will switch tuners allowing you to rewind either one.

hot damn, 2009... what the frack do they have to do testing for so long to have an entire year before they get deployed. Especially considering the Moxi retail was supposed to be ready and out end of last year so you can't imagine that Digeo is really that fracked up and far behind.... What happened to the retail MOXI? Last summer I went to a demonstration in St Louis for the new MOXIs. Decided I liked Dish TV DVRs much better. Does anybody know what happened? The MOXI forum is even shut down. Thanks.

This doesn't tell me a whole lot. People get these channels because they have to, not because they want to. CNN and TWC are always included in basic cable, thats why they have the most subscribers. According to Neilsen, Spongebob is about the most popular show on cable. http://www.nielsenmedia.com/nc/portal/site/Public/menuitem.43afce2fac27e890311ba0a347a062a0/?show=%2FFilters%2FPublic%2Ftop_tv_ratings%2Fcable_tv&selOneIndex=1&vgnextoid=9e4df9669fa14010VgnVCM100000880a260aRCRD

OK, thanks for the info siuengr. MoxiGuy by the way was a very pretty female. I think the retail MOXI would have probably been priced too high. I sure like Dish TV's VIP722 HD DVR. It is highly reliable. 500g hard drive, USB external hard drive is active, PIP, Cat5 is active, and the best thing I like about it you can record three things at the same time with OTA antenna connected to it.

Yes, you can access the hard drive from the remote TVs. On the DVR the TV2 out port (coax RG6) goes to your home distribution system or direct to another TV. It is not in HD. You can watch something that has been Tivoed or live TV. The TV that the DVR is connected too is called TV1. It is connected by HD cables. TV1 and TV2 can watch different channels or different Tivoed things at the same time. Direct TV DVRs can't do that. All TVs have to watch the same thing at the same time. Also Direct TVs HD DVRs can't record three things at the same time. Dish TV you only need one coax for the two tuners. Direct TV has developed the same technology and it has started or getting close to be available.
[QUOTE=siuengr;13664242]This doesn't tell me a whole lot. People get these channels because they have to, not because they want to. CNN and TWC are always included in basic cable, thats why they have the most subscribers. According to Neilsen, Spongebob is about the most popular show on cable.
I understand what you are saying, that more households have access to CNN. I dont have the numbers but I would imagine there are more viewers watching CNN at any one time rather than SciFi, even though SciFi probably has better content for HD. Bottom line is they needed a news network in HD for the average folks, not the tech savvy. The only solution is 8 more channels launched in June with SciFi and say NHL Network and we can all be happy :D

I am curious about this. The second part of the question was, "Can you watch two different recorded shows while recording two new shows?"
My son has Dish HD. He uses the TV1 and TV2 function for the second TV in the daughter's bedroom. How can you watch TV1 while reording a program on TV1 when TV2 is on? Everytime I have tried to change the channel from the recording program, I have to stop the recording before the channel will switch. Is there some secret to watching different programming while recording?
My Son-in-Law has Directv. He has 2 HR20s, 1 HR21, 1 H20, and 2 SD Boxes. He is not limited to watching the same programing on all the devices.

Don't understand the tense difference between had and has.

Yes, with the DVR in dual mode you can watch a recording on TV1 and a different recording on the remote TV2 and also be recording two channels all at the same time. I am new to Dish TV and have three VIP722 HD DVRs and one 625 SD DVR, so I hardly ever use the DVRs in dual mode. So I did a test and it worked. As far as the channel changing problem you are having, have your son check this setting. DVR should be in dual mode. Go into the DVR menu and check the Record Plus setup (menu-8-6). Try setting Activation to Enable and Record Preference to TV2. Let me know how this works out for you. Again, I am a little rusty using the TV2 setup.
I am not familiar with Direct TVs receivers. When I was checking into Direct and Dish I tried to learn as much as I could about both satellite companies receivers. I was told that Direct TVs receivers can only watch at the remote TVs throughout your home on the same channel that the satellite receiver is on. And to connect to the home distribution system you have to add a coax modulator at the receiver. Dish TV receivers has this coax TV2 out modulator built in. I took a look at the manuals on line for the HR20, HR21, and the H20. These receivers do not have TV2 out capability. So that means your son-in-law is limited to watching the same program on all the other TVs throughout his home. Of course you can watch different programming if you have receiver box at each of the remote TVs which he probably has. He has six boxes so he can watch different programming at six TVs. I have 12 TV locations with 11 TVs hooked up so I have three of my DVRs connected to the home distribution system. Every remote TV in my home and the primary TVs that have a satellite receiver connected up all can watch each other. This is thru the TV2 modulated out setup. Or the receivers can be left in single mode and still be viewed too if need be. In single mode they are like Direct TVs receivers are at all times. Here is a pic of my head end area where I have all this home distribution setup in one area.

Thanks for the info. I am in Texas now but am going to Chicago next week. I will try what you suggest at my son's then.

OK Walt. If it don't work out let me know. I can try out different setups to see what the deal is. Also, I get bunches of good info from the SatelliteGuys.US forum too. Someone will have the answer.

Thanks, did it all myself too. My Dish satellite retailer let me do it all. He just installed the two satellite dishes. I wanted to put everything in one of them head end cabinets but the upstairs coax was too short and it is too hard to redo the coax to the 2nd floor. So I just threw up a board and mounted everything.
davehyunch 04-23-08, 10:20 AM anyone else having problems with moxi playing espn hd and espn2 hd? i've had the blue screen of death for 2 days now. my bedroom is getting the channels fine, but it's running a non-dvr hd receiver (moto).
tonycsmoke 04-23-08, 10:45 AM Several of my channels have been bad the last few days. Seems that PBS is bad and last night VS was in and out.
Anybody else having problesm with Moxi lately. I thought my remote was messed up at first. All of a sudden no buttons will respond and then it will....weird.
Anybody?

I have been noticing an increase in slowness with my moxi lately.. It seems this problem comes and goes probably dependent on signal strength happiness or at least thats my theory. It seems since the 4.1 upgrade it all felt much faster at first but slowly more and more I feel like I am slamming buttons on my remote trying to get the moxi to respond.
davehyunch 04-25-08, 03:45 PM yes, i'm having moxi problems. here's something totally strange. when i walk near the thing, i get a interference on my picture when watching espn hd and espn2 hd. when this happens, my remote becomes completely unresponsive. it takes 30-60 seconds to change to a channel that works.
a tech came over yesterday and told me that charter had recently changed the channel/frequency for these channels. he basically said that it's a known issue and to just wait until it gets resolved (it's been 5 days and counting).
when i called charter, the csr told me that they had no idea what i was talking about. the csr also told me to wait about 2 weeks to get this resolved. i'm actually going to patiently, yet reluctantly, wait this out
Don't know if this is related, but I am having issues with my On-Demand not working. Its been about a week. I switched boxes and still have the problem. I had an appointment to have a tech come out today, but they called and said there is an issue with the service and they are working to resolve it....therefore my appt was cancelled. So far since this morning about half of my on-demand programs work. Anyone else having issues?
I just wanted to be post #1000..:D..ah nice.
Actually i just tried to On Demand movies and they played fine. Can you tell me which On Demand programs and I'll try it also.
My remote is still acting up. I actually have four idetical Moxi remotes so it is not the remote byut the response of the Moxi....Also the Moxi Mate works fine....
Wayne
The on-demand programs I had troubles with this morning were HBO (except HBO-HD) and Cinemax HD. I didn't try any of the networks as of yet as I had to go to work. I'll be trying them tonight.
