I am looking at this model:
Sony VPL-VW50 Projector
Or possibly its bigger brother.
I have several questions (feel free to comment on 1 or all of them)
1. Is this projector overkill? I am not a super videophile.
2. Is this projectors big brother really worth twice as much MSRP?
3. How well would this future proof me for the next decade?
4. What are some issues (things I may not have thought about or drawbacks) associated with projectors?
5. Will 1080p see a drastic reduction in price over the next 6 to 20 months?
6. What are some other really good 1080p projectors that I can get for under 5K.
Thanks a head of time for your insight.

If your goal is reasonable quality on HD material (movies and gaming), then no, it's not overkill.
2. Is this projectors big brother really worth twice as much MSRP?
The general consensus is that it is not.
3. How well would this future proof me for the next decade?
I left my crystal ball at home today.
4. What are some issues (things I may not have thought about or drawbacks) associated with projectors?
They don't tolerate ambient light well--that's the main issue.
5. Will 1080p see a drastic reduction in price over the next 6 to 20 months?
Probably.
6. What are some other really good 1080p projectors that I can get for under 5K.
The Pearl gets most of the attention at that price point.
Either one is a great choice for 1080p... :)

Either would work. Likely if most your use is gaming, the Pearl is a better bet. Why? First, less money. Second, if you are like most gamers you will be on it for quite a while. At $1000 a 1000 hours for the Ruby, you better have a few lamps sitting around. :)

I am having trouble locating information on the pearl...
How much is it, where can I go for info?

Cool.
I saw the Pearl for $3K.
I figure that is a good price for that model.

Make sure it's from an authorized dealer, but at that price, I'm pretty certain it's not :(

I'm not sure, we might be near the "max" resolution for consumer TVs - but I doubt it. I will go on a limb and say you won't be able to hold out 10 yeras with any projector right now.
New technology will come that will double the contrast ratio, double or triple the lumens, etc - if the resolution stays the same....
Under 5K? Look at the JVC RS-1.
