I have been getting this audio distortion problem that happens every time I watch a show on WEDU's national PBS HD feed. About 20 minutes into an hour long show it seems like someone is slowly turning up the volume gain for the broadcast at the source until it reaches the max and every thing is really distorted and hard to hear for 15 seconds and then it resets to normal and is gone for an hour (the actual sound level does not increase). I talked to our local master control after confirming it happens on OTA and two cable providers (3 different addresses). They said it is probably a national feed problem and did not have a solution. They multicast a couple of other channels also.

Can someone shed some light on why this could be happening and suggest possible solutions to this problem?

Thanks

This should be a local thread issue, but PLEASE don't send it there just yet.

I heard this problem when I was visiting the Tampa area, and I believe it is a problem when the audio and video clocks are not locked together. As the two drift, the audio gets distorted and then clears up after a few minutes. This should not normally happen, but I've seen it be a problem at other stations. Other PBS stations that decode the PBS feed to insert their logo may have this problem too, so this could have interest outside the Tampa area.

BTW, they decode the PBS audio and ruin the 5.1 audio on the HDTV feed that they receive from PBS on programs like Great Performances (Met Opera, for one.)

I receive PBS via DirecTV National feed, I don't have a sound problem, however the screen goes blank, the sound continues - the duration is from split second to 5-10 seconds.

To avoid confusion (as I posted in another thread), WEDU does not transmit 5.1 audio and has no plans to do. Same for Orlando.
