I've looked and looked and cannot find anything about what heights require guy wiring. For our install we have a 5 foot mast, a 10 foot mast and a rotator. The old antenna was mounted to the side of the house near the eave with the 5 foot mast. I picked up a 10 foot mast and want to attach that to the side of the house with the rotator on top of that, then the 5 foot mast and then the antenna. That would put it about 12 feet over the roof line. Am I better off with a guyed roof mount or chimney straps or is it ok on the side of the house? There isnt much wind here and it rarely gusts over 20~30mph, possibly some ice in the winter. House is single story and the antenna is a 91XG with mast mounted preamp. What would you do?

use conduit instead of guys. see pic.
flatten the ends with a hammer to fit. bolt/attach below the rotor and the other end to the roof.
very solid and something sturdy to hold on to.

Man youre fast! haha thanks. Is this a special type of conduit of just like an aluminum pipe?

It's called EMT conduit.Works great for brackets. The nominal size mentioned above is 1". 3/4" works well also.A large vise comes in handy, too.I've used it to make custom standoff brackets to fit right below 4" gutters. In this case you make two identical brackets, flattening two ends far enough back for two holes. Then overlap them and use a u-bolt to the mast.

I'd appreciate if you would describe how to securely attach the EMT conduit below the rotor. A close-up image that demonstrates this point would also be helpful.
Thanks

Does anyone have a close-up image that demonstrates the attachment of the EMT conduit below the rotor?

Does anyone have a close-up image that demonstrates the attachment of the EMT conduit below the rotor?Sorry, not exactly what you asked for but it may help. First, I would procure a CM-9017 or similar, one can be found here (http://www.solidsignal.com/prod_display.asp?prod=CM9017). Next you can procure some EMT as described above, cut to desired length, flatten the ends and drill the required holes.
Click the Green in my signature line and open the Antenna-0001.pdf file. You can see how I used 3/4" EMT for braces in a satellite dish install. At the low point of the brace, just before the flatten section, I drilled a 1/8" hole on the underside of the brace to act as condensation drain.

Hi Wendell,
A galvanized u-bolt is used to attach the EMT conduit to the mast just below the rotor. Condensation drain = good idea also.
Thanks for your reply!

Thanks for your reply!Your welcome. A couple more hints I have remembered. I used a standard tubing cutter to cut the EMT, this produces a very nice clean cut. After the ends are flattened it will cause a small protrusion at the end of the EMT. This protrusion will have a very sharp edge to it, just use a flat mill file to remove it.
