Actually the answers you have been given are incorrect.

The newer 8300 SARA software (I have 1.89.17.1 on mine - date code 12/20/06) enables the aux port on the front. You can use the 640x480 output on the HR20 - and record it to the AUX in on the SA8300HD.

That will move your material over - although it will only have 480 lines of resolution.

Now, some will say that isn't HD, but you did not specify it had to be in HD either....and we don't even know if the stuff you are moving is in HD (BTW, D* uses 480x480 for SD-LITE).

You just asked how to move it over.

But if you must move it over in HD, then the answers above are correct.

..........enables the aux port on the front. You can use the 640x480 output on the HR20 - and record it to the AUX in on the SA8300HD.And exactly how would you do that? I don't know of any way to select the front inputs for recording, only pass-through. The latest User's Guide (page 2) specifically states "Note: The on-screen content of the external device cannot be copied to your DVR hard drive."

I was just given the the update in the last few days prior to it being pushed out to the market to look for bugs (notice the date code - which is why I specifically noted the SARA version in the post).

I was told by the head tech at the cable company that this was part of the update - but it was of no interest in it and have not tested it or explored it further. I am dealing with the items I am interested in to see what problems exist there.

FWIW, the front inputs were activated back in 1.88 (though some cableco's skipped that release), but could not be recorded from then either. I tested to make sure they worked, but someone else tried to record and couldn't, there's no recording option to select those inputs. I've had 1.89 for a month now, but haven't retested the front inputs. However, everything else in 1.89 follows the latest User's Guide available on SA's website and that still says they cannot be recorded from. AFAIK, the only mention of the front inputs in the 1.88 (and 1.89) release notes is that they are now active, not that they can be recorded from.

If I was lied to by a someone at a cable company, it wont be the first or last time - but they claimed it would work. Since they are rolling out 1.88 for the first time this week and were on 1.87 up until this past weekend, they claimed this was one of the new features. If its not, it's not.

I don't know that you were "lied to" unless they specifically said the front AUX inputs could be recorded, and even that may have just been a misunderstanding on their part. AFAIK, all the Release Notes said is that the inputs were now active, so they may have simply thought that meant stuff could be recorded too.

I got the Release Notes for 1.89 yesterday and there is nothing new in them about the front inputs.

I just don't want will667 making a decision based on incorrect info. Of course, if he's thinking of switching to cable, he could get an 8300 to see for himself if he can record from the HR20 before he deactivates it, but my guess is he'll only be able to view what he has on the HR20, not transfer it.

Nope, he specifically said that the port was now active and that you should also be able to record to it - he just hadn't figured out how yet as he only had the new SARA software loaded for less than an hour that day as well.

I agree 100% and if the info is incorrect I appreciate you correcting it - especially so I bust the cable engineer's buns.

He probably figures that since you can record from the front inputs on a VCR, you should be able to on the 8300 also, but such is not the case.

BTW. If he should somehow figure out a way to do it, please let us know. I just switched to Aux and as soon as I pressed Record, I got a notice saying "Recording feature not available for auxillary input".

Not to resurrect and old thread, but how do I get my Time Warner Cable Explorer 8300HD front AV inputs to work? I'd love to use these to occasionally hook up an old video game system, without having to pull my entertainment center out from the wall and feed cables through the back.

Charles.
