Hey guys, I'm in need of some serious help. I own a Sony KD34-XBR970 and was going through the service menu and changing some of the display settings for VPOS, VSIZ, HPOS, & HSIZ and all of a sudden my screen went to a huge full screen grid. It shows HD FULL at the top and I can't see any picture no matter what I do. I can't even chance any of the inputs like to video1, video2, video3.. etc. I have tried turning the tv on and off multiple times and turning the power off for extended periods and still the same problem. The thing is when I first turn it on, it displays properly for like 5 seconds and then goes back to the full screen grid with HD FULL. Any recommendations or am I screwed? I really don't want to have to go through Sony to get this fixed if I don't have to. Any help would be greately appreciated!! Thank you.

You are screwed. You probably messed with the intervals that sets the TV output
into normal. Plus, your warranty is void when you screw with service menu. You
should learn how to do it first before you do anything. All I can say is send it back
to the retailer and say it's defective or fool Sony thinking the tube just went out.

If your not feeling comfortable venturing in the service menu's then it's best to leave it to the professionals.

I give service menu help all the time with sony tv's but i am not responsible for any problem that some people may bring upon themselves when doing something wrong in the Service Menu.

In other words next time don't mess with the Service Menu unless you know absolutely sure what you are doing because you can really **** up your tv if you don't know what certain items are.

I knew what I was doing. I learned everything I knew from Justc. I knew what buttons to press and I didnt hit any wrong buttons. I'm no fool; it just happened!

Sorry to hear that, BTW Justsc was once my apprentice when it came to Sony Service codes knowledge but now is a master like myself :)

Looks like a call to a service tech guy is in order.

So, from what I gather here, this wont be covered in my warranty from Sony? Will they know automatically that this is in fact a Service Menu problem. They don't have to know what I dont tell them.

Have you tried to get back into the service menu?

The service menu shows up when I bring it up but I dont know what to do once I get back into it.

Sounds like one of the built-in test patterns. It's easy to get it back to normal.

First find the service menu heading "QM" - it's one of the last menus, and the text is blue instead of the normal green.

Within QM find parameter #1 PATN. This is the built-in test pattern generator. Change PATN to 0 to turn off the "full screen grid" and it will be back to normal. Then be sure to "save" this setting (mute - enter)

There's some sort of bug or something where the built-in test patterns sometimes come on when you're messing around in the service menu. I don't know why. Luckily they're easy to turn back off.

G-Bull, thank you so much!! I am at work right now but I will definitely give that a shot when I get off work. I'll let you know if it works or not. :)

I'm glad it solved your problem. Don't be hard on the other folks, I'm sure they just didn't know what the problem was that you were describing.
