View Full Version : RS1 makes AX2 internal processor redundant?
Trying to decide on the best DVD player for the RS1...the Toshiba AX2 is receiving rave reviews for its high quality internal processor, which is particularly good for upconverting standard definition DVDs. But the RS1 also has a high quality internal processor...so is the step up in price for the AX2 worth it over the lower end models given that the RS1 already has a terrific processor?
Craigslue 02-17-07, 03:16 PM AX2 uses the SO Reon chip. Best of both worlds, use the one you think looks better. I imagine one is better than the other at certain things. So depending on what your watching choose your weapon! :confused:
Julian Lalor 02-17-07, 04:28 PM The XA2 would be redundant for the Mistusbishi HC5000, as it has exactly the same processor. Not sure about the JVC, though, as it's a different beast altogether.

With the XA2, you'll (eventually) get 1080p/24. This and the 5.1 audio outputs become the only differences you care about vs. the A2. Are they worth $500 for.....?
Cam Man 02-17-07, 05:14 PM That's really a good question that we are all going to be evaluating soon. The conventional wisdom would be to always go with/start with a good source. We may find that the Gennum deinterlaces so well that it might be difficult to choose a winner. It also might be tough to pick a winner if you have a VP in the chain.
There is no "AX2". The player model is HD-XA2.
VirusKiller 02-19-07, 10:10 AM I have just discovered that the HD1/RS1 overscans 480i and 480p inputs over HDMI by a full 2.5%. Best to scale in the player or an outboard video processor IMO.

Wow... how did you make this discovery? Did you use a specific test pattern, or signal generator?
Cam Man 02-19-07, 10:30 AM I also just learned that if sent a 1080p source/signal, the Gennum passes it in native form with no scaling. That's good news.

Good news indeed. I have a XA2 on order to pair with my RS1. Certainly I'll be posting plenty of impressions.
So, I guess that answer's the question, right? Now, just hoping the XA2 keeps coming down in price...
I got a RS1/AX2 question for anyone who knows the answer. Assuming the AX2 gets a firmware update for 1080p/24 (latest is July now :( ) can the 1080p/24 mode be used for SD-DVD upconversion as well, and would this be the prefered setting for SD-DVD?

I can also confirm no overscan with 720p or 1080i inputs. Haven't tried 1080p yet, but I'd be astounded if there was overscan.

Yeah, it would be nice :) I would love to know if this can be applied to SD-DVD as well, and if this would be the prefered setting for SD as well as HD.
VirusKiller 02-20-07, 10:08 AM Actually, what I'm hoping for is that for the European XE1 (equivalent of your XA2, but plays PAL DVDs too):
1) It will get a 1080p24 firmware upgrade.
2) The known-to-exist-in-Toshiba-towers multi-region DVD hack will be leaked.
3) The upscaling will perform 480i60 --> 1080p24.
Not asking much am I?!!!! :D
