View Full Version : Extremely poor signal with Terk HDTVi and my LCD tv...

I just received my Terk HDTVi in the mail today. Plugged it into my Sony 46 V2500 LCD tv (with HDTV tuner). I tried picking up local channels but they are all "fuzzy" with a lot of grain and noise. I live in a 2 story brick house and basically my whole neighborhood has the same type of house design. TV is on the first floor. Probably becase i live in NYC and the brick houses are interrupting the signal? My V2500 saids "No Signal" when i switch to analog channels. No matter how i position the antenna, regular VHF channels are noisy and i can't even detect UHF signals. Can i get some input on this?

Zip code is 11204 and i'm around 9.3 miles from the Empire state building.

If the pictures are fuzzy with noise, you are not looking at the digital channels. With digital, you get a clean picture, no picture, or a lot of blocky dropouts. Did you aim the antenna in the direction of the Empire State Building and perform a full/auto digital scan? To get the digital stations, you have to first perform a scan for the TV to build a channel map. Place the antenna in a window facing north if you can.

I pointed the antenna towards the empire state building before. I ran diagnossis and found no signal. But i aimed the antenna towards the front window of the house (which is almost the opposite side of the direction i SHOULD be facing the antenna) and i got 41 signal strength out of 100. Most if not all UHF channels work now but the VHF is still the same.

All the digital stations in NYC are broadcasting on UHF. Are the VHF stations you are talking about the analog or the digital channels with x.1, x.2 numbers? For the VHF analog stations, you need to extend the rabbit ear antenna as that is the VHF antenna.
Your house sounds as if it is blocking the signal, so you are picking up a reflected signal by aiming it out the window. But I'm still not clear from your posts on whether you did a digital auto/full scan; did you?

I did a digital auto scan and it picked up 19 channels (with the antenna aimed at the window). those are the channels with x.1 , x.2 numbers. I tried extending the rabbit ears with the UHF element aimed at the window but the picture is still very noisy.

Rabbit ears are for analog. Is this antenna amplified? Sometimes people have to try different ones to find one that works for them. Radio Shack has one that looks like a space ship that will rotate the internal antenna. This one seems to work for some.

I get zero HD channels only ~9 blocks from the Empire State building (using a year-2000 RPTV with a built-in HD tuner), although years ago I did tune stations from the World Trade center and the ESB. Tuning to a specific HD UHF channel number might help (see antennaweb.org), then moving an antenna to maximize the signal. If NYC's severe multipath reflections is the problem, one of the newer 5th/6th-generation-chip tuners (see Samsung thread here) might overcome it. I've settled on getting HD from TWC, with satisfactory results (almost zero blocking breakups), although I still gripe about not getting full HDNet test pattern effective resolution (resolvable detail)and likely the same from most other sources. That antenna brand, from posts I read, often gets knocked for HD reception, but perhaps it has improved. -- John

No, rabbit ears are for VHF channels. In NYC, all the digital stations are currently broadcasting on UHF. However, in 2009, after the analog shutdown, WABC-DT 7 and WPIX-DT CW 11 will be switching their digital broadcast from UHF to their current analog channels. Many upper VHF stations across the US will be doing the same in 2009. In Las Vegas, most of the major digital stations are on VHF. So, please, don't confuse people by posting that rabbit ears are for "analog".

SayNoToPistons, if you are receiving the digital broadcast for the station, you can ignore the analog channel. Look at what channels you are receiving and confirm that you are getting the digital channel for each. The analog ones are likely to look noisy with ghosting in a multi-path rich & crowded electrical noise source environment like NYC. That is one of the benefits of digital broadcasting along with HD.

DIGITAL BROADCASTING IS ON UHF.
WHEN THE SWITCH IS TURNED OFF ON ANALOG IN 2009 ALL VHF FREQUENCIES GO BACK TO THE FCC RE AUCTION AND ALLOCATION
YOU WILL NEED A UHF ANTENNA (A LITTLE ONE)
ALL TV WILL BE ON UHF.

the channel allocation for digital is ch2-ch51. ch 52-69 are reassigned.

see enclosed pdf . lists fcc channel allotments after the 3rd round.

That is completely false. There are many stations that are currently broadcasting digital on VHF. After the transition many of the UHF digitals will revert to their original analog VHF channel assignments. VHF isn't going anywhere.
