Anyone that has had one of these open. Does the DVD drive connect via an IDE cable? Or is it some other type of connection?

thanks

The 3390 does have an IDE DVD drive. It is almost the same drive that is in the 3455. The 3390 has an open frame drive, while the 3455 has a closed frame drive (probably because the 3455 has a fan, while the 3390 does not).

It is the same drive, the cover pieces are just absent on the 3390.

yeah.... i actually went and "rented" a DVDR3400 this morning, so i could check it out. I was hoping that all the circuit boards were the same and that one could add a HD and flash a firmware, and turn it into a DVR.

the board that the DVD drive connects to is different, and only has one ide connector, instead of the two that the 3455 board has.

Yeah, I thought of that too, some time ago. The 3390 & 3455 are alike mostly just in the DVD drive and the power supply board, and maybe the size and design of the case. All of the other boards, including the front panel board and the remote control, are very different.
