Looking at buying one of theses units. Would like to use it for time shifting,recording from minidv camcorder and converting vhs to dvd and playing dvd's. At the present time have time warner cable without cable box. Would like to get lcd hdtv set in the future. What things do i need to know or look out for.

Don't count on recording commercially made VHS videos because those would contain Macrovision anti-copy signals that most or all combo units will honor. It should work fine on VHS tapes that you recorded yourself on your home VHS recorder.
