View Full Version : my first netflix HD-dvd arrived yesterday
tundrSQ 02-18-07, 09:44 AM "Lake House" and both sides are completly beat to h@ll....is this what i should be expecting? I have not hooked up my HD-A1 yet, but from what I read about it, I will not be able to play this
BB, and CB are due tomorrow....lets hope for better.
thetman 02-18-07, 10:00 AM welcome to the HD world of Netflix. I waited 2 months to receive my first HD disc and that one was all messed up and would not play, good times for sure
thetman
I have yet to receive an unplayable disk from Blockbuster. I did receive one BR disk, but other than that I have absolutely loved my service. I have had it for 5 weeks and I am completely satisfied with it.
wittangamo 02-18-07, 10:43 AM I've received more than a dozen HD DVDs from Netflix. Only one was unplayable to to a deep scratch near the center. It was quickly replaced. Several had fingerprints or smudges that required cleaning, but they worked.
I haven't found unplayables discs to be a big problem. My only disappointment is how long it takes to get new releases. Obviously there is more demand for HD DVD rentals than there is supply from Netflix.
But I'll stick with it. And I have contacted Netflix to request titles they don't carry -- like "The World's Fastest Indian."
Blockbuster lost me for good years ago with unjustified late fees. They still don't carry HD DVD in any of the stores where I live, and I see no need to add another mail service when Netflix is treating me fairly.

Report it to Netflix, and they will replace it.
My wife and I really enjoyed "Lake House," by the way.
I've found that thumbprints cause more trouble than scratches for my A1. At least the thunbprints wash off.
abr27440 02-18-07, 10:52 AM I would reserve judgment until you give it a try. I have been exclusively getting HD DVD's for the last two months from netflix and I have yet to have any problem, even though some of them looked like ass. Remember error correction is awesome.
enchntr 02-18-07, 12:14 PM Just started Netflix myself, and have noticed the BD discs are also scratched a bit...not as much as the HD DVDs I've gotten, but the only one that had major problems (literally just froze) was Casablanca. It didn't freeze the player mind you, just froze at the same point in Chapter 6. When I looked at it, there was a pretty deep scratch.
Overall though, I've had few problems so far. Also watched Lake House last night with my wife and was pleasantly surprised that it didn't suck. Not one of those movies that I would watch over and over again (say, Speed), but was definitely glad I rented it
Blumoon 02-18-07, 01:01 PM Netflix HD DVD rentals have presented some major issues in the realms of renting.
I have been a strict netflix user for quite some time - so I dunno how it is renting from storefronts.
First - the scratched HD DVD rentals would be a NON issue if they replaced the ones reported as skipping. They usually dont from my experience. This isnt a strict HD DVD issue either. Obscure SD DVD's have come scracthed, skipped, and when reported, I recieved the EXACT same copy as returned. (Cannibal Holocaust)
The problem isnt the format (although I must add, BD's have been fine and have shown at most very minor scratches from netflix, maybe one minor advantage in the aspect of rentals)
The problem is that some users have EXTREME ideas of how to use these disks.
The problem lies with netflix - wouldnt be an issue if they replaced the damn disks. I know its expensive, but really. If they only have a few HD or BD's to rotate for any given title, expect heavey wear as people come to adopt the HD formats. Frankly, coating or not, the business model they run should have expected wear and tear on these things. Coating or not, if you have 2 - 3 copies of Open Season to service your south east region, it WILL become unplayable.
Netflix needs to be more responsible in this area.
And my $50 monthly membership shouldnt leave me questioning these things. But for a busy student/father, the convenience is incredible.

Yes, that is exactly what you should expect. I've been a member of Blockbuster Online for 2 months and have received 4 HD DVDs. All 4 looked like a car had driven over them. 2 were completely unplayable and the other 2 had a number of skips and pauses throughout the movie (I rarely have that problem with disc that I buy). BBO did replace the unplayable ones but, they had just as many scratches and even one of the replacements wouldn't play beyond a certain point. The only thing that is keeping me around with BBO is all the free in store rentals you get. I'm doing the $5.99/month plan were you get 2 online rentals a month plus 3 free in store rentals per month. But if I continue to receive bad HD DVDs then even that cheap $5.99 will not be worth it.
i've gotten about 8-10 HD DVDs from netflix since mid january and haven't had a problem with a single one (xbox 360 addon player).
granted, recently i haven't been able to get any of the ones i want due to short/long waits.
filmfreak 02-18-07, 01:55 PM I recently got Spy Game on HD DVD and it was scratched to hell and back! I thought to myself, there is no way this is going to play! It played great up until the ending, the damn HD DVD froze right at the climatic point of film, and I was pissed to say the least.
Because it’s so hard to get HD DVDs from Netflix and often when they arrive, they’re unplayable, I’ve started putting the SD DVD in my queue (UNFORTUNATELY) and if I enjoy the film, I just buy it on HD DVD.
I have been renting HD DVDs from Netflix since they began offering the disks (April or May 2006) and have not yet had any unplayable disks. Some of the disk looked terrible and there have been one or two with a momentary "studder", but the XA1 recovered and continued playback just fine.
You might want to try playing the disk before 'deciding' it is unplayable based on appearance ;). Also, as others have mentioned, washing/cleaning a disk with problems may help.

filmfreak 02-18-07, 02:14 PM I did watch the disc, and as I stated above, the movie froze on me at the end. I also clean disc that are smudged or whatnot as well.

Who wouldnt try playing them? And in my mind, stuttering is unacceptable not matter how minor or infrequent.
Netflix needs to step up to plate on this one and replace worn disks.
luigionlsd 02-18-07, 02:19 PM I've been on Netflix since December, and all HD DVDs (or SD for that matter) have been playable. Granted, I have the 360 addon, but some of the discs (mainly combos) have looked pretty questionable of whether they'll play or not. I guess the loudness of the drive itself is the price we pay for a stronger laser

Clean off the disk, hook up your A1 and then try it out. You might be surprised. I played dozens of beat up disks without issue.
mypepper 02-18-07, 09:18 PM I am afraid to say, this is the norm for most HD DVD's from Netflix. I swear, Netflix must have frisbee practice before they ship out the disks. I don't think the average renter of HD DVD's, mishandles the disks while in there possession. I for one, handle the disks with extreme caution, even if they are scratched.

Weebedna 02-19-07, 12:23 PM Just about all my hd-dvd's from Netflix have been scratched. I've been a member since 1999 and the majority of sd-dvd's have been scratch free. In my experience, I can confirm that they do not take the hd-dvds reported as scratched out of circulation. I gave up on hd-dvd rentals. I just buy them and rent sd-dvd's....
Malcolm_B 02-19-07, 12:26 PM Yep. easily half of my Blockbuster HD rentals are scratched like a cat's been having a good ol time with them! I've only seen them this bad in-store when I rented DVDs for my 4 year old daughter! Who the hell are these HD DVD renters who do this?!
filmfreak 02-19-07, 01:20 PM Well....it looks like I'm getting Babel from Netflix, so I'll be the first to view!

DITTO ITS RIDICULOUS! I cancelled my online BB subscription for probably a long time. I will not do it again until they carry HD DVD in the BB stores for easy return.

If must be a plot by Sony to undermine the HD-DVD format! I bet they have a room full of cats just for this purpose! :D

Hahahahaha...
A Sony squad of cats bred to DESTROY HD DVDs on sight! :D
KellyBrewer 02-19-07, 03:10 PM Just my 2 cents. I've received 5 HD-DVDs from Netflix and all of them have played just fine on the HD-XA2.
Blumoon 02-19-07, 03:18 PM Yeah but unfortuantely that isnt the case in my and others experiences.
I love netflix, but I have had a couple HD DVD's and SD DVD's skip, lock up all together, and some even cracked.
While I understand this will happen with rentals, they shouldnt send the same titles back reported as unplayable.
So far, all of my HD DVDs from Netlix have played fine. Some of them looked iffy when I first opened them, but after quick bath in soap and water, they've always cleaned up very nicely. Once I've watched them, however, I do let my cats play with them before I send them back. It's so cute. They especially love the combo discs.
My copy of the lake house from netflix was fine.
in the roughly 25 movies I rented from them I had 2 problems.
King Kong arrived cracked in half
Superman Returns was badly scratched and halfway through the movie stopped playing.
I've been a netflix customer for two weeks, getting only Blu-ray discs. So far, all twelve I've been sent have looked absolutely pristine. Is it the coating? Am I getting brand new discs?
alfbinet 02-19-07, 10:26 PM As an HD DVD customer...I have been getting Netflix since August. I have never had a problem. I always check for a dirty disc. And they are always dirty. I swipe the disc and have never had a problem.
cyberpunk2436 02-19-07, 11:01 PM A lot of the time the discs looked scratched and dirty because they use commercial buffers to clean them so they leave those swirl marks. Despite their good intentions, a lot of the times they will leave the disc unplayable on some players. I have received a cracked one right down the middle before but other than that I haven't had a problem with Netflix. Much cheaper and more convenient than going out and renting a movie from the movie store for how many movies I watch.
Bryan Lyle 02-20-07, 06:38 AM I have always wanted to know what the heck Netflix customers do to their discs while they have them. Just about everyone I get looks like they let their kids throw them around the house.
So far I have been lucky and only 1 title has refused to play for me. I am just now starting to rent HD titles, so hopefully my luck will continue.
karlw2000 02-20-07, 08:33 AM Well....it looks like I'm getting Babel from Netflix, so I'll be the first to view!I got "Babel" also, but with the holiday, it won't arrive till Wednesday after some people bought it. If I see a sale, I will buy it just like I bought "The Departed" last week despite also getting it from Netflix.
BTW I've only had 1 unplayable HD-DVD in the nearly 3 months that I've had the Xbox360 HD add-on, and I get Netflix and Blockbuster.
csmith75 02-20-07, 08:33 AM I have been renting HD DVD and Blu-ray titles from Netflix and have never received a disc that wouldn't play or was scratched horribly....knock on wood.

Well thats for two reasons... The discs havent been out as long as HD DVD's, and yes, the coating helps.
But I dont care what you add to a disk, IT WILL EVENTUALLY BECOME WORN AND UNUSABLE - So while you havent experienced this problem on blu ray yet, you will given enough circulation.
The heart of the problem still remains - Netflix does not inspect the disks when reported as unplayable, and still circulates many of em.
The cracked in half thing, two SD DVD's came like this. I can only assume a careless mail carrier did that.
I've been a NetFlix customer for several years and have rented hundreds of DVD's including recently HD-DVD's. I can only recall one or two occasions where I received a disk scratched enough to impact the quality of play.

Yes, this is what you should expect, if you get a movie well after it release date it will be beat to a pulp. With DVD, most still play. I was amazed I got a copy of Hulk and it was Beat to crap but my Xbox Add on Still played it amazingly enough.
Da Rafsta 02-21-07, 11:11 AM I've gotten about a dozen or so HD-DVDs via Blockbuster online and haven't had any issues with them not playing with ease.
Arthur Hancock 02-21-07, 11:46 AM I'm a Mystery Science Theater 3000 fan and "Gunslinger" just took the record for disc absuse. The disc looks like it was erroneously delivered to the Bronx Zoo ape house. Literally every inch of the sweet side was covered with thousands of scratches--you could easily duplicate the effect by scrubbing a DVD on a concrete block. To top it off there was a one inch crack starting at the hole. My 3910 didn't play the thing of course.
It seems Netflix should be able to red flag the last renter of an abused disc like this (the one who had it before me--the damaged disc reporter) and keep an eye on them in the future. One thing is for sure, Netflix's inspection system sucks. This thing should NEVER have been mailed to me.
HorrorScope 02-21-07, 12:29 PM This is hard for me to say but I haven't had any problems with Netflix in the Sacramento area (I think we should start listing areas as well since it matters). You ask why I have a hard time saying this? Because I rather you leave to allow more titles available "Now" for me. Go to BB online, they are the best! lol
I have been getting Netflix SD DVDs for about 9 months and started to get HD DVD after Christmas. I have received 2 SD DVDs that were cracked across one half of the radius. Those were the only unplayable SD DVDs. I have received only one HD DVD that gave me problems. It was Spy Game. My player said that it was not an HD or SD DVD when it tried to load it. I cleaned it and then it recognized it. It played the first 3 chapters and then locked up the player. I took it out, put it back in and then went to chapter 4 and rewound until I was just a few seconds after where it locked up and was able to watch the rest of the movie without any problems.
By the way, I highly recommend NOT trying to play SD or HD DVDs that are cracked. I've seen a few CDROM discs "explode" into millions of pieces inside their drives over the years in IT support and they were all attributed to someone trying to use a cracked CD. It's not going to happen every time but if it happens in your HD player, it will suck.
